WISH Away The Pounds~ Marvelous May 2014 Challenge! *All Welcome!*

Since things are a tad quiet around here I will do a little different QOTD. ;)

QOTD Tuesday May 20, 2014: You are a tumbleweed on Twitter. Share something fun, insightful or just random with your followers -- remember it has to be 140 characters or less.

Yep, this is a totally frivolous question that has nothing to do with our topic. :rotfl:

Here is my own answer:

Ha! That car thought it was going to miss me but I nailed the windshield and I'm hanging on til Walla Walla!

BBL with replies. :goodvibes

"I wonder how many Activity Points I get for all of this tumbling??"

:lmao: .............................P

Well, I've been keeping an eye on my Breeze app every day and, counting today, I have met my daily step goal for 14 days in a row. :yay: Both Sundays during that time, however, I've had to do about 15 minutes of laps around my back yard in the dark because, apparently, Sunday is my lazy day. But, hey, now I am aware of it so that's something. :sad2:

And, I have another app that has been on my phone for... months... at least. I used it once on January first of this year and I was sore for a week because, I really am THAT out of shape. But, I broke it out again today.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/7-minute-workout-high-intensity/id675459297?mt=8

It's a 7-minute workout app from lolo - the makers of the Jeff Galloway running apps and several other workout apps that take your music play list and alter the beat of your music to the pace of your workout. (I can post links of the other apps if you're interested or you can just search "lolo" on the app store.) I have used many of the apps over the past few years and have been pretty happy with them. My only issue being that I got bored of music and have started listening to podcasts or Audible books while walking or running and those don't really work all that well with the apps.

As far as this app, itself, I think it's a simple way to put a bit of circuit training into a busy schedule. There is a beginner, intermediate and advanced level. In the settings you can tell the app what kind of equipment, if any, that you have access to and it will tailor your regimen to fit your setup. Each 7 minute session runs thru a dynamic set of 14 exercises that you do for 30 seconds each. The music helps keep your rhythm up and the audio cues keep you moving from one exercise to another. There is video of every exercise to help you learn ones that are new to you and be reminded of proper form for the ones you're already familiar with.

So that's my product review for today, I guess. I'm going to keep using the 7-Minute app for the rest of our May challenge and see how it goes. If you give it a try, let me know what you think too! :thumbsup2

I think I'm gonna bust out the old RunKeeper this weekend too. I "ran" today on the treadmill. And by "ran", I mean that there were a few little 30-second jogs thrown into my walk and those were my first jogs since last summer. Gotta start somewhere, ya know! :upsidedow

Congratulations on your step record, Connie! You are definitely on a roll with your healthy lifestyle now. :goodvibes How did you feel after your run? If I recall correctly you had a stress fracture last year didn't you?

Hey. Just popping in. Haven't been on much--since my stepdad's stroke my husband had a cyst suddenly get huge-- had it lanced several times, then he had to have emergency surgery Friday to clear it all out because there was some really bad bacteria in there. Now he's home (mostly because he just didn't want to be at the hospital) and I have to pack the wound which is HUGE. My stepdad's in the hospital for another week, been trying to visit but between the both (of course they were in 2 different hospitals) am a bit strapped out. I did weigh in Friday am and was back down 2 pounds so I'm happy to be maintaining. Hope everyone's having some good weather finally kick in.

Wow, Susan, so sorry to hear about everyone's trouble. pixiedust: for speedy healing for all! And don't forget to take care of yourself while you are taking care of everyone else. :flower3:

"I wonder how many Activity Points I get for all of this tumbling??"

:lmao: .............................P

:rotfl: See I knew you would get into it!

I don't tweet either but I decided we needed a break from our more serious topics.

Safe travels to you and your DD -- have a great time! :goodvibes

Off to shower and dress for work! Tonight we talk about ANCHORS (and not exactly the kind that keep boats from drifting!). What's YOUR anchor in this weight-loss journey? (ETA: ooops... anchors is NEXT WEEK! That is what I get for reading ahead!)

I was wondering about that because I thought this week's topic is spring cleaning your fridge. I will look forward to anchors next week. :sail:

QOTD Tuesday May 20, 2014: You are a tumbleweed on Twitter. Share something fun, insightful or just random with your followers -- remember it has to be 140 characters or less.

I've never tweeted. And now, to do so as a tumbleweed?! :scratchin Sorry. I got nothin'.

WOWZA! I hope you realize how LUCKY you are!! And I hope you take advantage of all of this!

Oh, yes, I know how very blessed we are here. The gym and the clinic are fairly new additions to our company over the past 2 or 3 years now. I have taken advantage of both. I got out of the gym habit for several months but I seem to be getting back in the habit since last week. :thumbsup2

That all sounds GREAT!! I need some new incentives to keep me moving. My "mile-a-day" in May has not been super successful. I haven't missed a lot of days, but somehow only needing to do a mile has meant that I ONLY do a mile many days! Mental mind games, at work!

I did the 7-minute workout yesterday and, because I am wildly out of shape, I am really feeling it today. :scared:

And... aren't we all just a little "mental" anyway...? :joker:

Wowza.... things certainly are quiet here!

I check in from time to time but I don't post. I wouldn't want to look like I was just talking to myself. :lmao:

Congratulations on your step record, Connie! You are definitely on a roll with your healthy lifestyle now. :goodvibes How did you feel after your run? If I recall correctly you had a stress fracture last year didn't you?

Good memory! You recall correctly but... that actually happened in the fall of 2010! (I haven't been here on the WISH boards since around the fall of 2011... I'm an epic slacker.)

It took almost a year for me to feel like I was really completely recovered from that. In 2012 I got back up to running two or three 5Ks and a 10K. I haven't done any racing since then. Too much life going on. But, I may peruse Runner's World Race Finder this afternoon and see if I can put a 5K on my calendar. Maybe. Based on how out of shape I am, it'd probably have to be 3 months out which would be right in the middle of August. Ugh. I'm gonna start sweating just thinking about an August run. Yuck. :scared:

I do really enjoy running though. I'm starting out really, really easy to be extra sure I don't hurt myself. I'm heavier now and certainly NOT any younger than I was the last time I did this. So, to begin from the beginning, I did 30 minutes on the treadmill today using a 15-sec run/45-sec walk interval. Baby steps. ::yes::

Howdy folks!

QOTD Wednesday, May 21, 2014: It's Woo Hoo Wednesday! Give yourself a big "woo hoo" for helping yourself to be healthy and share something that you did this week to help you with your goals. Hopefully you don't feel like you've been on the wildest ride in the wilderness!;)

You are doing so well with your healthy lifestyle, Connie! I know that you will get back to where you want to be. It is tough to recover from injuries. You are smart to take it easy! :cool2:

Short intervals are great! Jeff Galloway BQ'd using a 30 second/30 second interval. Thanks to RunKeeper you can program pretty much an endless variety of short intervals.

Maybe you can find a race for late September or early October when the weather will be a little cooler in your neck of the woods.

Howdy folks!

I'm excited that I'm finally just making progress. I have been steady gaining weight for months and I just couldn't find my "want to". I think I finally found it and... progress feels good! :cool1:

--------------------------------------------------------------
Has anyone heard from Dona? I haven't seen any weigh-in results posted or even a "hello" from her in a while... ??

So glad you have your moji back, Connie! :cool2: It's a great feeling, isn't it?

I'm sure we will hear from Dona when she is able to get to us. She's had a lot on her plate with her dad passing away, taking care of her mom, and her students probably have AP exams soon, too. There's nothing like hostessing to make your life go crazy! :flower3:

I know Magdalene our hostess for June is currently cruising but she will be ready to go for June. :cool2:

I knew she had lots going on right now but I was just wondering if anyone had been in touch with her and if she's doing okay.

I guess it's just you and me today, Lisa. I know that the Spring BL used to be pretty dang hard to keep up with but, it's just so quiet in here this month that I kinda miss it, ya know? Is it usually like this since the re-format or is May just uber busy for everyone? :confused3

Were you able to resist the siren call of the popcorn? I have just finally started making some progress in that direction. Wonder if our local cheap theater has The Lego Movie yet? DS would like to see it.

I did!! I ate a couple Twizzlers instead, though. It was a cute movie. DSs liked it and it was okay from my stand point :)

QOTD Monday, May 19, 2014: Do you feel like you have a good foundation for your healthy lifestyle success? Is there an a part of your foundation that needs a little shoring up? Or does your strong foundation have something not listed?

BBL with replies and my own answer -- I have training this morning for my cloud based storage at the office. :cool2:

6. Set up your environment for success.
It’s time to start thinking about what needs to be in place so that once you jump into action, the landmines have been removed. Are your fridge and cabinets filled with junk food and unhealthy choices? Give it away or throw it out! Stock your shelves with lots of healthy choices so that when hunger strikes or it’s time to prepare meals, you’ve got what you need on hand. Same goes for your office. Clear out the candy and chips from your desk drawers. Keep good choices on hand. If you don’t have access to a fridge, you might want to purchase a small one or at least get a cooler to keep the right types of snacks available. If you’re thinking of joining a gym, make sure it’s convenient to your home or office. Ask for a trial membership and make sure you feel comfortable with the atmosphere.

I feel like I have a good foundation, but this is a struggle for me. I grocery shop and try to buy healthy food and snacks, but the boys in my house (DH and DSs) want junk food, too. They honestly don't eat too much, but when I do buy something we rarely have, we devour it! DS11 begged me to buy Nutty Bars. I bought a box and I think they were gone in 2 days! I'll admit that I ate 1 bar instead of an apple or hummus and carrots. I would love to purge everything and buy 100% fresh and clean, but I don't know how it would go over in my house.

Toto, I think we are in Kansas!

Almost to the end of the school year. Just keep rolling.

Thanks for a fun question :)

Pamela~have a great trip with DD!

Hi everyone :) I missed a few days. Sunday I spend a ton of time cleaning and organizing the house and getting ready for our week. Monday I worked, had a meeting after school, walked with my sister, came home and DS11 had soccer practice. And, yesterday we went to Sam's Club then DSs had swimming. Today we have nothing and it is so nice!

I have been doing so much walking but not really any other exercises. I need to add in some strength and maybe yoga. I think that will help me actually drop some pounds. Oh, and eating better...like always.

It's pretty slow around here but at least we are still moving forward! I don't know what I'd do without these threads to check in with and get and give support.

I hope everyone has a great day :)

Jill

ETA: QOTD~my woo hoo is that even though I did not feel like it at all, and wanted to quit half way through, I walked my planned 4 miles with my sister today. Some days you're just not feeling it, but it has to be done :)

I guess it's just you and me today, Lisa. I know that the Spring BL used to be pretty dang hard to keep up with but, it's just so quiet in here this month that I kinda miss it, ya know? Is it usually like this since the re-format or is May just uber busy for everyone? :confused3

LOL! :confused3 It is quiet but I think it will pick up a bit as people get ready to gear up for the June challenge. Historically summer challenges are slower even in the old BL days. The new format has worked really well. I've noticed even the other threads on WISH are a little slow right now so it isn't just this one.

6. Set up your environment for success. It’s time to start thinking about what needs to be in place so that once you jump into action, the landmines have been removed. I have this same problem at my house, too, Jill. People who want to eat other food! ::yes:: Some people might say that we shouldn't buy anything that is not healthy for anyone but I don't want to have to be the food police for everyone and besides if they can self-regulate and maintain health with more treats than I who am I to say otherwise? :hippie: So I have to make a bit more effort to resist but most of the time I can manage.

You have awesome will power resisting movie popcorn! :thumbsup2

BRB with the QOTD.

A friendly reminder that tomorrow is weigh in day. :goodvibes

This is my last day of coaching and I'm not sure if we have any more coaches lined up so don't be afraid to pop on and say hello and post a QOTD of your own if you would like if we don't have a formal coach. :cool2:

In honor of the approaching weigh in day let's talk about the scale with a little help from our friends at sparkpeople.com, of course. ;)

55 Things the Scale Doesn't Tell You

Picture this: It's time for your weekly weigh-in, and you are confident that you've lost a pound or two. You've eaten very well this week and have been even more consistent with your exercise than you usually are. You take a deep breath, close your eyes and step on the scale, your heart skipping a beat. You brace yourself, open your eyes, and… your heart sinks into your stomach and you clench your fists. Your weight is up one pound since last week.

What's going through your mind? Is it a frenzy of horribly negative self-talk? Do you feel like a worthless failure who can't do anything right? Do you swear and stamp your footand move the scale to another spot on the bathroom floor in the hopes that the number will change?

If you've had any (or all) of these reactions after a disappointing weigh-in, you're not alone. But think about how crazy that roller coaster is! Why should a number on a scale make you feel so nervous—and then so painfully defeated when it isn't what you had hoped for? Why should a number on a scale ruin your day and make you say horrible things to yourself that you would never dream of saying to a friend?

We've all been sucked into the scale's siren song from time to time—and it makes sense why. The scale is appealing because it shows an instant, tangible metric of how you're progressing, and it seems like an easy way to tell if your weight-loss plan is working. But it's also easy to get too attached to that number—and you might start to define yourself based on what your morning weigh-in says, despite your best intentions. What's worse is, that number you're so fixated on might not even be an accurate gauge of your true progress! Your body is a complex machine; depending on fluid shifts, hormonal changes, when you last ate, how much sodium you've ingested, and multiple other factors, your weight could fluctuate by several pounds in just a single day.

So, the next time the number on the scale gets you down, step off, take a deep breath, and remember this: The only thing the scale can tell you is the amount of force that gravity has on your body at any given moment.

What can't the scale tell you? A whole lot:

1. What a good spouse/son/daughter/mother/father/grandma/grandpa you are
2. How amazing you are at your job
3. How fast you can run
4. How much passion you have for your hobbies
5. How unique your laugh is
6. How loyal you are
7. How much better your clothes are fitting
8. How much water you drink every day
9. How much you rock your favorite outfit
10. How much you've grown emotionally
11. How great your hair looks
12. How smart you are
13. How much your blood pressure/cholesterol/blood glucose numbers have improved
14. The status of your relationship with food
15. How motivated you are
16. How many flights of stairs you can climb
17. How well you're raising your kids
18. How many lifelong memories you made on your last vacation
19. How thoughtful you are
20. What a great smile you have
21. How much easier it is to carry your groceries since you've started working out
22. How good you are at making healthy food choices
23. How close you are to your friends
24. How loved you are
25. How well you can cook
26. What a genuine person you are
27. How much muscle mass you've put on in relation to fat lost
28. The number of good books you've read
29. How many amazing places you've seen
30. How many volunteer hours you've logged
31. How endearing your quirks are
32. The number of steps you take per day
33. How ambitious you are
34. How many times you've passed up a treat for a healthier option
35. How promising your future is
36. How appreciated you are
37. How far you can walk
38. The number of fruits and veggies you eat every day
39. How you handle stress
40. How funny you are
41. How many inches you've lost
42. How much knowledge you've gained about healthy living
43. How compassionate you are
44. What a good pet owner you are
45. How confident you are
46. The number of compliments you've received
47. How happy you are
48. The number of medications you've been able to stop taking since getting healthier
49. How strong your relationships are
50. How much weight you can lift
51. The number of people who admire and look up to you
52. How many challenges you've overcome in your life
53. How talented you are
54. How much you've touched the lives of others
55. How much you're learning and growing every day

Turns out the scale doesn't know so much, does it? The next time you weigh in, take the number with a grain of salt. Never let the number on the scale become the only measure of your worth; make healthy choices, be consistent and trust the process.

BBL with my own answer.

QOTD Thursday, May 22, 2014: So what is your scale not telling you?

The scale doesn't tell me that every healthy decision I make *is* success.

I was in an all day training class at work today. As soon as that concluded I hit the treadmill because I was so tired of sitting in that chair. It was a good class but, boy, it was a long time to sit.

Y'all have a good night.

You are having a very successful month for sure, Connie! :thumbsup2 Those sitting trainings are the pits -- I try to sit in the back so I can stand up part of the time. I'm at the age where people believe me if I tell them I have to stand for my back. ;)

QOTD Thursday, May 22, 2014: So what is your scale not telling you? It can be something from the list or something else.

I really, really try to believe that the scale is just a number and not who am I but I have to confess when I get a number that I don't like it makes me  and :headache: and  -- like yesterday when I had worked so hard all week and was down .4. :sad2: But we have a saying in our WW meeting. "Did you have a bad week? You have 30 minutes to get over it!" So I did get over it and lost another pound today. :cool2:

Does anyone have any fun plans for the long week-end?

I have a 5k on Sunday and we are spending the rest of the time hanging out at home and working in the yard. All the entrees are being cooked on the grill and my eating plan is portion control and staying within my points. :cool2:

Don't forget to PM those weigh ins to donac.

Happy Friday!!!

First week of this challenge... gained 1.2. :headache:
Second week of this challenge... back to even for the month. :upsidedow
Third week of this challenge... DOWN 2.6!!!!:dance3:

It feels so good to be moving in the right direction again!!! :cool1:

Oh, and Plexus came thru for me again yesterday. When I was in that training session, they brought in lunch from Jason's Deli. I selected a wrap and a big pile of fruit from the fruit tray. There was also a large platter of cookies and brownies that I just had no real interest in. It's going to take me a while to get used to NOT having a reaction to such things. It's just so unlike me.

I don't know if this is QOTD worthy but I do have a question for everyone...

If you listen to music while you workout or run or walk or whatever, do you listen to songs that have been remixed specifically for workouts or do you just build a playlist of your favorite general releases? Either way, what are your favorite workout songs/albums?

Lots of times, I'll listen to podcasts or Audible books while I run or walk; working on the mind and the body at the same time and, depending on content, perhaps the spirit as well. But, when music is called for, my go to workout album (which I can't find on itunes any more) is very much like this one: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/50-1-workout-christian-hits!/id703888203 I think the one I have may just be a slightly older version but has mostly the same songs.

I still think that RunDisney should produce a cardio/running album. Something similar to "Four Parks One World" but remixed for serious movement. I would totally buy that album. ::yes::

Congratulations on a great loss, Connie! :cool2: And for resisting the siren's call of the goodies! :thumbsup2 I think you've found a product that really works well for you.

Thanks for reminding me I need to do a mix for my race tomorrow. :goodvibes I do mixes of my regular music. I've tried using one of the apps that helps you find music with a certain number of BPM but I haven't found one that I really like or can get to work. :rotfl:

I do have this list one of my WISH friends posted on FB that is geared to a 15mm:

Get On Your Feet - Gloria Estefan
Wake Me Up – Avicii
I Love It – Icona Pop

I also have some club mixes for Pirates of the Caribbean songs that have really good beats.

You have to be careful with some of the mixes on Itunes because the songs may not be sung by the original artist and that is annoying if you don't figure it out until it's already yours.

Enjoy the long week-end!

I hit my step goal this morning just by mowing the yard. Spent the rest of the day just hanging out with the family and doing a bit of work around the house.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and a happy Memorial Day. :-)

Wow you must have a BIG yard, Connie!

The two apps I have for figuring out BPM for music are BPM -- which you manually tap the beat and it tells you the BPM -- and Pace DJ which will analyze the beats and act like RunKeeper but I haven't actually used it for a run. It did help me put together the playlist for my race today. I hope it works! :thumbsup2

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day!
