Will you get the swine flu vaccine for you and/or your family?

No. Never got a flu shot so why should I get a swine flu shot?

And after hearing about the issues with the last one from the early-mid 70s, HECK NO!

That is why I'm not getting it. My mom was one of the people forced to get the shot in the 70's because she was a freshman in college. Within a week people she knew were dead because of that shot.

None of us are in the mood to test this one out. Most of the doctors I have talked to (and I work in a hospital so I talk to a lot of them) don't recommend the shot and say the best thing we can do is make sure we wash our hands often.

My niece is in the hospital. The doctors think it may be because of a vaccine she received a few weeks ago. She has ADEM-Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). It is a neurological disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord caused by damage to the myelin sheath. The myelin sheath is the fatty covering, which acts as an insulator, on nerve fibers in the brain. ADEM may occur in association with a viral or bacterial infection, as a complication of inoculation or vaccination, or without a preceding cause.

Her left arm is paralyzed, her left leg is very weak. She can't smile because the left side of her face is paralyzed too. She has had all of her innoculations and never had a problem until now-she's 16 years old. At first the doctors thought she had a stroke. She's gone from ICU to a regular room and back again. This was the happiest kid you ever saw. Her personality has undergone changes too-she's no longer happy. It breaks my heart.

So, no we will not get the vaccine. I have a 15 year old daughter and I never want to see her live with what her cousin is going through.
I'm sorry about your niece.

Do you mind sharing which vaccine she received?

How horrible, I am so sorry for your niece. She will be in my prayers. This whole swine flu thing is scary all the way around. I

Nope. I don't do needles. Seriously, I have no immune compromises so I will save the vaccne for those who need it.

Absolutely not. I have never received a flu vaccine, and I hadn't had the flu in almost 20 years. I get plenty of other ailments mind you , just not the flu! I don't believe in overmedicating for every little thing. For those who need it, that's fine for them - but I don't want it for me.

Funny thing is, most ailments I ever got (like strep) were usually right after dental work - cuts and scrapes in the mouth seem to open me up to germs. I may forgo the dentist for awhile if there is a big flu outbreak going on, but that's about it.

No, I will pass.. at least for now. I am not sure I trust any vaccine that was thrown together this quickly.

I'll get it if it is available for my age group. DD will get it. She has a lot of health issues and would be high risk for complications if she were to get the flu. We get the shots every year. We've never had a problem from them.

So sorry about your niece. :grouphug: Something similar happened to a girlfriend of mine the year I was pregnant and they did flu shots at my office. Hence the reason we don't do flu shots and won't do swine shots. And my whole family has been flu free for the past several years. My DD's ped even commented how she only sees us for annual check ups before school :thumbsup2

i informed my parents that i am not getting it. i doubt they'll make my sisters get it either.

i am a huge needle-phobe and will never willingly get a needle. i refused to get the cervical cancer one, and im due for a tetanus booster.

the only swine flu-related deaths i've heard of were people with pre-existing medical conditions. i am in pretty much perfect health. therefore, i don't see the point in getting vaccinated.

I am very sorry to hear about your niece. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

Yes, C.Ann, I read the article. The information contained gave me pause. That's why I passed it along. Sadly, it appears Rie'smom's niece is having neurological complications from the vaccine. I think there needs to be more information available about the Swine Flu vaccine and of course more testing.

ETA- I do know the condition Rie'smom's niece has could be from another cause, as stated above. However, the doctors thinking it might have come from the vaccination is curious to me. The article is interesting to me. YMMV. May be more than coincidence. I don't know.

I work in healthcare, DH has diabetes, and both my girls have asthma. DH, and I have always gotten the flu vaccine. I haven't vaccinated the girls but plan to this year. Not because of the H1N1, but because my oldest had the flu last year, and she was one sick puppy. No need to put her through that again.

I really don't think there will be enough vaccine for everyone. Our consulting pharmacist that comes to work said a couple of weeks ago that they are having yield problems, and there won't be as much as originally thought.

Not looking forward to 3 shots though:eek: The H1N1 is a 2-part series, and then the regular flu--YUCK

My doctor will probably want me to have it since I'm diabetic, but I doubt my DH will get it.

DD and I will get it. I am a health care worker and have asthma, DD has asthma and has been ill most of the summer with pneumonia. She still has it according to the CAT scan on Tuesday, but it is resolving.

25 people died as a result of that vaccine. Seems odd that your mom knew a percentage of people personally that died from it.

My family will not receive the shot. We don't get the flu shot but this does seem more dangerous than the typical flu. However, I make it a general rule not to get anything that is new on the market.

Did she say it was from the Swine Flu vaccination? If she did, I must have missed that part.. As far as I know, the Swine Flu vaccine isn't even available in the U.S. yet.. Does she live in another country? :confused3

I do know that there are the exact same concerns regarding GBS and other serious health risks from the menigitis vaccine that children 11 and up are supposed to get, but most parents are going ahead with that anyhow..

.

The numbers seem to be skewed - depending on what article you read and whether it's biased towards this new vaccine or against it.. I was an adult with small children in the 70's and I don't remember any signifcant number of people dying from the vaccine or contracting GBS.. It's something I would have remembered if it had been that serious (like Reye's Syndrome) and I definitely have no recollection of any large numbers of people having serious issues or dying..

Interesting topic..

None of us will be getting the Swine Flu vaccine. I spoke to our doctor about it and he believes it would be better to just take the usual precautions like frequent handwashing and going to see him immediately if flu symptoms appear. I've also researched the info myself, and I agree with him.

Ironically, just as I read your post I heard on our local news that someone here just died of Swine Flu who had no known health problems. (Too early for a link but if I can find one later I'll pull it up.)

Not to try to sway you one way or another - getting the vaccine or not is completely up to you. But I think it's a mistake to think that only sick or immunocompromised people die from SF.

I am diabetic and have COPD. My family will be getting the shot if available. I'll be on the priority list.

I get a flu shot every year and have since 1977 when I entered the Air Force. FWIW the flu vaccine is basically new every year as they tinker with it to target the anticipated strains of the virus.

I can remember the last time we had a swine flu scare and the GBS problems. I'll take my chances of being in the small percentage who might develop GBS - odds are that I'll be fine.
