Will restaurants help celebrate retirement?

I've read that special desserts are sometimes given by WDW restaurants if a birthday or anniversary is mentioned. We will be celebrating my mom's retirement when we go. Will they help us celebrate?
Thanks!

We have always had to order cakes from Disney Bakeries to be delivered on the occasion of the adr. They will celebrate anything. Try calling the resorts to connect you to their bakeries.

How about just a special treat for the guest of honor? Don't some restaurants share those for free or a small fee?

Regardless of what you can be lead to believe by reading accounts of this on these forums it is not common practice for them to provide desserts, or cakes for a special event without the guest ordering it. This is another situation where other's accounts lead one to except a certain service and not everyone gets it.

Some might provide a cupcake for a young child's birthday. We always order our own cakes from the resort bakery or in room dining.

We celebrated my cousins graduation and my uncle's birthday on our trip last week. My cousin received a cupcake at WCC and a cupcake and signed placemat at CM. In both cases the server also made a big deal about her and announced her graduation to the entire restaurant. She acted all embarassed, but she loved it.

My uncle got a 6 inch cake at GG on his birthday in addition to the dessert platter that comes with the meal and we sang happy birthday. I did not order anything from any bakeries or ask for anything, but did have the occassions noted on our ADRs. YMMV, but some restaurants do seem to help celebrate special occassions.

This is very true. Over the past 18 years of disney trips, birthdays, etc noted on reservations, only twice has anything special happened at a disney restaurant we were celebrating at. If you want to ensure something special will take place, make sure and set it all up yourself.

I got a chuckle out of the question, because when we went to Ohana it seemed like every table in the place except ours was "celebrating" a birthday or anniversary! At Ohana they sing a song to you, and believe me, the singing never stopped.

Other than a song, they probably won't give you anything for free. I can't really say I blame them, since I think a lot of people "celebrate" occasions that aren't really occasions in an attempt to get something for nothing. However, they do have nice treats that you can order for your meal or something special for your hotel room (for a price, of course ;) )
