Will Disney VHS be worth something?

I can't give them away. I had a yard sale a couple of weeks ago and put them as free and not one person even stopped to look at them.

I guess it depends on the movie.
A vendor at the California State Fair this year had a stack of Disney VHS tapes of "Song of the South" priced at $40. But that movie may be the exception.

Well yeah because it'll be a cold day in heck before Disney ever puts it out.

You can donate them to Goodwill, they took all of mine a few weeks ago. We actually had a yard sale a few months ago and shockingly sold more VHS tapes then DVDs. Maybe because we priced the VHS tapes at 25 cents.

Of course you could always assume your Disney VHS tapes are worth a small fortune likes these folks:

That Belle's Christmas has never been on DVD/Bluray that's why. I have mine tucked away in my closet. Maybe I should try to sell mine. Hmmm.

This is an old thread - it was started in 2009! But at least it makes sense why it was bumped - I see someone wants old VHS tapes.

I actually threw a bunch of them out a few years ago - it just wasn't worth even trying to find takers for them.

I threw away all my old VHS tapes years ago but I did keep some of the plastic containers because of the artwork.

We made the decision not to invest in replacing VHS tapes with DVDs or BluRay. In some ways I regret it a bit, as we never realized how bad VHS quality is compared to DVDs. But, we've saved a ton on money by not duplicating. We'll keep our VHS and players so we can play for our grand kids one day.

We have tons of them still sealed up in the original wrap. DW bought them thinking they'd be "collectible". Ugh.

Just remember that VHS tapes (like DVD's) have a "shelf life" and start to deteriorate after a number of years. The exact time depends on the quality of tape and so forth.

We have been replacing the VHS tapes of our favorites we have with dvd's as they come out.

(to answer your question, we have been giving them to charity. At least someone will get some more viewing enjoyment out of them before they are unreadable)

The most important thing for magnetic tape is storage conditions. Not too humid, not too dry, and relatively cool would be ideal. Other than that, there's going to be an inherent amount of "bleed through" (aka "print-through") where the pattern from one layer affects the next layer and so forth. You might also have issues with the magnetic particles sticking. I've heard of archived reel-to-reel master audio tape being baked in a convection oven such that the magnetic particles won't stick. It may not be a long term solution, but it can be good enough to make a digital copy.

VHS tape also wasn't really meant to last that long. They wanted to pack 2 hours at standard play, although it's possible to go longer with thinner base tape, which then presents issues. I mean - there's nothing quite like when the mechanism fails and the tape wraps itself around who knows what.

I have a bunch of them. I don't know if they're going to be worth anything but I don't want to keep them any longer to find out. I'm going to donate them to the library or goodwill.

What's that scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Look at this. It's worthless - ten dollars from a vendor in the street. But I take it, I bury it in the sand for a thousand years, it becomes priceless. Like the Ark.

Yeah, I fought every movie on VHS purchase that anyone in my house made, and every DVD purchase. I really can't think of any movies or shows I would want to own. Rcord and watch, and erase, sure, own, no.
Needless to say, I got a lot of movies and shows as Christmas gifts. Our kids got tired of us claiming Saturday Night Live was better the first 5 seasons than it has been since so they got us the first 5 seasons on DVD. And after forcing them to watch them, they agree, the first 5 seasons were the best. ;)

They were the best!

We are movie freaks here. There's not one movie in my collection that hasn't been watched at least more than a dozen times. They are watched almost daily here so it's been worth it. Bluray has been worth it as well. We put on a DVD awhile back because that movie didn't have a blu and the difference in quality is stunning.

Enchanted Christmas was available on DVD. I have it. It was probably never put on BluRay though.

Yeah, VHS tapes are pretty much worthless, except for maybe sentimental value. I don't even have a VHS player anymore and all of the Disney movies I've ever had on tape I have on DVD, but I still can't bring myself to get rid of those VHS tapes.

Was it? Not sure how I missed it. Anything Beauty and the Beast goes for a pretty penny though. I wouldn't pay it but people do

The only VHS movie from Disney I have is Song of the South. Since I cannot find it on DVD or BluRay, I'm keeping it.
