Wilma - Will Orlando feel the winds or rain?

Maybe an experienced Floridian can answer this question - maybe I'm just asking too much. Being from the North have never gone through a hurricane.

IF Wilma comes on shore say in Naples - do you think there will be rain and wind in Orlando ?? Just hoping we might escape this thing without rain but, oh well, at least we're at Disney :Pinkbounc

In all likelihood, the minimum you can expect is rain. I seriously doubt that Wilma tracks so far south that Orlando escapes the outer bands of moisture.

I would also expect decent wind gusts. We were down there in late August, right around the time Katrina was making its way through the gulf. There was a good day or so of wind (although sunny, because Katrina was well out in the gulf) even with the distance from the storm.

Not to sound negative...I'm down in South Florida and we're already getting rain and Wilma is still in Mexico. This is a large storm. The track has it going across Florida in a NE direction. I'd say Orlando might even get tropical storm force winds and definately rain. But, then again, everyone who lives in the path becomes an expert, you're bombarded with information 24/7, so who knows.

At the minimum we will get on and off heavy rain and wind.

Okay, it is now 4:22 pm on 10/22 and from the latest news, my best guess is that we will only get some rain. She seems to be weakening, and if she is only a cat 2, then by the time the winds hit Orlando, they will be just that, just some wind, not gale force.

I lived through last years and Camille in N.O. in 1969.

We were in Disney in July during Hurricane Dennis. It never hit Orlando, but I can tell you what we experienced. On the day it was heading north in the gulf and we were feeling the effects we had some heavy downpours on Saturday night. We were going to Church at 6 and I remember wondering if we should go. Other than the heavy rain we were fine that night. The next day was a non park day for us and we had a lot of wind. When we were in our room you wouldn't have even known there was anything going on, but outside things were really blowing. i remember eating lunch in the Pepper Market and watching the trees in the courtyard sway back and forth. By Sunday night all was calm and it was past us.

I'm here now and the farthest bands of the storm are here now. I don't know if it's the effect of Wilma or not, but we are having a torrential down pour. Our biggest concern is whether or not it will affect our flight out on Monday night at 8:20. We're hoping for the best. Need some pixie dust for the rest of our trip. When I booked this vacation last January, I never thought a hurricane would happen this late in oct!

Hi ncbyrne -
I know what you mean. We PURPOSELY scheduled this late so there wouldn't be any hurricanes !!! UGGGG We don't fly in until tomorrow afternoon so at this point I'm still hoping that we'll get in. Have you heard anything of them closing the park on Monday ??? I've bought 5 day passes and it now looks like I'll only use 3 days if it's raining so hard.

Happy we're goin but this is probably the only trip we'll be able to take for a very long time and just wish it would have turned out a bit nicer.

Thanks for the info --
Jackie

I just saw on ESPN that the Funai Classic Golf Championship at WDW has been cancelled for today becasue of weather.

Also the weather channel is reporting that Tropical Strom Alpha has formed south of Puerto Rico so here comes another one!

Alpha is not expected to have any effect on the US, it will primarily aim towards Hispanola.

:umbrella: It has been a cloudy, humid day here in Sarasota Florida. I spent the day out at Lido Beach and had no showers but experienced WAVES in the Gulf! They are predicting that things will go downhill starting tomorrow---wind and rain and Wilma should be arriving early Monday morning. Looks like Orlando will have some rain and wind also.
Hoping that Wilma is real tired by the time she visits Florida---not that we don't like visitors but ---WILMA -- :wave2: GO AWAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

FLORIDA PRINCESS I love love love LIDO BEACH!!!! we go there every year for a couple of days!!! but WAVES NO WAY!!!!! I just cannot believe that one!!! That is one of teh reasons we love goin there the kids can go out in teh water and enjoy with out big waves and undertow pulling on tehm ,like here..... Hope you have a great next 2 days.....

just an update or an FYI.. it takes ALOT to close schools in our area and we just got word we will be closed monday.. to teh person worried about getting home monday.. if you have to be somewhere Tuesday then i would try to get home sunday just in case...

I'm at wdw right now. This afternoon we just finished a thunderstorm of about an hour and a half. It's been cloudy all day. We have been here all week, and each day since Wed it was supposed to be a rain out but the storm has slowed down and we are just starting to catch a little of it. The latest local weather is for Monday morning, no current changes to park schedules, and no airport impact expected on Sunday. Once it does go through on Monday the next few days look great, sunny Tues and Wed and considerably cooler. That will be nice, this week has been very warm. :umbrella:

Thanks for the update Snowmouse - we're hoping for the best !! Guess at the very least, maybe it'll chase the crowds away a little !!!

thats for sure about the crowds! last night at MNSSHP it was almost EMPTY!!! walk on all rides no lines anywhere and really no crowds at all......

I think some people cancelled there plans for comming in at the end of this week because the hurricane was suppose to hit Florida today not Monday.

I wish I had my camera to snap a few pictures of the WAVES for you! The public beach was VERY crowded with surfers----but further down by the Ritz it was beautiful-----really different hearing and seeing the waves ! Really reminded me of the Atlantic not the Gulf.
We are now waiting for our Ft. Myers family to arrive---didn't want to wait any longer to leave their home.
Hoping for the best during the next few days----even after all this --I still LOVE living in Florida !!!!!!!!!!

FRom what I just heard, Orlando is supposed to get 50 mph winds, and lots of rain..so maybe the parks will close.( Monday) But it is only suppsoed to last a maximum of 6 hrs or so, beginning in the morning.

Monday: Very windy with rain, heavy at times. High 71F. Winds NNE at 40 to 60 mph. Significant rainfall amounts possible. Winds could occasionally gust to hurricane force.

This is the monday forcast for Orlando..Im thinking the parks will close..makes sense to me!

Also, Orange County and the area, where wdw is, will be under a hurricane watch so yes, Ill bet the parks will close. And you will be effected if you are there so take precautions.
