After staying at mostly deluxe resorts at WDW will I be dissapointed with SOG? I have read nice things about it but I still don't have a great idea of what to expect. Anyone else have the experience of SOG after doing a lot of deluxe? :earsgirl:

My only WDW Experience is Contemporary and Beach Club twice including Consierge once. My only complaint about SOG is the same one i have with Contemporary. Location. We prefer MGM and Epcot most so we prefer the location of Beach Club. I loved SOG. It was beautiful. It was a bummer not getting the mickey soaps and containers to bring home for souveniers but Im sure my family is tired of getting them anyway :-)

The inside walk in SOG (We was in the new section) reminded me a lot of walking through the halls of Beach Club. It was nicely done and being new when I went was very nice. I did miss the big pool at Beach CLub but the price different ce made up fo that. Next time we go I would consider Beach CLub again is money is tight (We get it for about $100 a night verses $250+ a night at Beach Club) I rented a car last time and would never do any resort again with out a car. (Beach Club has problems with the Downtown one. We must have waited 45 minutes for a bus last time I was there).

guess disappointment is what ever you make of it. What are you expecting? If you know it wont be avaliable you can find the best of what is there.

I don't think you will but you have to go in with the idea of having a great time and staying that the SOG for the experience of staying at the SOG and not comparing it to other resorts. I think the place is great, a great deal for the $$ and a very nice hotel for the $$. Does it compare to Disney Deluxes, guess that depends on the Deluxe - rooms are bigger than most of the others, it's been recently remodeled and updated so it's "fresher" than most of the others. Really any experience is what you make it so if you go in with the idea that it's not a Disney Deluxe and you are missing something then you'll probably be disappointed. If you go in with the idea of a new experience at a great hotel in a great location then you'll probably have a blast. Think of the money you are saving compared to say the Contemporary and what you can do with the extra $$ at WDW :) Have a great trip.

Thanks!
I always have a good time at WDW! I would stay in a cardboard box if it meant I could be there! I guess what I mean by dissappointed is more lacking in a Disney feel. I felt CBR was less Disney feeling the other places I have stayed. It probably does not have a whole lot to do with being a deluxe or not. I just love the lobbies of the deluxe.
I just am looking forward to going back soooo much and I want to brace myself if SOG is not going to have a big Dinsey feel to it.

We loved the SOG!
Have stayed at the Contemporary, Polynesian, Grand Floridian, and Boardwalk.
While we loved those places (a lot!) you can't beat the price at the SOG.
Room size is bigger than even the GF.
We really didn't feel that too much of the magic was missing. We could "purchase" more magic with the money we saved by doing other things we enjoy at Disney.
Don't think you'll regret staying at SOG. :earsboy:

We have stayed at almost all of the deluxes and we still love SOG! :sunny: The renovations to the hotel are beautiful and it has such a relaxing atmosphere. We have never had a bad stay there. Enjoy your trip!! :wizard:

The new lobby is very comfortable. Much more so than the CR. It reminds me a little of a modest WL. We love SoG but then we like being a little removed from the hoopla of WDW on our downtime. We like it a little quieter, though given the chance we would grab a stay at the Poly again. But for the money it can not be beat!!! Check out the website for a feel of SoG

We LOVED Shades of Green - the rooms were wonderfully large, even the layout was preferable to the disney ones - I loved having a balcony overlooking the pool, even the golf course is a great view. The people were nice, it is very relaxing in atmosopher and so huge - never a crowded feel. Also, no tax in store or resturaunts - a plus. We did not miss the Disney feel because we were daily in the parks, it actually felt relaxing to return to SOG, great for the baby to nap, and I loved the location.

I agree with you. I was a hotel snob for years, staying always in Deluxes except for one visit at Dixie Landings, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I bit the bullet and stayed at SoG. I was very pleased, even the first time. I will honestly tell you that I like it soooo much better than the Wilderness Lodge.

Explain SOG please. Not familiar with that one. Thanks

Shades of Green is an Armed Forces Recreation Center located on the WDW property. SoG is reserved for the use of active and retired members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. Reserves, National Guard, as well as currently employed DOD civilians and U.S. Public Health Officers are eligible.

I just returned from the SOG in mid May. The old part of SOG is great ,food is close , pools are close. The new part is IMO like a holiday inn. I stayed in both sections. The new rooms are a long way from the lobby, pools and buses. Our new room was 1/4 mile to the lobby and then a 1/4 mile to the pool and food. The people were great and cust svc was good, but for retired people or people with minor problems the distances are just too far. Iwould stay again but only in the old section.

We will have two people with mobility issues. Thanks for the tips on the old section versus the new. A 1/4 of a mile is a long way for them to walk although one does have a wheel chair. :flower:
