What’s for Dinner Tonight?

Went to a local beach resort for my Dad’s 81st birthday. He’s always so inspiring. Healthy, active and charming as always.

No dinner since we didn’t eat until 1:30ish for the celebration. I had a large green salad and a beautiful piece of quiche Lorraine. With a nice glass of bubbly to cheers dear ole pops.

to him! It's awesome that he's doing so well at 81. Good for him!

We had a big lunch after church with friends and our friend visiting DW from out of town. After the friend left, DW and I went to the mall to shop for tennis shoes (I've had the same 2 pairs for 11 years, and my goal with my tax refund was to buy new). So we got some yogurt while we were out then came home and had sourdough toast from bread we bought when we were out. We visited a new grocery store type place called Trader Joe's. It was really neat. Lots and lots of organic and natural stuff, healthy stuff. So we might start shopping there more often.

Our trip to the Chinese Buffet ended up being late lunch 3pm. It was ok. Not the best, there is better Chinese from normal take out places near us but the birthday girl wanted this buffet. There are a couple better buffets a little closer in the other direction, I guess we don't go there because it's a bigger/busier town. I had pretty much all protein. Sesame Chicken, Honey Chicken, the little fried scallops, Mayonnaise shrimp and Butter shrimp. Then I had one deep fried zucchini slice, LOL. I definitely don't get my money's worth at a buffet (Or I guess it's my BIL's money, LOL since he treated us) I only got one plate and then a plate of dessert: A cream puff, some fruit salad and tapioca pudding

At about 9pm I had the rest of my salad from last night's pizza order.

I'm on a serious quest to limit our food waste. With just the two of us and nothing for freezer space, the choices are bad - either shop daily and only get what I need for the meal (always seems to cost more doing this) or do bigger, more economical shops and end up not using everything if plans pivot. Tonight I used what was on hand and needed using - I sauteed a couple of ageing chicken breasts, made a mushroom cream sauce with a few mushrooms past their peak, roasted the last of a bag of baby potatoes and served it with an odds-and-ends wedge salad for DH and frozen brussels sprouts for me. I also forced DH to eat the last of an apple pie I made him a few days ago. It's rare not to have to throw out the last of something I bake, so I was pleased with that.

We'll see tonight. We'll be gone most of the day.

We drove the rest of the way home yesterday. We planned to stop at Chili's but the parking lot was packed so we ended up at Panchero's instead. Tonight I think I'm making sheet pan chicken Shawarma. We had a great trip and are counting down to our long trip in only 29 days.

Tonight I’m making one pot chicken and rice with roasted asparagus.

I have girls weekend this weekend, so I’m trying to get all the things done before I go. Tonight I need to make my packing list in case I need to pick anything up.

We found a new store last night (Trader Joes), and we picked up some Gnocci. We're going to put it with some canned chicken tonight and make chicken gnocci and garlic bread.

We found a new store last night (Trader Joes), and we picked up some Gnocci. We're going to put it with some canned chicken tonight and make chicken gnocci and garlic bread.

I shop at traders joes a lot.I find their pantry staples (oils, vinegars, spices) to be a good price. DH loves their sweet chili sauce. I use it as a dipping sauce with egg rolls, chicken tenders, coconut shrimp. I like their general tso sauce. I sauté chicken and broccoli with it and serve over rice.

when we moved we were devastated to leave trader joe's behind. when we visited back home we would make stop and buy non perishables that we either packed in our luggage or went to a shipping store to mail back (sadly-could not bring/send our favorite frozen foods). almost 5 years later we got one local to us

the dolmas are very good (just had some with lunch), the corn salsa is great (I like to mix it with canned black beans), the frozen foods we like best are-scallion pancakes (go really well with any of their frozen Asian foods), steak and ale pies, chili rellenos. dh LOVES their Indian foods (too hot for me) and carnitas burritos. they have 2 frozen bowls-burrito and cuban both of which are quite tasty. ds enjoys the pizza mac and cheese (their flatbread pizzas are very good). I like their 'guiltless guacamole'.

the breads are very good (their naan and challah in particular).


if it's easy access go frequently and try whatever they are sampling-just get one or two things to try each time so you can avail yourself of trying more via the samples.

The closest Trader Joe’s to me is 30 min. away in a busy city so the parking is a nightmare. I wish there was one near me!!

If you like hummus, there’s a 3 layer hummus that is soooo good. I had my girlfriend pick one up for me the last time she was there.

@2xcited2sleep I have liked the overall quality of most TJ items I have bought. I did not like some of the fresh bread and fresh pastry items but DH says I am a hard judge on those items because I bake a lot.

Produce - overall decent quality and price.

Cheese - I’m a cheese girl and love their cheese section. Lots of options. In the summer they sell a small container of just the inside of burrata, it’s a game changer on a toasted baguette with pesto, fresh tomatoes, and their balsamic glaze.

Frozen - DH likes their frozen pastas and some of the Asian dishes, I keep them in hand for when I’m not home. I also buy their hash brown patties, frozen veggies, sometimes a frozen pizza and I keep their frozen herbs on hand.

Pantry staples - I have a bunch of their herbs, olive oil, vinegars, balsamic glazed (they had a 3 pack), etc.

Sauces - general tso, sweet chili, and their teriyaki sauce as a marinade

I find their baking mixes to be fun and seasonal but haven’t loved any.

Snacks - DH really likes their cheesy poofs, my dad likes all their crackers, I like their trail mixes snd dried fruit

Apps - I keep a bunch in the freezer for last minute Company. I really like the spinach artichoke dip

I haven’t tried many of their frozen desserts.
