Wine and Dine 2015

Can't believe we will be there a week from now!!!
SUPER DUPER EXCITED!!!!!!

Ok, so I am a solo runner but traveling with family. My normal routine is to get DH to drop me off at 4:00 am before a morning Disney race. I am always solo so it leaves me enough time to kind of get my bag checked and then they start calling for corrals. So for all of you that have done the night race, what is the latest I can arrive before heading to the corrals for Wine and Dine.

Who's running the half solo? I am solo in corral E... anyone else?
I run most of my races solo, but my last 2 W&D's have been with my oldest daughter, who cannot run it this year (college volleyball interferes). It will be weird not having her on the course with me.

I want to say last year we left YC/BC at around 8ish and had plenty of time to drop bags and sit (in the rain ;-))

Running solo in Corral E, though I may have a couple friends move back from D. Fiancee will be at the after party too. But happy to say hi to fellow DISers!

I'm running another Disney race solo and due to soccer the family can't come for the after party this year. As for waiting in the corrals, I am one of those people who would rather get there early than arrive too late. For the ToT races I have gotten on a bus just after 8 and had plenty of time. For W&D last year we got on a bus around 7:30, had time to do bag drop, then wait in the long porta-potty line and Mickey picture line, still had at least 15 minutes to get to my corral and wait for the start. I was in B, so I know my DW had much more time since she was in a later corral.

I'm wondering this- but even worse- what if you're running Princess AND Tink after? at that point should I just keep cycling between reverse tapers? For me, my body holds endurance well. I won't lie; I could not run for 3 weeks and still go out and run about 8-10 miles first time back with minimal time loss and little to no endurance loss (ie my body will go at least that far without going '***, why are we doing this?') so I don't know that running 3x a week will be as important as maybe just making sure I get a long run in there? I'm just also trying to be realistic and worry about training burnout; which I'm ALREADY at. Trying to keep this training mentality up for the next 5 or so months? that's going to be the real endurance challenge :rotfl:

So to piggyback on my above question, but also on your advice- would you say the same for my situation? To not focus on speed until after Tink?
Burnout? I've been burnt-out since July. I did a short speed season before jumping back into the fire.

You've stumped me a bit, because I'm big fan of downtime between training cycles. In other words, find another cross-training sport like rowing, cycling, swimming, snowshoeing, kayaking, for a few weeks after the season. I plan some indoor rowing after W&D, maybe even go to a few indoor regattas in February. Shh, I've been sneaking on the erg for 10-15 minutes twice a week.

I would expect you to be quite burnt out by the end of Tink. I would drop back and do a bare minimum mileage to get to Princess and try to squeeze it into the Tink training plan. My minimum would still be three runs a week, sorry.

I personally can't do that kind of volume month after month if I am racing any of them. I have an ability to eat pain, get into the zone, during a race. I wouldn't hear, "There's a sinkhole ahead." I would run right into it. Those "A" races leave me drained.

As for speed, I include it as part of my 1/2 marathon build-up. I have found that if I don't train at the 5k and 10k pace I get good at running long, slowly. If you are new to running like couch to 1/2 marathon it's a tough row to hoe. My advice to new runners was to spend some time getting good at 5k's. It's very difficult to handle building up to 14 X 800 meters at 10k pace and get all the long runs in. A much better plan is to spend a season playing with 5k's and 10k's, getting the body really strong, with plenty of hills, core work, weights and 10k pace intervals. This isn't a dig, because doing nothing is a lot worse than jumping right into the 1/2 marathon. ;)

To you aficionados I'm trying to figure some things out..How many corrals total? And what is the cut off 3.5 hours?
Just asking, ......

12 Corrals, plus the Elite group. The sweep time is 3.5 hours (16 min/mile pace) from the time the last participant crosses the start line. Though there are hard sweep locations along the course.

Just to make sure, can't tell if you are on the normal routine. You have to arrive at WWoS via Disney Event Transportation, departing either EPCOT parking or a host hotel. There are no drop offs at WWoS, the start location. If you aren't at a host resort, and you plan to have your husband drop you off, it would be at EPCOT parking so you can get on a bus by 8:00 PM. I wasn't sure if you knew about the idiosyncrasies of the W&D starting at the Wide World of Sports.

"THERE WILL BE NO PARKING AND NO GUEST DROP-OFF AT ESPN WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS COMPLEX ON RACE EVENING." From Official Program, They seem serious...it's all caps;)

Just a couple of questions for the group. I am staying at the Swan, so for race transport would it be better to walk to the Boardwalk or Yacht Club? Will Event buses be at the regular bus stop locations?

We hope to be on the first bus from POP. We are only doing the 5K, but we really want to take advantage of our first Expo and all it has to offer. Plus I really want to get the 'I Did It' 5K shirt so that I can have even more motivation to be able to finish the race. It seems silly that I am worried about finishing the 5K and you all are running almost 3X what I am...

Little story, with fair warning. My first race ever was the JJ5k. I was a horrible runner and had only run like 1.5 miles before that. I finished, slow and exhausted and confident I would never run further than a 5k. But I bought a 1/2 marathon wine glass initially to "remember the weekend" since there was not a lot of 5k merchandise options at the time (read: none). But, every time I used that glass I kept remembering seeing the half runners, until I knew I had to figure out how to run so I could run this race...and now I have done like 5 disney races and am already signed up for 3 more. Don't ever discount yourself for "just" a 5k :)

I echo everything said. There are a wonderful and supportive group of friends in here. It seems like most are in the same corral. The " H corral party group" party: might have to move to join you.

I am with a group of friends but am the only one run/walking. After last weekends Cocoa Beach Half my only goal is to finish. Still a little sore from that one. I would come back and join you too as others had said.

Hard sweeps will probably Mile 3/6 which is in the AK parking lot, Mile 2/7 which is Osceola Parkway and somewhere between 11 and 12. I believe the 11/12 sweep is in the Hollywood Studios parking lot but just past Boardwalk there are bike pacers who will flag if you are behind. These hard sweeps will not go into effect until the balloon ladies pass them.

Hey guys! I second the opinion that everyone on here is so friendly and helpful and supportive. Part of why I love running Disney is the DIS running community! :thumbsup2

I've been dealing with peak-to-taper madness... I think. I've been truly exhausted this week, along with having jumpy legs and arms. And I'm starving. I think this happened to me at the end of Wine & dine training in 2012 and 2013 too. I do confess I had a bit more Halloween candy this week than I should have which also causes me to have blood sugar crashes, so I'm trying to clean up my act for the next week. But man, I'm tired. I'm even thinking about skipping my run this weekend or at the very least, bringing it down from the planned 5 to 3. I've been super good about sticking to my plan this year, so perhaps I'm a bit more burnt out than usual. Plus I think every time I sneeze that I'm getting sick. I literally yelled at DS and DH this morning because they woke me up with their noisiness 45 minutes earlier than I wanted to and I said, "don't you people know I have a race in 8 days!?!?! I need my sleep!" I think they will be happy when crazy running mommy is on her plane... :confused3

Tonight - laundry
Tomorrow - packing
THEN I will be able to relax and really get excited and look forward to things. Right now I'm just a big ball of nervous energy about everything :hyper: :hyper::hyper: - the race, forgetting to pack something, finalizing our transportation - just booked the rental car!, work, childcare arrangements, halloween, the weather, the time change, DS's tooth that just won't fall out, and a variety of other deadlines I have to meet before Thursday!

Ok, time to practice that yoga breathing so espoused a few pages back. (FWIW I also love the p90x yoga video. And it TOO is one of the first parts of my training to go when I run out of time but it shouldn't be because it does help.)

A word of caution. Don't be like me in 2012 (my first half, the w&d). I saw those bike pacers in the backlot of epcot (just after beach club) and totally utterly freaked out. Even though at that point, I was only on the course for 2 hours and 40 minutes, had nearly an hour of time to finish the last mile and there were THOUSANDS of people behind me. I panicked and started sprinting. Only to completely fizzle out by the time I made it to Spaceship Earth. In retrospect, it was hilarious. But at the time I was like "OMG those guys are going to sweep me! Must run like MEB!!!!":rotfl2:

I did that my first race because the bikes were at ESPN. I freaked and started hauling butt. A biker at the other exit of ESPN said your fine look at everyone behind you haha.

Getting super excited!

As many of us are prepping for our last long run before the race, I want to share one piece of advice that someone much more informed gave me when I was prepping for my first half marathon.

There is very little you can do in the last weekend to dramatically improve your performance, but it is very easy to hurt your performance. In other words, take it easy! Let your body heal and get into peak condition. Trust your training. And above all, have fun!

Good luck to all everyone especially you first timers! You picked a great race for your first. I have run every one of them and it is by far my favorite.

I ran last year (my first half), and as I was on the road going out of AK, I passed the balloon ladies on the other side of the road going into AK. I was so excited to see them because I read a bunch of blogs about various runners who were swept or just avoiding being swept. I found their stories so inspiring; they were the ones that got me to enter the race, a distance I never thought I could finish.

Anyway, I squealed with delight that I actually got to see them, pointing them out to my husband. Almost everyone around me started running faster, until they saw they were on the other side. Sorry to anyone I startled, but I really was moved by those women about whom I read, so it was kind of cool to see the balloon ladies and remember the struggles of others that inspired me to try.
