Wisconsin Capitol locked down

I didn't know if this counted. I will erase my original post. But it is a breaking story and pretty major news.

I agree but things will go downhill fast on here because some people will spout certain views.

We, in public service in Ohio, are watching in horror what happens in Wisconsin.

Hard to believe that someone can come along and wipe the rights of so many away, with a signature, and so quickly. :sad2:

TC:cool1:

Am I missing something, if so please forgive my ignorance. As I understand it all they did was make it necessary for people to contribute some of their benefits and remove seniority protections.

BTW, I don't have a view one way or the other. I've never been in a union nor has DH and we manage to pay our bills anyway. I not being a wiseguy or anything, I really don't understand why this is considered so unreasonable:confused:

No, what they did was take away the right to negotiate as a group. Big difference.

Most of the country doesn't get to do that yet manage to get jobs and survive, at least those people who sill have jobs. I understand no-one likes to lose stuff but they seem to be carrying on like the sky is falling. What is going to be different next week from this week?

They eliminated the act of group negotiation , not the right. Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no constitutional right to union bargaining agreements or group negotiation.

I have to wonder if this was part of the problem. Many white collar positions have had to deal with these cuts for years now. Nobody liked it, people complained about it, but pretty much accepted things as they were dealt. What if there had been more of a stink raised by the white collar positions when all this started becoming the norm? Instead, it's - we had to take it, now you do too. Just musing - maybe nothing would have changed, but who knows?

What's changing is we, as a country, are eliminating the middle class. People are getting angry about this. You can sit on the sidelines and look down on people for standing up for their rights if you want, and say too bad, so sad but from watching many blogs/new reports this looks like the start of a history making revolution.

Keeping my personal political opinion out of this post (;)), it's quickly becoming a dangerous situation.

DH has to drive around the Capitol today and I told him to stay away, regardless of how far out of his way he has to go.

I wouldn't be surprised if riots erupted at some point today.

:thumbsup2 I'm very proud it's happening in my state and people are standing up for what they believe in. :) It isn't going to go away anytime soon.

Unions, like any other business or entity, in today's economy, must make themselves relevant and useful. EVERYONE is bending, making adjustments etc and so must unions. If they want to be considered, they must adapt as well. And please don't tell me they are adapting, as I deal with unions and collective bargaining agreements in our business everyday. Our industry just had to negotiate the new contract and finally had to go to court and get a mediator. The union finally budged as the mediator decided.

The more people think that the power of their well-being is in unions, the worse off we will be. You control your destiny, you have the power. The more I keep hearing union leader rhetoric and the way these leaders spew such divisive commentary, the more I worry. The idea that people think that they have no rights without a union backing them is down right unsettling to me.

I'm just glad the OP posted something so that I could go and look it up online and find out what was happening today.

Global news hardly ever mentions Wisconsin - I've been following events through the Daily Show.

It's been going on for weeks.

Agreed. Welcome to what so many of us have experienced out here in the private world. Disappearing pensions? Check. Shrinking benefits? Check. Loss of job security? Check. All with the stroke of a pen, or the issuance of a memo.

I know - I watch the Daily Show Monday to Thursday.

But there's been next to no coverage of it on the Canadian television news stations. We're more interested in Libya and what it's going to do to the price of gas. Whether hits should be penalized in hockey. Oh... and what being found in contempt of parliament will mean for Bev Oda.
