Wine and Dine 2015

My husband might actually not spend money at the expo now. He isn't too excited for the stuff for men. I'm not running the half so I'm going to pass on getting the cute tank top.

I'm kind of disappointed that none of the shirts/sweatshirts seem to have the race map on the back. I was hoping for one with that. :(

Yep. Now the Dr.Cool stuff...that's my demographic. Well, maybe the sweat band. I could soak it in ice water and use it to treat "taper madness."

Ugh...my training for this race just seems cursed. My last long run was 2 weeks ago (10 miles) and I ended up getting sick this past weekend so couldn't get in the 8 miles I had planned or my short run yesterday. Turns out I have a UTI, and I was just prescribed a 3-day course of Cipro, which carries a possible risk of tendinitis/tendon rupture. Since I already have some (minor) tendon issues, I think I'm going to play it safe and not run at all until after I complete the antibiotics. That leaves me looking at a long run this weekend. I was planning on doing 12-13 (my last 13-mile run was a trail half on September 26th), but I'm wondering if maybe that's a bad idea since it will have been over a week between runs. Would it be a ridiculously bad idea to do 10 miles this week and 12 the following week (i.e. 12 mile long run the week before the race)? Or should I just chance it and go for 12 this week?

I wouldn't push it. Not this close to the race. If you've done a 10-miler you will likely be fine to finish the race although maybe not as strong as you like. Quoting Coach Charles, "It's better to be undertrained and healthy than fully trained and injured."

Sorry you got sick though. I'm totally in my paranoid period right now where I assume every sniffle is the flu and every ache or pain a pending injury.

Well, we shall see how this goes. Training for Goofy really burned me out in terms of running and to say I haven't been doing much is an understatement. I've been doing Taekwondo 5-6 days a week since June, and we do some running in there, but nothing like the mileage required for a regular training plan. And listening to a podcast I get last night where they were talking about race nutrition, I realized that I haven't thought AT ALL about that. Oops!

I'd been thinking that being a New Yorker I am ALWAYS walking and between that and the TKD conditioning I should at least be able to walk it, but now with that realization that I've hardly thought about it at all beyond just "could I go the distance" (which I know I could do...slower than I've done one before but)... I'm obviously still coming down, and I'll get my stuff at the Expo. But now I'm thinking I may just play at the party - or play it by ear and see how I'm feeling about it the day of.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. It didn't even occur to me to mention anything about running/exercise when I was at urgent care. I had known about the risks I would have asked for a different antibiotic. I have an e-mail in to my primary care doc asking if he can switch me to something else and exactly how concerned I should be about this. And of course my new running shoes arrived last night and I'm itching to try them out.

I'm totally with you on the paranoia. Hopefully this infection will fill my "quota" and I'll be good to go for the race. Had my flu shot 2 weeks ago to cross at least one possibility off the list...

Going to go off topic for just a tiny minute and say that my son is safely back in the US after his deployment!! One happy mama. :)

Okay, back to official W&D stuff. :)

That's awesome! I can only imagine as a mom how wonderful this is! We also thank him for his service and you as well, we know family support is a beautiful service to our country as well!

Getting sick is my biggest fear right now. It's going to be hard the last week to not lock myself in my room for fear of contamination!
As far as merchandise goes, I'm hoping for the tank top, head bands and a magnet. I'm worried they won't have enough tanks, sounds like a popular item. Anyone know how well they do with having plenty of each size or if a certain size tends to sell out faster? I'm pretty sure I would need a small. Our flight gets in around 1:00 on Friday but we have to take DME to SSR and then get a bus to expo. Thinking it will be around 4:00 before we get there.

Aw, DON'T give up! You can do it! It's ok if you are slower than you want to be, it sounds like you have the conditioning-- go for it!! :drinking:

Who needs inflamed or torn tendons, or worse no caffeine i.e. no chocolate or coffee, while on Cipro? Find something else. I take probiotics and double up on plain yogurt with active cultures while on antibiotics, and drink plenty of water too. Hopefully you can get through this fast. I'm off to get some cranberry juice.

So about 10 pages back, cyndiloveswalt posted the question about why we run and I love, love reading about everyone's running journeys/reasons.
I'll share mine: I started out hating to run! My DH and DS20 have run for many years. Six years ago my family started a team for a charity for the WDW Marathon Weekend (Run For Our Sons/Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy) for my nephew who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. We've done it every year since and have done others as well (DL, Avenger's). It's really hard to be around all the fun energy and not want to be a part of it, so a friend and I decided to start with 5ks, then 10ks, and 1/2 marathons. Disney races are pretty addicting as you all may well know. :love:We've done a lot of the races and my goal is to do all of them eventually. :rolleyes1 Now my whole family runs, this January, DS20 is running Dopey, DD18 is running the 1/2 and DD13 is running the 10k. About a year ago I had to put everything on hold while I recovered from major emergency surgery. I was so sick and not even able to walk around the block. Since then, I've done a few 5 and 10ks, but this is my "come back" 1/2. (Ugh, I've trained so hard, almost too hard, DS thinks I have runner's knee, so I don't care if I have to drag myself across the finish line...) As my kids say, I'm slow af (their words, lol) but I totally can go the distance. (And so excited to start in Corral I, I'll take it!)
Like I said, my nephew has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, my mom passed away from Parkinson's Disease, my way too young brother has Atypical Parkinsonism, and I am a part time caretaker for a friend who has ALS. It's almost surreal for me that so many I love are robbed of their ability to even walk. Their amazing courage has inspired me to run...because I can... I know it's kinda cheesy but true and pretty inspirational in my life. Also for me, it's a great part of my life for staying healthy, both physically and mentally. Eventually, I aspire to be one of the little older ladies that whiz by everyone on the race course and make everyone smile and say "what the heck~ if she can do it, I can too!" :flower3:

Also~ @Ariel484~ the "Richard Simmons" you have in your Osborne Lights pic earlier in the thread is a Run For Our Sons runner and he is a hoot! He runs so many of the races and cheers EVERYONE on! So much fun!

GAH apparently I didnt send in a Proof of Time - and now I'm in the last corral. HELP!?!?~!?!

RogueKnits - Oh i feel your pain! Last week i felt like I might be getting a UTI and I TOTALLY panicked. I must have had 45 oz of cranberry juice that afternoon and was ready to call the Doc in the am. Fortunately it must not have been because I felt fine the next day but what a horrid feeling. I hope that you manage to get the doc to give you different antibiotics, but here's a another option you might consider. It's not for everyone because it's getting darker early and work schedules might not allow but I once ended up pushing my last long run from a weekend 2 weeks before the race, to mid-week 1 1/2 weeks before the race. So if you are given the all clear to start running again on Sunday, you could do your long run maybe next thursday and still have 8-9 days of a taper. In the meantime, if you take it EASY, I would also suggest maybe some walking in such a way that would not hurt your tendons (i.e. no major hills or speed walking). Mileage is mileage in my book, when you're dealing with mitigating circumstances.

On another note, I am fighting the beginnings of a cold with all of my might! Ok, well, I'm doing a lot of hand washing and taking of Cold-eze and wishing it away. I could be doing better at getting extra sleep but life is hectic. I HATE taper madness. I get totally panicked about every sneeze or cough.

I wish they just sold the I DID IT stuff at the finish line. I do not like the bad mojo of buying something that says I completed an activity before I actually completed it.

I guess the big issue with having merchandise be by bib only would be that many of the ebayers who make a ton of money off of runDisney would just buy up the 5K bibs just to be able to go get official merch.

I agree. I feel like I'd jinx myself. I've been through a few bigger injuries and might end up power walking a 16 min mile with the balloon ladies eyeing me so I need all the good mojo I can get!

So since they give us the gift card for the after-party, does that mean that there is no food (bananas, etc.) at the finish line? Or is there still some nutrition there and then you can make your way back into Epcot to visit the F&W booths for additional snacks?
