If I wanted to book a stay at a resort that isn't home, and I wanted to be sure I got it....
Can I book a cash reservation, and switch it to points at the 7 month window?
I'm not sure if that is even possible..

I believe this can't be done. CRO and MS reservations are not linked.

You can link a cash ressie and a point ressie thru MS.

If this was allowed what would be the need for a 11 or 7 month window. Everyone would book 12 or more months out.

kdepcot is correct. It is not possible. Inventory for points rooms and cash rooms come from different places. DVC retains a 4-5% ownership in each resort and can rent those rooms out if they choose. (Sometimes they use their percentage to close rooms for renovation as well.) In addition to that 4-5%, the points that are freed up when members use their points for Disneyland, DIsney Cruise LIne, etc. go into the "Cash" pool as well. DVC has to pay for those DL/DCL/etc. accommodations and make the money by renting DVC units for cash.

So no, you won't be able to switch a cash reservation to a points one. If that were possible everybody would do it.

However.............you could book on cash ....hopefully discounted cash through MS.... to at least reserve what you want (if indeed you were willing to part with that cash) and then when you get to the 7th month weekend try and book on points and then cancel the cash. This is only a good idea if you really want a certain resort and want to make sure you get it one way or the other. Also,.....keep in mind that cash ressies come in quite handy at certain resorts when high point weekends come into play...or if some of the days aren't available on points. You can do a mix of cash and points days.

You can do it but it does not guarantee points availability at 7 months so that you can switch it.

As noted, no you can't. But you can book your home resort at 11 months and/or a different resort at 7 months out and waitlist your preferred options.
