Wine lovers thread

I love a good riesling! Schmitt-Soehne is my favorite. I live near a bunch of wineries so I try to support those too.

How do you pick a new wine to try? I usually just pick the one with the coolest label or name!:rotfl:

I'll occasionally have a glass of Zinfandel, but not often. My friends know this so bought me this for a housewarming. Of course I'll never open it!;)

My favorite used to be chardonnay for it's oak flavor. Then for some reason the same thing I'd drank for years became too oakey for me. Kinda strange but I switched to sauvignon blanc and then pinot grigio. I can still appreciate them all but my current favorite is pinot grigio.

Same thing happened to me. Right now I'm having a glass of Turning Leaf Pinot Grigio. I also like the Mirassou Pinot Noir.

just got back from TJ's as well~ Presecco - and some 3 buck chuck!! Last year - actually year before last technically - they do a Beajoulis Neveau - and it was brilliant, awesome - usually we can only find DeBeouff for the Neveau - and it has no depth and is $12 (this is a French phenom. that you are tasting the new harvest, and its such a new vintage you need to drink it before the snow melts - they used to have a huge tado with the planes flying the vintage over here - it was fun... but the price went way up, and its not that good - but Charles Shaw did one that was amazing... Last year (end of '08) it was very.. ok to not good...

Love doing the Wine Flights at WDW - esp at the France Pavillion - Artist Points wine flight was really nice....

we've gone for Food and Wine fest also - its just not as good as it once was... more crowded, less events... more money - the Party of the Senses used to be $90 per person - I know its well over $100 and it was very crowded last year... sad that...

we're going to Try Chicago's wine festival this year!

DH and I take a wine tasting class about once every 5 years and just finished our most recent class a few weeks ago. :thumbsup2 We are edging up on much much we'll pay for wine and we're now willing to pay up to $20 a bottle. I KNOW that is pure foolishness, but our wicked, wicked wine tasting teacher (clever owner of the wine shop) introduced us to a sparkling white wine that was clearly bottled in Heaven. :cloud9: Marcel Martin, 20 bucks a bottle, don't blame me if you love it and get hooked!:lmao:

That said, I still enjoy Fetzer White Zinfindel with pizza or Tex-Mex! I'm not a wine snob at all.

Re: Three-Buck-Chuck, our wine-tasting instructor said it is not from a particular winery and that's why the taste and quality varies so much--the manufacturer buys up wine from whomever he can get it from cheap. Our instructor also said it's basically a loss leader for the store--they are just breaking even on it, and hope you'll buy other stuff while you're in buying wine.

I like white merlots but can't find them all the time.

We tried a muscadine wine a couple of years ago that is made nearby, outside Ft. Smith Arkansas, and it is the only wine DH will drink. Post Familie's white Muscadine. They have a blush and a red as well, and I like the blush. I'm not too big on any reds.

From their website:
The muscadine grape vitus rotundifolia, is native to the Southeast United States. Some refer to it as Scuppernong, which is a variety of muscadine known to grow wild. All muscadines have an amazing taste and fragrance and a hardiness necessary to survive the hot and humid south. Folk tales and home recipes refer to muscadine jelly, juice and wine, and even muscadine pie. High in resveratrol and ellagic acid, muscadines are a source of many antioxidants, especially concentrated in the skin and seeds of the fruit.

I have to order it online though to get it. Every time I go to a liquor store and ask for muscadine wine they look at me clueless.

I love, love, love wine...mostly red, especially cabernet or shiraz/syrah. I do enjoy Reisling and some pinot grigio as well. Right now my favorite wine is the Coppola Claret. We also had a bottle of Silver Palms Shiraz a few weeks ago that was pretty delish, too. Le Snoot cabernet is decent, and I love the name!

I want to be a wine lover but I suck at picking good wines...

This thread should be good :thumbsup2

Has anyone been to a wine tasting seminar or had one of the wine flights at at a WDW table service restaurant?

We have done wine tastings on cruises. They were ok, nothing much learned. But one year we did a wine paring seminar and I could not believe how much the food you ate affected the flavor of the wine. Of course TJ's has some great wine tastings too!:thumbsup2

I love white wine, chard. Just about every kind. I even like the Franzia brand of Chardonnay Select, and great price! But I like a nice bottle for special occasions.

I love wine!

I love a nice red... I go mostly for shiraz, merlot, cabernet sauvignons. DH prefers chardonnays.

I'm with you- I generally keep a variety of around $10 bottles on hand. I'm having a glass of Barefoot Merlot now!

:thumbsup2 I prefer the reds myself. I LOVE the Barefoot Merlot (a bottle is chilling...slightly....right now;)) And to perpetuate my redneck WV status....I also enjoy the "Black Box" Cabernet sauvignon~it stays fresh "Forever":goodvibes Wine in a box...so I have something to throw up in when I'm done:lmao: Was that Larry the Cable guy???

Wine must be expensive in some areas of the country . . . Barefoot goes for under $10 for the big (1.5 liter) bottle around these parts. "Black Box" isn't your run of the mill box wine - it's more expensive than a lot of servicable bottles from reputable wineries.

We have been drinking "Double Dog Dare" recently - merlot, cab and chard for under $4 and a white zin for under $3.

OK - so I've finally found a "home" on the "dis"!!!! ;)

It's 7.00pm here in Sydney, Australia and I'm quietly "dising" while my DH watches the end of the Formula 1 race (run in Melbourne today); my son plays that "killing game" on X-box (might actually be playing againt some of your sons...); and my daughter is studying for 2 exams tomorrow. I'm sitting here with my laptop.

In front of me.... a glass of Taylors Eighty Acres Chardonnay Viognier 2007. Grapes grown in the Clare Valley, Australia; winner of the Silver Medal at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show 2007 and Silver Medal at the Japan Wine Challenge 2007 (best value under 2000 yen?). This cost AUD$14.00 today at the wine store.

I love the "blurb" on the label:

"Our family is pretty down-to-earth, in fact we love our soil. The famous red terra rossa soil on our Clare Valley estate vineyard makes it an exceptional place to grow grapes. It's why my grandfather Bill Taylor got his hands dirty planting the vines over 30 years ago on the traditional 80 acre blocks... This Chardonnay Viognier has juicy fresh tropical fruit flavours with a touch of apricot and spice... Cellaring potential 2-5 years"

I figure since it's 2009 I've bought it at just the right point for drinking!

It's interesting reading all of your reviews/opinions on wine because I CANNOT get ANY of them here. American wine is just not available here in Australia - but I know that you can probably get Australian wine

Next time you see an Australian one at the wine-shop/supermarket let me know and I'll let you know how much it costs here ;) I know that when we were doing our USA trip 2yrs ago we were shocked at the prices being charged for wines that we could buy here for under $10....

regards Jenn

Same thing happened to me. Right now I'm having a glass of Turning Leaf Pinot Grigio. I also like the Mirassou Pinot Noir.

For a good, inexpensive pinot, try Pinot Evil. It's around $10 per bottle. Very smooth drinking wine. I've also found it boxed.

I love sparkling wine. I will see if I can find this label.

I read some time ago that Charles Shaw (the Chuck of the two- or three-buck Chuck) was an actual winery but was bought up by a larger distributer.

I tend to prefer sweeter wines, although there arent a whole lot of wines in general I like (I'm picky).

Funny enough, there's a red they sell (or used to) at Animal Kingdom called "The Goats Do Roam" for like $12 that I loved!

Do any of your local liquor stores put offer a wine tasting? That is a great way to sample some wines that you might not normally try.

I agree--this is a great idea. Its a wonderful way to find out what types of wines you like/don't like without wasting $$ on the bottle.

Every Friday eve and Saturday afternoon, my favorite liquor store does this. 7-8 different wines, and a few samplings of liquor, beer. I found some great ones this way. Usually there is a discount on the ones they are offering. Sometimes they even give out free glasses, corkscrews, t-shirts.

I love whites, haven't been able to enjoy reds even though I've tried. Generally spend between $8 and $12 for everyday wines. Special occasions deserve Cakebread chardonney!

Jenn Dh loves Australian Wines - Our wine store often has wine tastings... Lindeman (sp?) wines are popular (in expensive - we were getting a 1.5 liter of Merlot for $5.99!) DH likes the Shiraz Penguin ($4.99 for the 750l)

Barefoot makes a nice Chardonnay Champagne! (about $5.99 on sale $7.99 I wait till it goes on sale!)

Thanks for the info on 3 buck chuck - that does sound familiar - Trader Joe's often has tastings too - if you like sweeter wines, they have a moscato wine (some are really sweet - some are just mildly sweet) that's good...
