I was having a conversation with two friends today and both said they love this time of the year since they can leave their windows open. Both live in ranch homes and both leave them open at night. Their kids are older (11 to 15 years in age).

Am I the only one that would not be able to sleep at night knowing that my kids were in their bedroom with the window open? Maybe I watch too much Law & Order SVU. :confused3

I always try to convince DD to open her window at night when its hot. She doesn't. It gets so hot in her room, especially since our two dogs sleep in there with her. They are good protectors so I dont worry about her sleeping with the window open. She does though. I go in when its super hot and open it while shes asleep. Then I go to sleep.

I have my windows open now... but they'll be closed when we turn on the AC. Sometimes I've thought about leaving them open then as we have a window unit and it takes FOREVER (read: late at night) to cool off my bedroom. It gets SO HOT in here.

If I had regular windows I'd be really nervous to sleep with them open.

I'm really lucky I live in this great old duplex built in the 30's. The house has these really cool panels that run along the lower 2 1/2 feet of the walls. The panels pop out and behind them they've got screens. On the outside there are metal shutters - so no one can crawl through nor can you see into the house. Plus at the top of the wall there are 1 ft transom windows.

I've been trying to keep my electric costs down so I'm trying to take advantage of the cooler evening. I'll pop out several of these panels, open a couple of the transom windows and we're nice and cool all night.

I have a total window phobia. We have a two story but I wont let my kids open their windows, one does but I tell her not to. My aunt fell through a screen of a 2 story when she was little. My youngest is 10 and I still can't shake that fear.
Never mind worrynng about kidnappers and burglers.

I haven't been able to sleep with windows open in my house since I first saw an episode of Dark Shadows when I was a kid.

LOL! Well just keep in mind that if Barnabas Collins wanted to he could go through a closed window so keeping them closed is really useless.

I have clips on my window frames that you can pull out and then the window can only be opened about 2 inches. That is the only way I would sleep with windows open.

Our first house was a ranch and I drove my husband crazy each night worrying about our kids sleeping in their rooms with their windows open. We've since moved from NY to NH and I made sure to buy a two story house with no children's bedrooms on the first floor. Now we are thinking about moving to a larger house and it's again one of my specifications, but my husband still thinks I'm crazy.

Never gave it a second thought. We have always lived in areas where it is safe to keep our windows open at night--heck most people don't even lock their doors even.

At night we close all the downstairs windows and leave open the upstairs windows. Our windows are all double hung so we open them from the top. DD doesn't like to sleep with her window open and it makes me nuts because her room gets so hot and she won't turn on the ceiling fan.

We have a ranch and leave our windows open. Heck we've even gone to bed and forgot to lock the doors.

We're in a ranch also...I leave the windows on the back of the house open since we have a tall wooden privacy fence up with locked gates. We also have two pretty big Chesapeake Bay Retrievers that wouldn't be happy to have their sleep disturbed by an intruder :rotfl2:

Only time we slept with the windows open was after the hurricanes until we could get power back on. Needlesss to say, I didn't sleep a wink. I was worried sick. I can't go to sleep at night until I make my rounds, checking all windows and doors. We've got an alarm system, and we've got a very loud dog, but I'm not willing to just leave an open entry to my house and my family overnight.

Since moving in to our new house, I don't leave the windows open. Everything is on the lst. floor except my DS bedroom, I will leave his window open at night. I will not leave the windows open on the lst. floor at night. My DH thinks I am nuts!

But I miss sleeping with the windows open, in our old house the bedrooms were on the 2nd. floor, even in the winter I would always leave the windo open a crack.

I do not sleep with my windows open.

1. Except on the very hottest of nights, I always get cold at night with the windows closed. If I am cold, I cannot sleep.

2. A coworker of mine who kept her windows open at night was raped by a guy who cut thru her bedroom screen and got in.

3. I had to read 10 years worth of county criminal case files for a work project. I KNOW there are predators out there who spend their free time casing 'nice' neighborhoods looking for people who don't lock their doors and leave their windows open at night. They will case an entire neighorhood and CHOOSE their victims based upon their accessibility. The folks with locked doors and windows are discarded as possible options as being too hard when the perps know there are folks who keep their house openings unlocked. Why bother working so hard? These subhumans spend a lot of time fantazing and planning their crime in order to perfect it. They keep 'rape kits' in their cars waiting for 'their' night. So, IMO, you are taking a calculated risk by keeping your windows open at night. Not a risk I choose to take.
