Yes, they sometimes "walk away". Maybe not out of malice, but some folks think they may have been abandoned or they may not know that you have to rent them... they may think that DCL provides these as complimentary amenities for their guests.
If you put them on your chairs and put your towels on top of them, that should signal that they have not been abandoned.
And if, by some chance, your float does "walk away", previous DISers have reported that if you bring your receipt to the rental counter, they've been offered another float.
is it at all possible to check them back in and out? If we could check them in when not using then check back out again I think it would be a big help.
Checkin in and out really is not necessary. If yours get 'misplaced' they will cheerfully issue you another one. Some people also like to bring some sort of a ribbon or something to mark their tube -- and make it easier to find. And even others prefer to bring their own inexpensive floats along so they can be easily recognized -- then they usually just leave them behind.
I agree that it probably isn't necessary to do this.
We just put ours up beside our chairs w/ all our other junk (we seem to always bring too much)! You can also take them back up & exchange for a tube or float, whichever you haven't tried -- very cool!!
