Will this work? Re: connecting flights

I hope I can explain this. We are looking for airfare from Atlanta to MCO (my son is special needs and can't ride in a car for long distances). Airfare from ATL is over $300. Well I just checked on airfare from Birmingham, AL and it is $188. There are several flights which make connections in Atlanta which have at least 2 hour layovers and require completely switching planes.

So, could I buy 5 tickets for BHM to MCO and *miss* the 1st leg of the flight out of BHM and just get on here in Atlanta? Then we essentially are flying direct at a much cheaper price. Coming home we would just get off in Atlanta and then not get on the 2nd leg to BHM.

will this work? Since it requires all BHM passengers disembark in ATL and change planes (they are different flight numbers and different aircraft), can we do it? Thanks for any advice.

No you may not do that. The quoted fare requires flying the entire itinerary.

The airlines enforce the rule by cancelling the rest of your itinerary if you miss a segment.

Thanks. BHM is only 2 hours away, so we could drive to BHM and fly from there. Coming home, would there be a problem in getting off in Atlanta and not continuing to BHM (it wouldn't matter if they cancel that segment)?

If you drove to Birmingham for the trip to Disney but got off in Atlanta on the trip back home, how would you retrieve your car?

We would rent a car to BHM and take the subway home.

The tip doesn't work much anymore. The skycaps can't really override the computers... Your luggage goes to B'ham.

One way car rental to Birmingham is about $60 for planning.

Also, check out SW Earlier today they had $39 each way from Birmingham!

It would absolutely not work on the outbound because if the 1st segment is missed than the entire itinarary is cancelled.

If you were to try to skip the last leg of the flight the only problem I see is the luggage. You have to check the luggage through to its final destinantion and due to obvious security concerns they are suppose to be more diligent. If you are not checking bags it shouldn't be a problem.

Carol--suppose they booked a connection with a maximum layover, possibly even overnight if the carrier permits, and ask to have the luggage just checked to the first leg. Say something like they want access to the luggage during the layover. Can a tipped skycap do a manual luggage tag? When my luggage got misplaced the luggage tag that got it home was not computer generated so the airlines still have the ability to issue manual tags.

I don't know if they can do manual tags anymore. I think the other issue is that I can't even recall the last time I saw a tag back there. Do they even have manual tags anymore at the skycap stands? Even in poduck USA the skycaps have electronic tags now. I am flying out of Atlanta Thursday. I may just ask if they have manual tags. I am curious now.

I had an overnight layover in DFW one time and they told me at check in that my luggage and I were not getting together again until the final destination (which I was prepared for. I had my carryon for the night at the Hyatt)
