Wow. I had no idea what I was in for. I went a few weeks ago with swelling and pain. Lower right wisdom tooth was impacted. I went back Monday to have it pulled.
I seriously think the dentist was trying to kill me! I felt like my head was in a vice grip the whole time. It took him an hour to get it out. It was the most horrible thing I've ever gone through! Took a pain pill as the novacain was wearing off. This made me so sick! I slept for HOURS and HOURS with a bag of ice on my face!
I have another one that I fear will need to come out also. I really don't think I could do it again.

Is it any better with an oral surgeon? My dad had 1 out each way and said one wasn't really any better than the other. Except of course the regular dentist was about $4-500 cheaper!

I had IV sedation and felt nothing. I had mine done at the local dental school and it worked out very well. I think it was $300 for all four.

I had my upper wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon. The put me under with IV sedation. Afterwards, I woke up quickly and never had any pain. Maybe I was just lucky.

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed at the same time. I went to an oral surgeon. I got laughing gas and dont remember much of it. The worst part was the dry sockets I got afterwards. I got them in all 4 holes.

When they tell you not to smoke or drink through a straw, they mean it. lol

I went to an oral surgeon and had the IV- sedation and had no pain and don't really remember a thing.:cloud9:

OMG, I can not imagine getting a tooth pulled without being sedated! :faint: :faint:

You poor thing. Did they at least give you some pankillers?

Definitely get knocked out next time!

Are your sure your tooth wasn't abcessed instead of impacted? Impacted means the tooth is still in the bone instead of out through the gum. They are removed surgically instead of pulled. Most general dentists wouldn't dream of doing it. Of course, maybe your tooth was mostly impacted and he tried to pull it and had difficulty -- gives me the willies just thinking about it.

The fact that it took an hour to get your tooth out says all you need to know about whether it should have been done that way. My wisdom teeth are just regular teeth at the back of my mouth, but I think I would go to an oral surgeon if I had them out.

I had all 4 pulled under sedation. Gave me pain pills and all was fine. ;) That's the way to do it in my opinion.

I just had my lower right wisdom tooth pulled yesterday, by an oral surgeon under IV sedation. (You should still be able to find my thread, wanting assurance that it would be okay.) They put in the IV and next thing I knew it was totally over. I was TOTALLY out. I don't even remember opening my mouth. This is Day 2 and I'm in a bit of pain, but I have good painkillers. The whole thing took less than an hour, from when I arrived in the office to when I left. IV sedation is definitely the way to go!

I had all 4 of mine out at once. I went to an Oral Surgeon. They gave me a little gas, then an IV and next thing I know I was waking up on a little couch. I felt nothing. I took 2 days off of work, and spent the second day in the pool, then went to Applebees for happy hour, I felt fine.

If you have another one, I would absolutely go to an Oral Surgeon.

i had 4 impacted wisdow teeth removed at once by an oral surgeon. i had iv sedation, so the surgery part was fine. the aftermath really sucked, but i guess that is probably standard after having so much trauma to your mouth. like you, the pian pills i had (percocet) mad me feel sick. i couldn't do anything while taking them other than sleep so after day 2, i stopped taking them.

i was not 100% better for almost 2 months since i had dry socket and an infection. i was not able to eat normal food for a week or two. i still have problems with my jaw sometimes.

btw, impacted doesn't necessarily mean not erupted. all of mine were impacted but all partially erupted as well. the roots were bumping/deforming the jawbone, eventhough the tops of them were out. mine all looked like normal teeth on the surface. you could only see the problem if you looked at the x-ray.

luckily, my insurance covered most of the cost.

i would never dream of having my wisdom teeth out with a regular dentist, jmho.

Holy smokes! I have had 2 wisdom teeth out, and both only took a matter of minutes to pull them. I am so sorry you had such an awful experience.

I went to an oral surgeon, so maybe that makes a difference? If you are able to, I would look into one if you need to have another pulled.

I had have all 4 my widsom teeth out at the same time because they decide to come in all at once and had to be sedation.

Oh yeah! It sure is!!! I had one out by my dentist and the rest were taken out by the oral surgeon. I was so afraid to go to the oral surgeon after the dentist visit. It was so easy and pain-free. If you have to have the rest of them removed go to the oral surgeon and have him take out the remaining 3 all at the same time. You'll be gald you did some day. I know I am now.

My wisdom teeth never had a chance to grow in as my braces had pushed my other teeth over the area where they would pop out. Therefore, I had to have mine removed surgically. It was 1971 and they actually put me in the hospital:eek: I went in early one morning and they put me under general anesthesia. When I woke up it was all over. I had to stay one night in the hospital, went home the next morning. Other than having a sore throat for a few days, there was no pain. Glad I got that done when I did. :D

I had my two top wisdom teeth that were impacted pulled by a oral surgeon . My dental insurance was maxed out and I didn't want to spend the extra money (hundreds) to be put under, so I was only given novicane . It was one the worst experiences of my life. It took over a hour and I was crying pretty much the whole time. He kept asking me are you sure you don't want to be put under. The next day my cheeks were black and blue. If I had to do it over again I would pay the extra money.
