10 Tips to Overcome Negative Thoughts: Positive Thinking Made Easy

Negative thoughts drain you of energy and keep you from being in the present moment. The more you give in to your negative thoughts, the stronger they become. I like the imagery of a small ball rolling along the ground, and as it rolls, it becomes bigger and faster.

That’s what one small negative thought can turn into: a huge, speeding ball of ugliness. On the contrary, a small positive thought can have the same effect blossoming into a beautiful outcome.

1. Meditate or do yoga.

2. Smile.

3. Surround yourself with positive people.

4. Change the tone of your thoughts from negative to positive.

5. Don’t play the victim. You create your life—take responsibility.

6. Help someone.

7. Remember that no one is perfect and let yourself move forward.

8. Sing.

9. List five things that you are grateful for right now.

10. Read positive quotes.

Do you think negative thinking impacts your weight loss or keeps you from reaching your goals? Example? Do you think any of the above tips will be useful?

Of course negative thinking impacts weight loss; it impacts everything. I've underlined the tips that I use most. DH calls my various friends "support groups!" It's truly what they are and I steer clear of negative nellies. I've really tried to teach my kids responsibility. They get so sick of hearing, "You made a mess now clean it up." I even told a principal that once. Only I said, "you shot yourself in the foot, now you've got to learn to live with the hole." That shut up the parent meeting grumblings and got us back on track! ;)

Wish I could get myself back on track. I slept in today and didn't go to the gym. Then I "treated" myself to a cinnamon roll with tea for breakfast. Where's the banging your head on the floor smilie?! Oh well. Moving on. The rest of my day will be on track with eating and I will exercise! ::yes::

Happy birthday Desiree!

Rose  Thanks for coaching, loved your thought provoking questions. Sorry about the house, but whew are you saved from a lot of work!

When a person has a reaction to something in their environment, there’s a 90 second chemical process that happens in the body; after that, any remaining emotional response is just the person choosing to stay in that emotional loop. Something happens in the external world and chemicals are flushed through your body which puts it on full alert. For those chemicals to totally flush out of the body it takes less than 90 seconds.

This means that for 90 seconds you can watch the process happening, you can feel it happening, and then you can watch it go away. After that, if you continue to feel fear, anger, and so on, you need to look at the thoughts that you’re thinking – that are re-stimulating the circuitry – that is resulting in you having this physiological response over and over again.
This was really interesting. Thanks for sharing!
I am going to go back and read that article.

If anyone is interested I am reading a book now that I think really applies to what we have been talking about this week.
It is called:
10% Happier by Dan Harris

I am not finished with it, but it talks about his journey to living in the 'now'. I borrowed it as an e-book from the library.

What I am taking away from this is that when I am binge eating I am not living in the moment--as strange as that may sound. I am too caught up in dealing with whatever is causing my anxiety which may be worry about the past, future, etc. This is my working hypothesis, at least. So I eat to relieve my stress which is brought upon by not being in the moment...does that make sense?

Anyhow this has given me lots to think about.:goodvibes

I thought we'd end my coaching gig with positive thinking.

Do you think negative thinking impacts your weight loss or keeps you from reaching your goals? Example? Do you think any of the above tips will be useful?

I do think negative thoughts impact my weight loss. I think #7 is something I need to think about more. I often compare myself to others and I need to remember that no one is perfect.

I hope everyone has liked the questions this week and even if you didn't answer, that they gave you something to think about. :goodvibes

Focusing on positive thinking, confidence, and stick-to-it-tiveness helped get me out of my head and away from the stuff that was going on here that I had little control over and helped me focus on things I can control.:goodvibes

We ended up letting the house contract go. It was a great floor plan, a great neighborhood and a great view. It needed interior updates which we were ok with. But the inspection found significant issues with the exterior that needed addressed (a lot of wood rot, leaking gutters, rusted chimney cap, basement windows that needed replaced, and an improperly installed roof that had significant nail pops). The seller wanted to give us money to fix it, but we don't want to fix it. Too much work and who knows what else we will find once we get started. The contractor we consulted with thought it was a good decision to let it go. He stressed over and over that repairs would just be band aids and basically the house needed new gutters, new fascia, a new roof, new siding, etc. The owner had literally been painting over the problems for quite a while rather than fixing them.

So we are back to square one.

I don't know if I will have a loss this week, but I did not go too crazy and I am proud of that. I went over on my calories a bit, but no chip and coke binges and that is a victory!!

My plan is to come on after work with replies, but I might just take a nap. :) I know you will understand.:goodvibes

Thanks for the great questions! So sorry about the house, but it sounds like it was going to be more of a headache that you needed! I'm sure the right house will come along. Or, you can move to Florida :)

Pamela~woo hoo on the Vitamix!

Well, I think I recovered from a long day at Niagara Falls. We had so much fun, but were very tired this morning. I also have a headache, so I skipped the run I was supposed to do yesterday that I was hoping to do this morning. Hopefully it won't effect my run on Saturday.

I caught up on some errands today and am just going to veg out the rest of the night. I'll be on in the morning to start my coaching gig. It's going to be so hard to follow Rose! I better start thinking about QOTDs tonight :rotfl2:

Good Morning and Welcome to Weigh In Day!

You know the routine by now: Send me a PM with your current weight until Monday afternoon and I will update the progress on the first page accordingly.

I also want to take the chance to thank our two first coaches for the month, Lisa and Rose! I think they did a wonderful job to get us started!

And welcome to Jill our next coach to take us through the next 5 days!

This might be a good time to point out that there are still two coaching spots available at the end of the month!

----

My weigh in this morning was nothing to be pleased about. I got rid of most of that fun surprise gain I had last Friday, but I am still up since July 1. To be honest, with a over 60 hour week at work, my eating currently is not the best. But I do keep pretty active and my fitbit generates plenty of activity points (I think it might overestimate there a bit...). I never realised that I do move around quite a bit on a normal office day. We are in an old and large building, so going to a colleagues office adds up quite a few steps and stairs.

Birthday supper went great. We ended up at Outback because Texas Roadhouse was packed. I had so many temptations and I passed on all of them which is huge for me because Outback is my FAVORITE restaurant. We usually get a full order of Aussie Fries with extra bacon and cheese. I usually eat at least 1 loaf of bread by myself with a ton of butter.

Last night, our friends ordered the bloomin onion and Aussie Fries for appetizers. I didn't eat any!!!! I only ate one small slice of the bread with no butter and shared half of that with Gabe. I ate a 8 oz. Victoria's Filet which is my favorite piece of steak but it tasted kind of funny and I was worried I would end up sick last night. I saw another woman taking her first bite of her Victoria's Filet as we were walking out and she made a funny face like it tasted funny so I'm not sure what was going on. I had salad as my sides....ok, I had two small house salads as my sides but I don't think that was too bad considering I passed on all the other stuff. Then we all went out for ice cream and I got a low fat frozen yogurt.

Weigh in's have been good to me so far this month. Lost 2.2 lbs this week for a total of 4.8 so far this month. A total of 13 lbs since June 1st.

My goal for next week is to get up a half an hour early and use the air walk machine that is just taking up space in my living room at the moment. The treadmill that is also taking up space is keeping it company. Just gotta make myself do it.

I have set small goals of 5 lbs the past two month only because I didn't want to lose motivation if I set it higher right at the beginning. However, I have made such great progress with changes in my diet and thinking that I think I will set my goal a little higher next month just to see if it can help get me to stick with my exercise plan.

51 days until Disney!!!! :cheer2: If I can keep up with this pace, I will have lost 30ish pounds by the trip. I know there will be ups and downs until then but I'm determined. My BIG goal in all of this is to start the new year at my goal weight of 120.

Happy Friday everyone!!!!

Morning all! Just have a minute before I have to get moving on my day, so I wanted to say hello!! I have some appointments later and of course, the usual laundry, dishes, etc. I promise to return later to chat and answer the QOTD and share my treasures that I bought yesterday.

Drive by posting. I have gained a freakin pound since the first of the month, ergh.
Today is busy, pay bills, finish DS18's cosplay costume, take him to Connecticon, grocery store, take DS12 to sleep over, pack, take other 2 kids to RV. Wait for DH to come home, Dinner.

I would love to get some scrapbooking done too but I don't know if that will happen. We will see.

Good morning all! :goodvibes

Huh, I did not know that. But in looking back, I can see it. I have been getting better at choosing to get off the hamster wheel in terms of reacting to things. I tell myself (and my BFF) all the time that you can not change how people act towards you, however you can change how you react to them.
It has helped tremendously.
When DS18 was little when he was upset we always made him take a deep breath, blow it out, count slowly to 10, the do another deep breath and it really helped him. He still does it.

It is hard to get off the hamster wheel at times, Buffy! :flower3: I think your post retirement plan sounds great. DH always says he wants to be able to transport everything that we own in a golf cart. LOL. :rotfl2:

Good for you for staying away from the negative nellies, Linda! :thumbsup2 I'm blaming everything that happens this week on the full moon! ::yes::

You have had such a stressful week -- you're book sounds interesting and like it is giving you some good insights! :cool2

Thanks for coaching this week! :flower3:

And a big WATP welcome to our next coach, Jill! :yay:

That is wonderful that your FitBit is showing you that you get more activity than you realized, Magdalene! :cool2: Hope your big work project gets done soon and things calm down for you. :flower3:

If you haven't coached before please think about volunteering -- it makes the challenge more fun when we have a variety of coaches.

Thank you for hostessing this month, Magdalene! :thanks:

Buffy, I am at a gain for the month myself. I bet you have some NSVs that you might not even realize. Hang in there! You can do this! :cheer2:

I had a great NSV this week because I get one free picture from my race this week-end and I actually like them all! That has never happened! :faint:

I am going to have birthday cake today and enjoy every bite. :cake: We are eating at home so I feel this is a good trade off. Back in the wagon tomorrow! :thumbsup2

Good morning from almost-vacation-land! :)

I'm up 0.6 this week, but all things considered, I think that's pretty good. In addition to the cookies I tripped over, I also downed a bag of mini York peppermint patties and shared a huge Red Robin dessert with DDs last night. So much more indulging than I usually do! But I kept running, and I think that's why the gain wasn't worse. Honestly, too, I'm still down 2 for the month, so that's good.

I always seem to have a pre-vacation slide, too, with my eating - I let things slip the week before we go away...we're eating out more (keeping the fridge clean), and I'm starting to get into that vacation mode of "ah, whatever!" :) I've tried to be mindful of it this week, and I think it was better than it would have been if I hadn't been this focused. So yay.

Oh, Lion King was amazing! We loved the production at the Kennedy Center last weekend. The kids were terrific, and the woman playing Rafiki was *insanely* good. I was less psyched with Scar, who seemed too bored the whole time - not enough evil. Maybe just too subtle a performance for the scale of the production. But we had a blast, and DDs loved being in that beautiful theater!

I'm working today, and then I'm back to packing...our room has all kinds of piles ready to go! Tomorrow DDs get their hairs trimmed, and I get a super luxurious pedicure while DH wrangles the kids' haircuts. I win tomorrow morning. ;) Then more packing, dinner out, and we leave for the airport super early on Sunday morning! Aulani, here we come!

Hope everyone has a great week - I'll miss next week's WI but will be back to face the music on the 25th...

XO
Liz

Happy Friday! I am your coach for the next few days :)

QOTD July, 11

How are you planning to stay on plan this weekend?
Do you have any fun plans?

I'll be back later with replies.

Jill

Even though its the 11th, can I still join in?

Absolutely! Welcome! Feel free to read the first page to get the feel on how things work. You can PM your weight today or this weekend since it's weigh in time and set a goal for yourself for the rest of July (PM weight to Flossbolna). If you have any questions, just ask. And, feel free to jump in the conversation and introduce yourself if you would like.

Jill

Jill

I missed two days of exercise this week because of weather. I am going to run today (my usual rest day) and I am going to get a run in tomorrow and do a cardio workout on Sunday to catch up.

Happy birthday to Lisah and Desiree!

:bday: Lisa!!! Hope you enjoy your :cake:

Have a great time Liz!

No special plans for eating healthy this weekend, just the usual stuff.

Our special event is we get DS2 back! His final concert is the great big finale of the entire Oregon Bach Festival and it'll be a huge choir singing (not just the kids). Should be fantastic. The kids alone are amazing. Can't wait to hear some professionals joining them. After the performance his 2 week camp will be over and he comes home. Today I need to mop his floor since there's no telling when I'll be able to see it again once he comes home Sunday! :rotfl2:

DS1 is housesitting this weekend so it should be a very quiet weekend--except I'm sure he'll be home for meals! Boys are like that. I almost said teens but he's not a teen anymore. :scared1:

DH has to replace the kitchen faucet because there is a teeny hole on the side and water either drips out or sprays out. It's the weirdest thing! Who knows how on earth it got a hole there?!

Our hot weather is supposed to continue. One of these years we're gonna have to get some AC! :cool2:

Hope everybody has a lovely weekend. Thanks for coaching last week Rose, and thanks for doing it this week, Jill!

QOTD~I usually don't like to post about my gains or losses, but I am super excited that I am down 3 pounds since the start of the challenge! So, I am going to continue with my eating plan this weekend. I have a 5 mile run scheduled for tomorrow morning. I will either be taking a rest day Sunday or I may thrown in a little yoga. No other plans for this weekend and I am glad to be able to get some house stuff done!

I guess everyone is enjoying the start to their weekend! I usually kill the thread, so I expected it :rotfl2:

I'll be back later tonight or very early tomorrow to post Saturday's QOTD.

Jill

Hi everyone, I already got a lot of PMs! Congratulations to those with losses, and encouragement to those who did not lose - or only a little. Keep in mind that your body is a living organism with its own mind about when it is prepared to shed those pounds!

Also a belated Happy Birthday to Lisa and Desiree!!! :flower3:

QOTD:

My weekend is going to be a busy one, busy with work that is. Not pleased, but my project is in its final stages and I know that soon things will be much better. So, the plan is to now sit down and make a meal plan for the weekend that has a few treats, but is OP, then go shopping and after that head off to work for some hours. I guess on the way home from work I will take a detour and have a nice long walk through the city and get a cappuccino (skimmed milk) at Starbucks for 2 points... And the good thing about being at work is: no food temptations available there!!! But I will bring some fruit and carrots as a snack. I think with that I do have a very good plan for the weekend!!
