Wisdom Tooth Pulled - Any rides I can't do?

Thank you all for the advice. As someone who has never had a cavity filled, much less teeth pulled out, I appreciate all the advice I can get! I will make sure to load up on soft foods, avoid straws, and follow all of the doctor's advice (dry socket doesn't sound like fun at all!)

Too bad it can't be done after the trip . . . but there doesn't seem to be any other way. If anyone else is there at the end of July and you see a girl with chipmunk cheeks and a loopy look (either from pain meds or grand marnier slushies) feel free to say hi! ;)

I had 3 of mine taken out last Tuesday. The two top ones were pulled out, and the bottom one had to be cut out, so I still have stitches in that one (which are driving me crazy right now).

So if I were headed to WDW this week, I'd bring plenty of water, whatever pain meds you have--although if it's two weeks later, you probably won't need anything stronger than Mortin or Advil, which is all I'm taking now. Also rinsing my mouth using warm water and salt is really helping too, you might want to try doing that as well as keeping yourself hydrated.

As far as food, I'm still eating mostly soft stuff, since the back of my mouth is still healing and pretty sore. I'd stay away from the turkey legs, but ice cream works great, as do french fries and mac & cheese.

As far as the rides, I went to the movies yesterday and my jaw ached whenever the car bumped, so use your discretion on the roller coasters. Just do whatever you feel comfortable doing.

And definitely listen to the rest of the advice on here. The first day or so can be rough, but as long as you're following instructions and getting plenty of rest, it should get better really quick. And then those teeth are gone and you don't have to worry about them anymore.

Good luck!! :)

OK, sorry to hijack the thread but I have to have 2 root canals done in about 2 1/2 weeks and I'm freaking out...any stories out there to put me at ease?(the doc already gave me a prescription for valium!)

Ya just get it done as soon as possible, I had two pulled and it took me a solid week to recover...wouldn't want to go anywhere for the first three days...yuck :scared:

Make sure and ask for a prescription for pain. It will help your aching feet, errrrr I mean "aching mouth".

Seriously though, I had one pulled a few months ago and it was nothing, I went out right after and had Taco Bell. I got the drug prescription filled though, never one to turn those down and I did use a few. Actually I am having another one pulled about a month before we go.

Let us know how you are feeling.

I completely understand your fear. I have needed my widsom teeth out for 7 yrs and refuse to have them removed because I am scared to death.

Good luck on your removal and I hope you have a great time on your trip.

I just had 2 done about 6 years ago and it was no big deal. They were not compacted or anything. Never even took any of the drugs and don't remember there being much pain if any. That night I was hungry so I put the meal my family ate into one of those babyfood grinder and ate it that way. I think by the next day I was eating regular food. Hopefully you will have an easy time like I did. My husband had his done a few years later and didn't have any problems either. fine by the next day.

I really doubt you will have any problems 2 weeks after having them removed. I had mine out a month ago on a Friday (at the age of 31). The top two they pulled and the bottom two were impacted. I went home and took my pain medicine all day Friday, but had no pain. I decided Saturday just to wait to see what happened. I ended up taking some Advil for a headache. By 11:00 I was starving and wanted to go out to eat, so we went to Golden Corral where I had several different soft foods. At one point, I told DH that I thought that it was supposed to hurt, but I really had no pain. On Sunday, I had a hamburger. Buy Monday, I was eating normal foods. I even had some potato chips. I would suggest avoiding rice for the first week. I got a piece stuck in one of the holes and had to pry it out with my fingernail. I went back to work on Monday, but if I had to, I could have worked on Saturday. I really felt fine. I hope you have a similar experience to me. It really was no big deal.

I am a complete dentist-phobe...regular cleanings terrify me. And trust me, I would still have my wisdome teeth if it weren't for the fact that they were trying to come through and the pain was horrible (they were impacted pretty badly). My oral surgeon was amazing (and cute to boot). I was supposed to have sedation but still be awake, but he ended up just giving me deep sedation "on the house" because I was so nervous (and I suspect because they were so badly impacted). I woke up and felt nothing because I was so doped up on meds and really the only horrible part was eating because my jaw was so tight back there - the dr actually said he cuts it that way so the jaw ends up being sore a little longer but it is not as close to one of the nerves (?) or something like that. The stitches fell out on their own. I followed his recommendations to a tee and had no problems whatsoever. Anyway, my point is that it was nowhere near as bad as I had expected.

I have a question for those of you that have had them pulled because they were already out - why did you need them pulled? If your mouth had room for them and everything, why take them out? Just curious.

:scared1: Yes rice was definitely on my "not allowed" list from the oral surgeon for that very reason.

oh and after my surgery I was prescribed Percocet (:thumbsup2 ) and an oral rinse to keep it nice and clean back there. Only took the percocets for about 2 days...then I took tylenol pm at night just so I could relax enough to fall asleep for a couple days.

Mine got infected. I had one that grew out sideways and was cutting into the inside of my cheek whenever I chewed, so it had to come out. The rest weren't much better, so they had to go.

I still have a 4th one, but it's not causing any problems so they left it. 3 at one time was enough!

My only advice is to get it done ASAP. I got a "dry socket" with mine, and that requires follow up trips to the oral surgeon for a few days to have it treated - no way to do it on your own b/c they have to pack the place where the tooth was with medicated gauze - sorry if you're squeamish! It's not common but not unheard of, and it would be complicated if it happened on vacation. Even that cleared up within a few days though.

I'm sure you'll be fine and good luck!

I had dry socket as well, it was one of the most painful things! I was actually very dizzy and nauseus the following day (I had all 4 surgically removed) and then I developed the awful pain. I don't know how I developed it because I ate basically nothing and did not use a straw. The guaze was absolutely disgusting but it did wonders almost immediately.

For starts I only have/had the upper two, never grew the bottom ones, some people don't.

For the one I had pulled it had a huge cavity in it that is pretty much inaccessable to repair, so they pulled it. The one I'm having pulled in a few weeks, also has a cavity (I have REALLY bad teeth, it's genetics, my parents are bad too), and it is at a weird angle, and since it doesn't have a contact point with a bottom tooth, there is no real reason to keep it. I thought since it went into a spot where I had a molar pulled (told you BAD teeth) that it would be ok, but nope. Hopefully it will pop out as easily as the other one did.

Well all 4 of mine came in just fine with plenty of room. And they are just pulling out two. Why you ask? Well I got a cavity in one (first one of those too!) and they are pulling the top one as well so my alignment doesn't get messed up.

Well my WDW trip is only 3 weeks away and I found out today I will need to have 2 wisdom teeth pulled before my trip. :scared: I have never had any dental work done before (lucky, I know). So my question is do you think there are rides I won't be able to do while I am at WDW? Thanks!

I assume your wisdom teeth are actually causing you pain right now... if so then there is nothing you can do. However, some dentist enjoy taking out wisdom teeth that aren't causing any problems simply because it makes them money.

If it isn't causing you pain at the moment there really isn't any reason to hurry up and take them out... You could wait until you get back from the trip.

As I sit hear I have two wisdom teeth one one that is impact and one that is simply doing nothing but sitting in the back giving me another tooth to floss and brush... One dentist suggested I get them pulled... the periodontist saw no point... given my age mid-forties and the fact that the impacted tooth wasn't actually messing up any of the teeth around it there was no reason to worry about it. The other tooth was optional, it wasn't going to cause any problems in the near term and if it started to later I could elect to have it removed then.... In other words, if you aren't having serious problems now, you might want to get a second opinion... And if it isn't causing pain there is no reason you would have to have it done in the next 3 weeks....

Yep - I only had them on the bottom...nothing on top. Thanks to you and the others for answering my question :thumbsup2

I was wondering this too...my dentist had been trying to get me to have mine pulled since I was about 26 (I'm 28 now). It wasn't until last year that they started bothering me that I finally had them out.

I doubt you can depend on others experiences with this. I had 4 impacted and all 4 out at once - they knocked me out. I was drugged the rest of that day (on a Friday) but I was fine the next day. My bosses daughter on the other had had 4 pulled (not impacted) and ended up with dry sockets and swollen face and the whole 9 yards!!
