Wisdom Tooth Pulled - Any rides I can't do?

Some people have teeth pulled and are up about that day with no problems ever.

Some people get knocked on their butt for a couple days and lie around swallowing Percocets and cursing God for giving them bad wisdom teeth.

I'm sure that if you talk to the oral surgeon and tell him you need to get on a plane on a certain day that he'll schedule you in well before that. I had the very same thing happen to me and they got me right in. :)

DH thought he remembered at warning at Mission Space and suggested I ask if there would be any rides that I would have an issue with. Worst case scenario . . . I hang out in France drinking Grand Marnier slushies. :-)

Not teeth specific...none of the warnings have anything to do with dental work. MS warns against motion sickness, pregnancy, heart conditions, and probably recent surgery, but wisdom teeth don't count in that. Let me see if I can find a pic of the sign here...there go. Boy I love google...

It's very important to know when exactly you are getting them extracted. There is situation called a "dry socket" that can occur. Not to be gross, but essentially the blood clot comes out of the hole and exposes your nerve. While it is VERY painful, it can be remedied very easily. Essentially they put some gauze soaked in some numbing medication into the wound area and it's a little piece of heaven. To try and prevent this from happening , DO NOT USE A STRAW at all! Sounds like I'm speaking from experience, huh? My doc told me I could eat a steak dinner that night. What a joke. It was sore for days, but once the pain meds kicked in (and I got that dry socket taken care of) it was fine. Good luck!

Yes, no drinking out of straws, no smoking (if you do..) no super hot liquids, no hard crusty breads or anything with nuts or popcorn for the first week or so. These items may move that clot out of place. These are all things your Oral Surgeon should tell you right up front. A Dry socket is very painful and really never has to happen if your doctor gives you proper instructions. Try to get the procedure done as early before your trip as possible and you will be fine! :goodvibes Take care to stay hydrated on your trip and if you are on any pain meds, make sure you follow precautions on the bottle about driving, etc.. Best of Luck to you! I'm sure you will do fine, there are all varrying types of wisdom teeth extractions some are a bit more involved than others but some are super easy too! Please post and let us know how you do! :)

You should be fine to ride, but be careful and think before you mix any pain meds with the Grand Marnier slushies. I had three surgically removed as they were impacted and they were awful, I had one pulled and it ws not nearly as bad. of course the pain of one tooth verssu three at once might account fo that or that I had the three done while in 8th grade and the fourth right after DS now 17 was born, so I think I was around 25. The bleeding and pain is significantly higher when the impacted ones are removed as it is more of a surigical procedure and therefore more bloody. I believe I was instructed to rinse with warm salt water and found that to help to clean and heal things up a bit faster.
good luck!

Are you flying? You should check with your dentist first to be sure it's okay.

Thanks for all of your help! I will admit that I am totally freaked out about getting this done. They are just pulling them out since they aren't impacted. My appointment is for next Friday, which is a little over 2 weeks from the time of my trip. But their office is open 7 days a week from 6 am until 10 pm...so I am thinking I should just get it done with today and add in some additional recovery time before the trip.

Dole Whips? Must say I haven't tried them before, but they sound yummy! :)

If you have them pulled next Friday, you should be fine by the time you go to WDW. Two weeks will be more than enough time to recover. I'm pretty sure the recovery is much easier if you have them pulled than if they were impacted. My son had four impacted ones taken out last year. He was home from college for winter break at the time and I took him back to school about three days later. He was feeling fine. I know he was totally recovered by two weeks. I think one of the big concerns during recovery is developing dry sockets.

I had my wisdom teeth out about 3 weeks before our 06 trip and didn't have any problems, even after I had pain a lot longer than they anticipated.

If they're being pulled, you'll be fine. Maybe it's pure luck, but mine were easy (didn't even fill the painkiller scrip), and I can't think of anybody in my family or circle of friends who had anything approaching the nightmare experiences people outlined here (not that I disbelieve them, just that you shouldn't assume that you're going to have any kind of bad experience at all). Have somebody drive you home, go to bed, and sleep off the drugs, and have some soft food available for the first couple of meals.

I have had teeth surgically removed twice and never really had a problem and never took the pain meds.

You should be fine.

Have Fun!

I only had 2 wisdom teeth, both on the bottom, pulled last yer as I had none on the top. They were impacted and one was sideways - yikes. Anyway, I had them out on a Friday afternoon and went back to school/work on Tuesday. I did take pain meds but overall it went very well. By a full week after I was pretty much back to normal although I was being extra careful when I ate crunchy foods. For you, especially since it is just being pulled(and I don't mean just as in "it's no big deal"), I would think 2 weeks should be plenty of healing time and you would be good to go for your trip. You know your mouth though...I remember having a horrible toothache a long time ago while at WDW and I avoided roller coasters simply because I knew I would yell and scream a lot and that aggravated the pain so I completely understand your question. Be sure to follow the recommendations the dentist gives you for after the extraction....mine was no straws, hot foods, rice....I lived on mac-n-cheese, mashed potatoes, gatorade and ice cream for almost a week. Lost close to 15 lbs in 2 weeks too. Good luck to you!

Wow. Well that would be a pleasant side effect! I decided to go ahead and just have it done on Friday. I am sure everything will go well and that I will be healed in time for Disney. My dentist said flying shouldn't be an issue either. When I am at the parks, I will play things by ear. Whatever the situation, I will at least be at WDW and I having a great time.

Well to be truthful, I was having pain prior to having them out (hence the reason they came out) so I was eating very little, then I was so nervous prior, my stomach was too upset to eat anything. And after I was eating such small bites that I'd be full in 2 seconds and it was such a pain to eat that I just didn't have the desire to do so. Plus I had the 15+ lbs to lose (still do unfortunately). Then there are people like an old high school friend who went out for a steak dinner the same night they came out. You couldn't have paid me to eat one bite of steak that night.

I'm sure you'll be fine! Like everyone else has said, be sure to notify you're Dentist that you will be going on vacation and if there is anything you should be aware about or concerned with.

A little over two years ago, I have all 4 of mine removed. It wasn't much of an ordeal (but a good excuse to lay in bed for a couple days). The pain was minimal (to be honest, can't remember if there was any). Only thing that felt uncomfortable was right after I woke up from it being done, my lips felt really swollen - must have been the way they were keeping my mouth open.

Like everyone said, no straws, hot drinks/soups, etc. Your doc should give you a syringe too that you'll use to clean out the 'holes' with salt water.

You'll be ok. But if you're really nervous about it, perhaps ask the dentist if there is anyway you can postpone it until after you've returned.

I'm sure all will be well and wish you the best.

Well my WDW trip is only 3 weeks away and I found out today I will need to have 2 wisdom teeth pulled before my trip. :scared: I have never had any dental work done before (lucky, I know). So my question is do you think there are rides I won't be able to do while I am at WDW? Thanks!

Well, personally I think I would avoid the Walt Disney World Choo Choo! Hee Hee... man, I crack myself up.:lmao:

My only advice is to get it done ASAP. I got a "dry socket" with mine, and that requires follow up trips to the oral surgeon for a few days to have it treated - no way to do it on your own b/c they have to pack the place where the tooth was with medicated gauze - sorry if you're squeamish! It's not common but not unheard of, and it would be complicated if it happened on vacation. Even that cleared up within a few days though.

I'm sure you'll be fine and good luck!

I was terrified that I would get a dry-socket and when I went back to my oral surgeon a week later for my follow up, I expressed my concern that I might have had one and not realized it. The nurse assured me that they happen within a couple days of the surgery and you KNOW because the nerve is completely exposed - OUCH!

Something to think about...

from second hand personal experience:

Vicadin + Mission Space = BAD TIMES

Seriously, ANY spinning, moving, dizzying ride is going
to be 10 time worse on vicadin or any medication
that is a massive pain killer if your body is NOT used to
them (disregard this if your body tolerates these kind
of drugs easily). I had a puking, sick, horribly upset
mother after our attempt at many of the "fun" rides at
epcot and DHS (then MGM) and it just wasn't a good time.

Medications that require anti-nausea supplements are
NEVER good to take when riding roller coasters... don't
turn green!

Otherwise, go for it! If you handle drugs well or are doing the
surgery outpatient like (no ortho-surgeon, just novicane and
a pair of pliars) then you should be good!

Out of the entire vacation, I would be most concerned with flying and the pressure in the cabin.

Can you not just reschedule it for when you return home?

Only ride you couldnt do is the one where you get out of your car, get on this tram thingy then walk up to a ticket booth where they bash you in the head and take your money.........wait, maybe thats at Universal...:rolleyes1
