Will the corned beef taste the same if I...

Hmm...still not convinced about the corned beef. But now I'm craving soda bread - off to dig up some recipes and get baking! Soda bread, barn brack....maybe some shortbread for dessert!

have you never had corned beef before? it's SO good! i can't wait until Wednesday!!

Does any Irish person actually eat the stuff? I know in my family we've never had it. Bleh! Is it an irish-american tradition like green beer?

i LOVE it!! lol! my grandparents used to make it(my grandfather was the Irish one, grandma was Italian) but my parents never made it(they're not really all that into cooking, anyway lol) but DH and i have been doing it every year since we've been married!!

can't wait until Wednesday! and a friend of mine is keeping up with the Irish theme and making a Bailey's chocolate chip cheesecake!!

I eat corned beef but I hate cabbage and boiled carrots. I cook the beef in beer and make sure I get a lean cut, its very tasty. We either have mashed potatoes or roasted, I steam the carrots for dh and the kids. I don't ever cook corned beef except on St. Patty's Day but I do enjoy a reuben out from time to time.

Just found this...a little laugh! (and seriously the salted pork and fried cabbage is amazing! no one can make it like my granny!) Happy St Patrick's Day everyone!!

GOOD GRIEF - NOT BEEF!
I just want to put something straight
About what should be on your plate,
If it's corned beef you're makin'
You're sadly mistaken,
That isn't what Irishmen ate.

If you ever go over the pond
You'll find it's of bacon they're fond,
All crispy and fried,
With some cabbage beside,
And a big scoop of praties beyond.

Your average Pat was a peasant
Who could not afford beef or pheasant.
On the end of his fork
Was a bit of salt pork,
As a change from potatoes 'twas pleasant.

This custom the Yanks have invented,
Is an error they've never repented,
But bacon's the stuff
That all Irishmen scoff,
With fried cabbage it is supplemented.

So please get it right this St. Paddy's.
Don't feed this old beef to your daddies.
It may be much flasher,
But a simple old rasher,
Is what you should eat with your tatties.

The concept of boiled dinner is very Irish -- on both sides of the pond, although in Ireland it was frequently made with lamb.

For those who want to make their veggies separately but want them to have some of the flavoring, get a little pickling spice to throw in the veggie pot.

Some people are saying that they cook theirs in the crock pot with beer. How many beers to how many corned beefs?

Any recommendations for type or brand of beer?

agnes!

I'm roasting the potatoes and stir frying some cabbage. I'm not a fan of the boiled vegies. I will do onions and carrots in with the corned beef.

I've been adding beer to mine these last few years, whatever I can find in the frig, 1 or 2 bottles, depending on how much is in my pot. You can't really hurt it, it's just more flavor. It was always good before that, with just water too.

If you have any potatoes and corned beef left over, they make a fabulous breakfast hash. We don't use the leftover veggies for this because they are sort of slimy. Instead we might saute in some raw onion and bell peppers with the potatoes and corned beef, top with fried eggs, delicious!

Ok, this thread made me VERY hungry this morning, so after I took the kids to school, I went to the grocery store and bought baby carrots, cabbage, onions (used 2), potatoes (used 4 lg) and a small flat corned beef w/ seasoning. I wanted to try it with one guiness, but they only sold 6 pks at Food Lion dang it. The corned beef was very deceiving. It looked purty on top but open the pack and I had to cut a whole slab of fat off the backside. It wouldn't all fit in my big crockpot (wished I had 2 of them at this point), so I put all the veggies, corned beef, seasoning pack, and 3 big glasses of water in a stockpot on 5 and told dh when it cooks down to put it all the crockpot. It's only my 2nd attempt cooking corned beef :). I don't think the veggies would taste as good cooked separately, with me cooking them anyways.

Yum, I love corned beef and cabbage. I am not Irish so I never had it growing up but my DH is Irish and has made it for us every year on St. Patty's day. I can't wait for dinner tomorrow!

All corned beef has the fat on one side. Believe it or not, you do cook it with that left on -- seems very odd to me, too, but that's just corned beef.

I just watched an older episode of Good Eats last night and Alton quick boiled some cabbage and then put it in a saute pan with melted butter, crushed croutons and caraway seeds, for a few minutes. It looked so good (and I dont even like cabbage) that I think I may try it on Wednesday.

The curse of the Irish for me has always been growing up eating boiled food

If you're cooking the veggies with the meat, you might want to rethink this. It does change the flavor of the carrots and potatoes and not in a good way.

No, we usually do the veggies separate so it will just be the corned beef in the crock pot.

Went out to store to grab my corned beef and they were all out of the flat cut. I didn't want the point cut because of all the fat so I went with the only one they had and I remembered it being mentioned on here, the round cut. Hope it's a good one. From the price of it I'm assuming it is. :rotfl: I got two of them because I LOVE leftover corned beef sandwiches!!

Totally forgot to grab some beer though. Called DH and he will be picking it up on the way home so I have no idea what kind it will be. Didn't have to ask him twice to get it, he even offered to grab a 12 pack as opposed to a 6 pack so that I could be sure to have enough for the corned beef.:rotfl2:
