DH and I are just starting to explore the world of wine and would love to hear your opinions.

I just bought a new ( to us) wine called " the Little Penguin"
(Ok I admit it, I love Penguins so thats why I bought the wine... its a sickness I know ;) but theyre just so dern cute!) Anyway, back to the wine questions.

What are your favourites? and why?

Do you tend to prefer a white wine or a red?

Tell me anything else you would like to about wine, I love to learn :)

I find one I like and tend to stick to it! I'm not a wine snob, I just like what I like and I can't afford the costly stuff.

My two favorites are Redwood Creek Merlot and Beringer's White Merlot.

I prefer pinks and reds!:p

I'm not a big fan of wine, but there's a local winery that makes this awesome wine called "Niagra". It is awesome. I drank almost 2 bottles of it a few weeks ago. What a headache I had the next day. lol

Some of my favorites are from a little winery in Napa called Frog's Leap. They make a wonderful Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. They give a quaint tour if you can get there.

I also like many wines from the Seghesio family winery (Sonoma Valley). Try their 1997 Omaggio (if you can find it and feel like shelling out some bucks). This is a wonderful red, and I wish I had bought more than one bottle when I could get my hands on it! They also have a great Pinot Grigio and Zinfandel.

I used to belong to a wine club, and I found many great wines from them. I drink both white and red, although Chardonney is the only white I don't like. If you're looking for cheap every-day white wine for dinner, try Dry Creek's Fume Blanc (pretty light) or if you want your wine a bit more dry, their Chenin Blanc. You can get these for $8.99.

Cabernets and Merlots are popular, but I like my reds a bit lighter, like Pinot Noirs and Syrahs.

I had a friend pawn off a bottle of "3-buck Chuck" on me. This got a decent review from Consumer Reports, and she wanted my opinion. My opinion was it was not be enjoyed without food and had a crummy after taste. But that's just me...

When I come to America I'm always suprised at how expensive domestic wine is. I can buy American (Californian) wine in my local supermarket in London cheaper than it's for sale in the USA. IMHO you're overcharged by about 40% in the supermarkets and 60% in restaurants. There also seems a bias towards French wine on the imported parts of wine lists. IMHO French wine is overpriced anywhere in the world anyway and this is exagerated in America.

For white wines my favourites are Sauvignon blanc wines from New Zealand ( Cloudy Bay is the best of these) and Chardonnay's from South africa and Australia.

For reds I like Riojas from Spain, cabernet Sauvignons from Chile, most of the Chianti family of Italian wines and my favourites are Barolo and Amerone (very heavy reds) from Italy.

There are some very good American wines available, but I think there are better non-American wines available at a cheaper price.

Rosemount-Shiraz, a good Australian Red.

I will go to teh local wine merchant.
They will offer a wide selection of wines in varying prices, and vineyards.

Many will also have tasting nights, where you can sample dozens of wines for a nominal fee.

But remember "in vino veritas" ;)

I really like this wine called Fat Bas*a**..Yep that is the name! It is a white wine, my husband brought it home as a joke and we were shocked to find out it was really good! So now where ever we go we bring it! Most of my friends are hooked.
I also like Luna Deluna. Again bought it for the pretty blue bottle and funny name...very good wine IMHOP!

"I'll have a glass of Fat Bas*a** please". heheheh

I'm really cheap...Turning Leaf Chardonay is fine with me.

LIke white wines better then red wines...have really become hooked on Italian wines.

not a big fan of chard, i usually like Pinot Grigio. But my favorite wine is Cake Bread Chardonnay.

I stick to red wine. White wine gives me a headache for some reason. It's usually the other way around but I tend to be backwards. :hyper:

Some of my favorites are Smoking Loon Merlot (CA), South African wines like Indaba Merlot, Nederburg Pinotage, Goats Do Roam. Papio Merlot or Cab when I'm acting cheap. Have been looking for another really good Zin but have been disappointed in them lately.

Cakebread Cellars' Napa Valley Chardonnay!!!!

Awesome!!! ::yes::

The ONLY time we drink wine is with dinner and depending on what we serve, depends on the type of wine we buy. Cake Bread is my fiance's favorate, I like Sabastiani Merlot and Cabernet, and when the parents come we tend to go a bit cheaper but still as good, Kendall Jackson Merlot. There are also some wonderful wines we found at the Biltmore House in Asheville years ago and I intend to make a pass there in a few months to choose some new ones.

::yes:: and I also like Hop Kiln too..

I have a bottle of Fat ******* Chardonnay here but haven't tried it - it's a conversation piece. :teeth:

I like red wine better than white, but it does give me headaches. I usually stick to blushes. My brother in Pennsylvania sent me a bottle of Steuben from CT Miller vineyards, which is a light, sweet red and it was very good. (And no headache followed.) It's a small winery but they have a good selection.
