Winter Olympics

I have a question about the opening ceremonies. It isn’t important but it kept bugging me. The 5 kids that were used throughout, 4 were wearing coats of the Olympic colors but the 5th was wearing beige instead of green. Is green an unlucky color or something?

I read elsewhere the colors were supposed to represent elements that are important in Korean culture, such as water, fire, earth, etc.

The snowboarders certainly support each other, medallists all seem pretty happy for each other.

Happy for the young American guy who won gold! And happy for Canada winning their first medals in silver and bronze.

I love the Olympics but have been running around all weekend and haven't seen anything since the opening ceremony. Finally getting to watch now. Loved watching the men's free skate tonight, and I thought Rippon's comments were adorable. Looking forward to going back and catching up on the other events that happened over the last two days.

The women in slopestyle are having some serious problems in round 1.

The wind. And it got worse in round 2. In hindsight, they probably shouldn't have gone with it tomorrow at all. (yes technically it took place tomorrow.

Clearly I have no idea how figure skating is scored. I thought the American dancers (an adorable brother and sister pair) and the Japanese ladies' singles skater were the absolute class of the field tonight. They did not come close to being first in their respective events.

The Shibutani's were amazing but Virtue and Moir literally commanded the arena...it was mesmerizing. Well deserved score and medals for all!

The Japanese ladies singles person didn't have the technical difficulty. It has become a nuclear arms race of jumps.

Virtue and Moir are national heroes but honestly, I LOVED the Shibutani kids. Not sure about the technical difficulty or whatnot, but their program was incredibly engaging. And not that they get points for this (I don't think), but am I the only one who noticed how freakin' amazingly gorgeous looking all those Italians are?

Haven't seen a of the Olympics. Loved the skating last night. And the 17 year old snow boarder. The skier who got all tangled up, broke his pole and came out with a gold.

I have been struck by how 'international' the competitors are. You have to actually know/hear what country they are representing. For instance, the Shibutani kids don't look like traditinal Americans. Then there are some from US on other teams. I love it. Shows you how the world is becoming a smaller place.

And how can the one figure skating coach coach so many different countries?

That wasn't safe or fair to the athletes.

Yeah, that wind didn't seem fair to everyone - you'd like to see a competition where most of the athletes have a chance to do their best and seeing one competitor after another either crash or just bail from their jumps didn't make for a fun competition.

And I still don't understand figure skating.

If anyone is interested, the Scranton Times/Sunday Times had a very nice front page article on Adam Rippon who is from Clarks Summit, PA. It told about how much he had to overcome (injuries/money) to get to the Olympics and the article said that he speaks his mind (loved the comment about the Xanax and drink to calm him down!!) and he is really a very genuine person. Nice to see him do so well last night and he certainly helped the US win bronze.

Yeah, that's the impression I got. During someones skate, I really don't remember who or even what event of the team competition, one of the commentators basically said if you attempted a quad and fell you would still get the same number of points as you would if you had landed a clean triple. It used to be there was more emphasis put on a clean program....technical difficulty was still important but you were better off doing smaller tricks you could land cleanly than attempting things you were shaky on. It's not that way anymore so now you see some people attempting monster tricks and falling on their backsides all the time because it doesn't hurt their score to try them.

I think I like the old way better.
