Will it hurt my film?

I've never flown before. This will be our first trip to Disney.

My question: will the x-ray machines damage our film? I just bought 6 disposable 35mm Polaroid 800 speed film.

These pictures will be our only memories...so will they be okay or acan I ask to keep them from going through the x-ray machine??

Thank you soooo much!

Want to return those cameras to the (hometown) store where you bought them and buy new cameras at Disney?

Do not put film cameras or unceveloped (shot or not shot) film in checked baggage. If baggage needs to be checked at the last moment, stop right there and remove the cameras and film

800 speed should not be damaged in the carry through X-ray security machines. While the security agenst are supposed to hand check film under 1000 speed if you insist, they usually give you a hard time and are likelyt to inspect the rest of you and your things more thorougly (secondary inspection) if you isnist.

Keep film and camera in your carry-on. The x-ray machines in secruity do not harm the film.

The signs I've seen say 800 and higher need to be hand inspected. I keep all film/disposable cameras in a large ziploc bag out of their packaging. I had one roll turn out totally blank, I still wonder if it was somehow in my luggage and wasn't hand-checked. It was dd5 driving the monorail, I'm still bummed!

It's always recommended to take your camera and film on your carry-on bag. But there have been a couple times I'd forget that I have a roll of film (used and unused) in my luggage and nothing has ever happened to it. Still, it's better not to chance it.

The effects of xrays are cumulative so ask for a hand inspection. You might want to bring prepaid mailers with you to send them out for developing so you don't have to take them through security on your way home.

Disney does not do film developing on property any more.

I've never had a problem with disposable cameras, 35 mm or digital. I'm told it can withstand going through the X-Rays 4 times. Have always put them in carry-on.

Be prepared to "flash" your cameras at Security when they're inspected (to insure they're real, I suppose).

I have never seen 4 as the "magic" number for when damage can occur. It varies by machine the strength of the scanner. Just be careful and you will be ok.

I would have them hand-check 800 speed film. It definitely can be damaged by the machines they run it through with your carry-ons (and definitely never check it, as those machines are way more powerful). Before I went digital, I would sometimes have 40 rolls of film for a vacation (figure skating photos at competitions), and I would make them hand-check it. They usually hate to do it, but insist. Then you should be fine.

I went and visited my brother in Washinton DC and went to several museums, all of which had x-ray machines. SO my film got scaned about 8 or 9 times on the trip and they pictures came out fine for me.... (same thing when I went to NYC after my WDW trip, same fim went through the Carry-on x-rays both ways and through the x-rays at the empire state building and the statue of liberty)

DO NOT PUT IT IN THE CHECKED LUGAGE, the person I went to florida with put one roll film though the check lugage on our way down and the pictures on that roll came out blank....

Put your cameras in your carry on lugage. You need to have them hand check 800 speed film because the xray machine will expose the film. I am married to a professional photographer. There are signs at the check point that specifically tell you that damage will occur with 800 speed film. However, 100,200 and 400 speed film will be fine. :earsboy:

Rather than chance it I would put them in my carryon and then have security hand inspect it. When I went in January I sent my digital camera and memory cards through, but I had one of those waterproof disposables (for the water parks and pools) that I had hand checked (both going and coming back home). Security didn't have a problem doing it. Just make sure they're in a large clear ziplock, so they're easy to get to.

My concern is that you are carrying only 6 cameras. PLEASE carry more! I promise you will take more than 216 (36 exposure x 6 cameras) pictures. I took a digital and even deleting ALOT of them during the day (or at the end of the day), I had alot more than 216 pictures at the end of a week. With disposable cameras there is no way to know how many 'bad' pictures you may wind up with. Disposable cameras would be very expensive in WDW and believe me you will use alot of film every day. You could easily take 200+ pictures in just one day.

my parent's disposable cameras got a little "fuzzy" due to the Xray machines. :(

I don't know where they had it, carry on - or baggage though.

>>> came out blank.

Examine the negatives. If the borders around most of the pictures are dark or darkened, even if irregularly so, it was likely X-rays. If the borders around just pictures #1 and #2 are dark, it was likely less than perfect handling by the film processor or maybe you if the camera was loaded manually. If the film is relatively clear with no pictures, then it was a camera malfunction.
