We've just booked for next August but the flights are horrifically expensive - about £1100 per person regardless of which airline or where from. Do the prices generally drop?

What dates? most airlines have not released prices yet for August.
Prices tend to be high on realease as they know many people are waiting and want to book. Usually better waiting for an offer but no-one can know the best time to book.
You need to be as flexible as possible, with dates, UK airports & US airports. If you are only willing to fly direct you will often pay a lot more. I have just booked Easter, VA direct £1215, Delta indirect £477.
Good luck.

We want to go from our local airport which is East Midlands, Nottingham. Prices in the past have been significantly cheaper than they are at the moment. We plan to go August 13th as they only fly once a week from East Midlands to Sanford. Is it a matter of keeping an eye on the prices until they start to drop?

If you use charter airlines from regional airports then expect prices £800 to over £1000pp. possibly cheaper but I wouldn't count on it.
Scheduled airlines (VA or BA) direct into MCO from Manchester or London expect £700-900 always chance of a deal but doubt it.
Indirect from Man or Lon £600+ but many booked this year from £450ish.

All you can do is check every day and watch the forums, we post any deals we can find for August, so many people are wanting them, including myself.

As Wayne states, all you can do is check every day, watch the forums and be as flexible as possible.

Although you can't go on the prices and release dates of previous years you can still use it as a guide to at least assure yourself that prices do reduce at times for August.

To find these try clicking on "Search this Forum" and type in 'August Flights' and plough through those threads, one can be found at http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2825675&highlight=august+flights

Another way to check past offers is on http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/Flight-Sale-Dates-and-Prices-p-683.html
They record the previous year's sale dates and prices for individual airlines and travel companies so it's a guide to what might lie ahead.

Happy searching.....
