Wireless Internet Onboard

So, you pay $1000s for a cruise - then spend much of it on the internet? :rotfl2:
When you have a job you can't be away from for 2 weeks, there isn't much of an option.

Fortunately for me, I'll only need to spend an hour or so a day maximum "at work" on the ship. But an hour a day at those WiFi prices would be insane. So if they're charging on the Magic in 3.5 weeks, I'll have to settle for paying for the unlimited access package and pray I can get onto their terminals for a couple of 30 minute segments every day.

.

A guy I worked with tried that line to get out of jury duty. Judge's response was "What would your employer do if you were in a coma for 2 weeks? What would your employer do if you died? They can do without you for two weeks, and if you continue to complain it will be 4 weeks, 2 for jury duty, and 2 in jail for contempt, and if your boss has a problem with that, tell him to talk to me, but warn him he may get 2 weeks in jail also for contempt"

heh, i'm picturing mickey mouse in a powdered wig and a gavel looking sternly at ivanova right now!

I agree at those prices I would rarely use wireless, maybe to send a few pics home. But still, it's over 75 cents/minute at the smallest package.

The only time I've had issues in the cafe was the repo cruise...people just do different things when "trapped" on a ship at sea for two weeks....apparently hang out on the internet was one of those things people do.

In the middle of the night there are interesting people, conversations, more... Getting a washer and dryer was easier than getting a computer. Although when the internet was down there were plenty free to play solitaire :).

My problem isn't the "day job" boss - they're giving me 2 weeks vacation, don't want to hear from, don't want to see me. (And fortunately they'll pay me for 2 weeks of jury duty if that became an issue)

The "problem" is that I'm also a travel agent - a one woman shop, no one to "mind the store" so to speak, and I can't afford to miss sales because I was nonresponsive on the emails for 2 weeks. It'll be bad enough that clients will be "stuck" with only email as an option (cell phones have a funny way of not working out in the middle of the ocean), but being out of contact for 2 weeks can potentially cause me to lose clients - which is not quite the good customer service that I want to portray. :teeth:

Take a closer look. This is just on the Wonder so far, not the Magic.

thanks. but i had clarified in my original post:

The page specifically mentions wireless for the Wonder, and I was just wondering if anyone knows how long this has been running and what people's first-hand experience is on it.

I heard recently that they're running tests on the Magic, and during these tests, the service was free. I'm hoping that's still the case when we're on the Magic less than 4 weeks from now, because the prices are quite high!

there was a recent trip report from the magic that showed wireless was already working (but "in testing") on the magic. someone on another board recently communicated with the cm on the magic in charge of the internet cafe (i think), and said that they will be charging for wireless on the repo cruise (which is the one i'm concerned about), but the prices will be slightly different for that specific cruise (like $105 for 300 minutes instead of the $100 for 250 minutes listed on dcl's site).

I was on the phone with DCL while looking at this so I asked about it. So far nothing's in their system regarding the Magic and wireless access. :flower:

i'm sure there's nothing official, but this post makes it look like it's operational already, and i guess someone got in touch with cm danielle who told them it will be running (and unfortunately charging) by the repo.

Oh my! I can actually go on a Disney cruise for $1000 :rotfl2: Please tell me how??????????

I think you might have missed that little "s" after the zeros, making it thousands, not thousand. :rotfl:

I was under the impression that when the Magic goes into Drydock DCL may install wireless internet.

It's already existed - some CMs have to use it for their job - since they've activated it on the Wonder without going through drydock, it appears possible to activate on the Magic without waiting for drydock in October.

Wow, you MUST be busy. How do you juggle a full time day job and being a travel agent too? Aren't you basically on call 24/7/365 as a travel agent? :scared1:
How does your day job boss feel about you having to do TA stuff during your day job?

Basically sacrificing sleep and "free time" at this point. But ultimately it'll be worth it in the end.

So far, haven't had the "joy" of TA work needing to be done during "day job" hours ... ironically bulk of current clients are day job coworkers that are booked on a fundraising group cruise, so working on the group is "day job" work (for the contributions committee promoting the fundraising cruise).

Once the TA business gets far enough to sustain me alone (sooner than later I hope) the day job is going buh-bye. :teeth:
