Will I be disappointed in Disneyland?

i have a good chunk of time in September that I could go to Disneyland or simply see other things in Southern California. Coming in as a frequent WDW visitor I look at the park hours, lack of fireworks, ride closures etc and am afraid I will be disappointed.

Any words of encouragement to get me psyched up for Disneyland? I have researched the different rides etc but I have never had a problem getting excited about the chance to go to WDW so I am somewhat at a loss.

I was there in February for the first time and we absolutely loved it....I was not expecting to like it. I got a free pair of airline tickets and did it to please my wife who constantly talked about wanting to go. So i went into it wanting to not like it. However it far exceeded my expectations for sure

The lack of nighttime entertainment is a huge bummer. But as great as these things have been, especially PTN, they are things that add to the charm and magic of DL, but do not themselves create it. You should go because simply put you do not know what you are missing.

I have been an AP holder at WDW and spent approximately 16 weeks there. This year we spent a fortnight at Disneyland and I cannot tell you how much we truly loved it. A few things we loved:

* Being in the original park. We loved to see the differences between Disneyland and Magic Kingdom. We did the Walk in Walts Footsteps Tour and it was beautiful to talk about Walts vision for the park.

* The ease at park hopping. Once you have gone through security/bag check, you can hop between Disneyland and California Adventure easily. We hopped between the two often. Starting in one, going to the other and then back again. It's also easy to stop into Downtown Disney

* Seeing the difference between the rides that are at both WDW and Disneyland. Seeing the rides that are only at DLR.

* Different Characters at DLR - some villians, Bert from Mary Poppins, Mad Hatter.

I would recommend spending at least two days here. I really doubt you will be disappointed.

As much as I love DL, maybe you should consider those other things SoCal has to offer and hit up DL another time. I want to say the magical feeling of it all will overwhelm you and you'll forget your disappointment but that's just not a guarantee these days for all the reasons you've listed. If this is your one and only chance I would say go to DL but if you'll have other chances in the next few years the parks should be in better shape in the future. As for shows and park hours, in order to get more you have to visit during a busier season, they are only extended when there is a large amount of people anticipated to be in the parks. Not coming back to SoCal for a while? DL still has some wonderful things to offer you just won't encounter at WDW: Carsland, WOC, Matterhorn, park hopping so easy it can make a WDW vet's jaw drop, and even the next generation of monorail (I felt like I was stepping back in time when I rode WDW's monorail last year). Is it still fun? Yes. Is it still somewhat different from WDW? Yes. Will it be a better experience in the future? Yes.

Other things in Southern California you could do include the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park. Both are very different experiences and I highly recommend them to anyone visiting SoCal! The Zoo is world class and you can barely see the whole thing in one full day, and the Safari Park is just so different from traditional zoos (there was a jaguar run when we were there (happens if the jaguar feels like it)- I swear it ran by so fast it was a blur of color). We did an amazing tour at the Safari Park where we drove INTO the giraffe and rhino exhibit and it was one of the neatest things I've done in my life. (Expensive, but an absolute steal when one considers the cost of going to Africa to try to do that!) There are other things to see and do in SoCal and so if part of you is overwhelmingly concerned about being disappointed in your first trip to DL put it off and explore what else we have to offer. It's ok!

This is good...perhaps it is because Wishes has become such a moment with my now adult daughter that I can't imagine a trip without it. I will be in my own for this visit.

Thank you for the review of the zoo. That is very encouraging.

It doesn't look like this will be a one chance trip. I will be on my own and its primary purpose is for mental health and relaxation.

Your comments about it being better in the future made me think that perhaps my issue is that with WDW I know what is down/missing but I also know what I would do to fill my time where I dont have that back up knowledge for DL. Hmmm...

Yes, you will be disappointed.
You will experience exactly what you think you will experience.
This. If you o to DLR expecting it to be like WDW you will be disappointed. They are not the same and they are not trying to be the same.

Thank you for thought but I am not going into this trip, let alone this post, with a pre determined outlook. I am looking for people's experiences and facts...with the hope, actually, of getting excited about the park. I have never had trouble getting excited about WDW even going during the height of spring break or during extremely high heat...so I was not sure what I was missing or why I was having a hard time with this trip. I am more than willing to admit that it is in my own head...I was hoping to hear positive reports from enthusiastic people to jump start my psyche.

I think you will enjoy it if you look at it as a different place entirely and not as a comparison. I've been to DL too many times to count and to WDW only once. I found my visit to WDW to be very interesting and I only compared some things that were the same/similar such as Tiki Room and the Haunted Mansion. They are just different places. I know many people post here that one is better than the other. The truth is they are different places with different weather and different people who visit them. Don't compare and you will have a great time.

I have never been to WDW. So I have nothing to compare it to, but from what I hear you have to look at the park with a mind set it is a different park. Check out the things WDW doesn't offer or the differences in rides. For example I hear DL POTC is by far better. Also think of the history the park has like Walts apartment above Main Street. Try and go in with a positive mind set and you should have a good experience.

I would take any chance I could get to go to Disneyland! And, as a PP has said, the evening entertainment simply enhances what is already there! There is so much more to the parks than fireworks or a night parade. Yes, those things are great, but it also means that the parks will be less crowded in the evening hours and you can go enjoy more rides that may have been too crowded earlier in the day. Also, WOC will still be running, which is unique to Disneyland, so you have that to look forward to as well! You will have a GREAT time and I'm sure no regrets if you decide to go.

I could spend all day, every day just wandering between CarsLand, Wine Country and Paradise Pier. I grew up at WDW (and still go quite often), but Disneyland (especially California Adventure) is my happy place now.

I just like the food, the drinks, the atmosphere and the weather so much better. And Radiator Springs Racers is worth the trip alone.

If you are a Disney history buff, you'll love DL, closures and all. So much has been touched and designed by Walt.

The lack of the DLRR and River of Americas attractions is noticeable, but doesn't affect most attractions. DLR resort has more rides between 2 parks than all 4 WDW parks combined. If you'll be there after Sept. 9, Main Street, Adventureland, New Orleans Square, Tomorrowland, Critter Country, Toontown and Fantasyland are running on all cylinders (as is BTMRR in Frontierland). Plus, DCA offers Carland, RSR, California Screaming, Grizzly River Run, a shorter line for TSMM, etc. And the Frozen show tops any show currently at WDW.

After Sept. 9, the seasonal Haunted Mansion Holiday will be running (as will Ghost Galaxy), the Halloween decorations will be up.

Honestly...less fireworks, less parades and no Fantasmic mean less congestion because DL does not feature the wide walkways and open space of the MK. Fantasmic backs up foot traffic from Critter Country to Adventureland, making it hard to get to several attractions, the fireworks close Toontown for the night and parts of Fantasyland temporarily (and force all east-west traffic through the hub) and the parades make getting over to Tomorrowland, parts of Fanstayland, and Toontown difficult.

Even just the thought of some beignets and a mint julep send me into a wonderful mood!
