Windows open at night?

all of our windows are open when the weather is nice.....no matter if we are awake or asleep.

I thought it was just me. We live in a ranch and my kids windows are in the front of the house. I just wouldn't sleep well with them open. I do sleep with the window in our bedroom open but it's right behind our bed so I feel pretty safe with that.

I don't leave the windows open at night but it's due to my allergies as opposed to safety concerns. If the windows are open at night, my eyes are swollen shut in the morning.

When I lived in New Mexico, I did leave the windows open and we had a ranch style house. With a swamp cooler, you have to leave your windows at least slightly open or there is too much pressure inside the house. It didn't bother me at all--of course, we had a huge german shepherd/malanois mix as our family pet and no one was getting past her--she slept inside with us. Not to mention, my ex was a K9 cop and part of the time I had his enormous dog in the back yard, as well.

All of our bedrooms are on the second floor. Right now I'm loving leaving my window open at night. :goodvibes I know it won't last long before it is too hot and the air conditioning is on instead.

However, I will only leave my window open when my husband is home and I won't leave the windows open in my kids' rooms. It just makes me too nervous.

When we had a 2 story house we would have the bedroom windows open at night. Even in the winter. I love it.

Now we live in a very safe area for where we live but in general it's a higher crime area. S. Florida is very high crime. I do open the windows in the daytime in the winter but our bedroom only has a slider so no fresh air in there.

We are moving and our new apartment has two very high windows in the master (vaulted ceiling) above the regular windows. I can't wait to have those open in the winter time. The only time I would keep the windows open now would be if I can find a reliable 'lock' that would allow the window to only open a few inches and I wouldn't do it in DS room at night, just ours. I wonder if a good stick would work!! :-)

I have my windows open on the 2nd floor. My DD does not because her room is in the back of the house. She's too scared of someone climbing in. I figure that no one would try to climb in the front of the house, where my bedroom is, so I keep them open. All the windows are closed downstairs though.

I am with you! I won't leave a window open unless its 2nd story!

Ditto. I have this issue with my DH and kids all the time, who think nothing of it. At the very least, I think all the bedroom doors should then remain open so that our ferocious ;) German Shepherd can get in if necessary. It's not at all a high crime area, but we are out in the boonies, and no one else would hear a thing. Not that I'm paranoid or anything...just safety conscious.

Love, love, love sleeping with the windows open. I dread when it gets too hot and we need to close them. I just sleep so much better with them open.

I leave our second story window open if the room gets too hot. I can't open ANY of my first story windows simply because we live on a dirt road and the dust that accumulates from passing cars would be nightmarish (though they are actually paving it RIGHT NOW!!).

There appear to be a whole lot of statistics-waiting-to-happen on this thread. Nobody lives in a "safe" or crime insulated area. It can and does happen anywhere and everywhere. heck I lock my door when I am HOME.

All bedrooms are on the first floor, windows are always open duringt he day when it;s nice out, but at night they get closed and locked, especially the kids.
I will leave one of my bedroom windows open because there is a bush that grows right up to the outside wall to about 1 foot below that window-it's prickly and poke-y and wide and long so there is no way anyone could get up to our window without a chainsaw to clear the way.;)
Plus we have a big dog...
When our bedrooms were on the 2nd floor, we often slept with our windows open.

ETA: one time I woke up in the morning and realized we had left our front door WIDE open all night long. Ack!

All our windows are open -- we live in a split foyer house -- so they are only about 1/2 floor up off the ground. Our windows are open as soon as the weather permits.

Just like one of the other posters said, a lot of times I wake up in the morning to find out that the doors never got locked the night before.

As far as somebody coming into the house because the windows are open, if they really want to get into the house, they will get in the house. No use worrying about that.

my friend has bears where she lives - just today she was saying how they can no longer leave windows open (with screens).....

While your last line is true, if someone is targeting you or your house they will find a way in, remember that most burglaries/robberies are crimes of opportunity and most "actors" will take the path of least resistance. An open window is an invitation.

I'm in a second floor apartment, so I sleep with the windows open sometimes. I'm not worried about crime, but occassionally, I worry "is the weather report going to be wrong? Are we going to get rain tonight?" I've woken up a couple times with a drenched windowsill.

I don't know whether or not I'd keep the windows open if the apartment was on the first floor.

We live in a ranch and only a couple of windows can stay open at night. In our bedroom and DD's we have a long window that cranks out and is high on the wall. I will leave them open a little. My DD also has a bay window in her room. The 2 side windows are narrow so I could leave them open. I tried sticking my head through them and my living room bay window today. I doubt my 3 year old could really fit but I still won't leave those open at night. Some of the windows in our basement are big. I want to get bars on them, Dh thinks I'm nuts. We have central air so when it is hot, we won't suffocate at night. Glas Im not the only window phobic person.

I close my windows at night and even lock my bedroom door! Can you tell I don't feel too safe here? :confused3 :rotfl2: I'm also a newly out of college, living on my own 24 year old, and I feel better that way. I wake up pretty easily, and I figure if someone does come in that gives me a few more seconds to call the cops...

Yeah, I want to move out of this area...

Windows wide open.. ranch house.

DH told me once.. that if he ever dies.. PLEASE remember to lock the doors at night.

Apparently I forget to do that.. I feel absolutely safe here. We're planning on moving to the country in a year.. I will feel safe there as well. I can't imagine living somewhere that I would be afraid to sleep with my windows open.

I do not sleep with the windows open because it wreaks havoc with my allergies. No other reason...

We have a ranch and leave our windows open. Heck we've even gone to bed and forgot to lock the doors.

Love, love, love sleeping with the windows open. I dread when it gets too hot and we need to clothes them. I just sleep so much better with them open.

That would be me too! Can't even imagine never sleeping with the windows open.
