Wisdom teeth removal - pros and cons

I had all 4 of mine removed in my late 40's early 50's for different reasons. None of the extractions caused problems.

I had an upper wisdom tooth crack and it was a very easy removal -- slid right out. I was in my early 30's. My dental hygienist recommended I have the other 3 removed also. Every 6 month cleaning for years she would recommend it and say that they were just back there collecting plaque. Finally I gave in. It was HORRIBLE. I went to the oral surgeon and they asked if I wanted to be put out and I said no since the first removal has been so easy. BIG mistake. Teeth would not come out and had to cracked and taken out in pieces. No pain but the sensation of cracking and pulling was awful. He had to stop at one point and take a break. After it was done he said it had been an extremely difficult removal.

My then 16yr old son had his wisdom teeth removed because they were in the way of his 12 yr molars dropping. Well, the surgeon removed one of his molars by mistake. :( So he left the wisdom tooth in hoping it will drop in the molars place. I guess we'll see what happens otherwise he will need an implant.

UPDATE:
Looks like my DD is going to get her wisdom teeth removed. She has one tooth coming in and it is "clipping her molar and will end up causing all kinds of problems if it comes in that way." Why the hygienist couldn't have told me that last week is beyond me. Oh well. At least I know now. I have no problem having the procedure done when something is actually wrong. Being told she needs to have it done, but there isn't anything wrong is a totally different thing, imo.

It will be a piece of cake!
Better now rather than later.

When you go to the oral surgeon they will recommend ifthey need to come out our not. My DD just had hers out because her 12 year molars weren't coming in and her teeth were shifting after $7000 worth of work! She had a horrible time after, the Versed made her so sick and she threw up so much she ended up in the ER that night for IVF, comparing and pain control :( Ask for a script for Zofran, that is my advice! And she said Motrin worked better that Percoset.

Good
Luck!
