Winter running gear

It has been crazy and I'm OK with it staying that way...although I know 2 years in a row would be too much of a stretch. I'm actually running the Pgh Marathon this year. I knew a couple of trainers at the gym who ran it last year and told me that I should run it next year. All I'd have to do is work up to it (since I've never ran more than 4 miles before last year's Marathon). They suggested that I run a half marathon first and that is why I'll be running the Disney half in a few weeks!

I want to run Pittsburgh too - just not sure whether I should run the half or the full! Not sure if I want to jump right back into full marathon training!

Nothing is more technical and girly than lululemon! UA fits just don't work for my body at all. I bought FIL two UA mocks for Christmas for Golf!

I hate to say this and risk an angry mob, but I won't wear Lululemon on principle. I know it's good stuff, but I just can't do it. Around here, it is the clothing of choice for the trophy wives who neither work nor workout. I'm sure it's not the same everywhere, but here if you wear Lululemon, you can be sure you've never seen a paycheck or broken a sweat.

Winter running is all about the layers. I generally start with a tata tamer then a light tank to wick sweat. Next goes on the tech long sleeve most of mine have Disney on them. Then on the really cold days I will top it all off with a soft shell. For my legs I go with either capris or tights then for cold/windy days I have a pair of Nike windbreaker running pants to go over the tights.

With this being said I have not been able to break out my winter gear in four years. Live someplace where winter gear is tank and shorts.

Oh you won't offend me! But the company is literally amazing and does so much for their communities. I don't care how many trophy wives wear it! The quality and guarantee are unparalleled and how much they give back is awesome.

For me it is the attitude of the local store. They were really mean to a friend of mine, and their clothing is only for small-medium people. They are quite 'preppy' in this area too, and worn as a fashion statement rather than as workout gear. Also the daughter of one of my friends had to quit working for them when they were not going to let her change her hours when she went to university, so she had to quit.

I must live in a boring town. I had never heard of lululemon before the Dis-Wish boards. I also never really noticed any trophy wives around either (wearing lulu or not) - I guess I could be naive...:confused3

Anyhow, I'll wear whatever works best at whatever the point of it is from wherever I can afford in my budget. If the goal is great apparel for a workout then that's what I'd seek out. If I want to "look good" and/or be comfy, and it's a workout type of outfit that fits best or looks best, then I guess I'd wear that too although usually for me it's jeans. Hmmmm.... never thought about this before.

I did see an awesome pair of running pants on lululemon's website the other day that i think I might treat myself to sometime for a birthday present or mothers day or something. So I appreciate the recommendation to check out the site.

disKid & Steph - not sure where in PA/Pittsburgh you exactly live, but have either of you ever run down along the river by Heinz field and PNC park, science center, etc? I never have b/c I don't want to go alone and don't have a running partner usually (DH and I split workouts b/c of DS) but my sis is in town and I thought it would be fun. Not sure where to park.....

I'm sure they are an awesome company and I know the stuff is good. It just has such a negative connotation here (for those of us who don't fit the trophy wife demographic) that I just can't bring myself to wear it. I kind of wish I could though because I do hear great things about it. It makes no sense, I know. :upsidedow

The clothes definitely are not just for small mediums at all, they go up to XL and the XL fits my friend who is 200 lbs. They are Canadian sizes so their 12 is much bigger than a us 12.

I am about 60 miles from the city so I don't run there. I have, however, walked that stretch and it is very nice. I would recommend parking at the casino - it is free and opens up to that riverwalk.

Oooh! New idea. Plays some slots, then go for a run! LOL.

Actually, I after I posted, i googled pittsburgh running a little and ended up finding a link to the "Three Rivers Heritage Trail" which I think is basically where I'm referring to. I'm looking at the map on their website now....

That's the trail where I first started "long distance" running. In college we used to run from Three Rivers Rowing on Washington's Landing, past Three Rivers Stadium, to the Science Center and back when the rivers were too rough to row on. Of course, that's about 15 years ago now so I'm sure there are improvements.

Figment - I ran the Pirates 5k last April and it was along the river and we ended up finishing at home plate inside PNC Park. That was pretty cool. The training group that I have just joined is running down there this weekend and will probably be utilizing that trail quite a bit over the next few months. I heard it gets really cold there because of the wind that blows off the rivers. I'll be running some places this year that I have never been too so it will be quite interesting. FYI, the group splits into different paces, so I know I won't be alone (and my wife is happy about that, because she doesn't want to get a call from me saying, "Come get me...I'm lost":lmao:

My only addition is for running in the rain. I live in WA the state and winter running requires a top waterproof layer. I own a bright pink Northface rain jacket w/arm pit vents anda hood. I also run in thick SmartWool socks in the winter months.
