Wii, Kinect? or other?

I would go to the store, look a the game selection, find the ones you would use the most and buy that system. For the casual gamer, they are all about the same, quite honestly. Some systems are better for the blood/guts games while others will have more kid friendly games. When we first got our Wii the kids were pretty disappointed in the game selection. They almost never use the Wii to play games any longer-the XBox 360 gets used the most-but my kids are older.

I love my Wii!! There are so many games and I have a walking game that your daughter would probably love to do. You walk along earning "points" or "coins" and everywhere you look there are things to buy. You get so caught up in buying stuff, the time just flies! But I'm glad to see the other companies are getting on board with the "get up and move" bandwagon since we really need to get people up and moving! What ever one you get, I know you'll love it. So we're playing Reflex Ridge, and we're taking turns now (because it is as fun to watch as it is to play, and this way we can each rest while the other is playing)....very cool....as we switch, the Kinect recognizes us and automatically switches Avatar.

OP, do you have a gaming console already? Keep in mind that the Kinect isn't a whole system on it's own. It's just a peripheral for the Xbox 360. So if you don't have an Xbox, you'll need to get that also. With the Wii, you just need to get enough remotes (and nunchucks for some games) for however many people will be playing (up to four).

I personally wouldn't get a 360 just for the sake of Kinect. If I were only getting a console for motion based games, I'd get the Wii at this point since there are many more games to choose from. But there are lots of other great titles for the 360, and it's a great system if you are likely to play the other games as well as the Kinect titles.

I haven't gotten Kinect yet so I don't know if this is still the case, but the early reviews said that only two players could play at a time with it (though there are plenty of other 360 games that can accomodate more players). The Wii can accomodate up to four players on some games.

It will play 4 players, but only 2 side-by-side so far that I have seen. Course, I have not played all the games yet either.

That's true. If you're just going to need room to hold your profile and game saves then that's a good option. The big problem with that console is that you can't download additional content from the Xbox Marketplace to it. If you don't intend to get online with your Xbox that isn't an issue, but if you ever want to download things like arcade games or new content for games (like songs for Rock Band or Guitar Hero, maps for the shooters or cars for some racing games) then the hard drive is necessary.

I work at gamestop. Answering this question is basically my job description.

Basically, if you're wanting motion interactive games, its there on all three systems. The decision maker for your family should be what kind of games you want. If you do online multiplayer games, the wii is out. If you are more of a family of casual gamers, definitely lean towards the wii. Go to your local game store (kmart, target, walmart, gamestop) and look at the games in each section. What games do you think you and or your family would enjoy the most? Look at that system. The xbox and ps3 have a lot of crossovers, but each have their own exclusives. In my personal experience the online multiplayer is better with the xbox, but for the interactive motion games I'd lean towards the ps3.

I own a wii and xbox and I'm looking into getting a ps3. The ps3 has the most to offer of the three in my opinion. The internet is free, unlike the xbox, the hardware has been more refined than xbox, it plays bluray and streams netflix. The ps3 is more than a game system. I'd put the wii in second place for offering more than games because again the internet is free and you can stream netflix. The xbox can play dvds and stream netflix but you have to pay for the internet to be able to do so.

There is no right or wrong answer for everyone. I suggest going to a store and talking to the game advisers about exactly what you're looking for and what will meet your family's needs.

If you're not very familiar with video games, I recommend checking out the ESRB's rating system and familiarizing yourself with it before buying games for kids.

In my personal experience ... the interactive motion games I'd lean towards the ps3.

Is that considering the Xbox Kinect? I cannot imagine how the Move could be better, but then again I haven't tried it.

Yes, mostly because of the variety each system offers. I just looked up all the kinect capable games and they're pretty generic and very limited. I found:
Kinect Adventures (the basic game that teaches you how to use kinect)
Kinect Sports (sports)
Dance Central (revamped DDR)
Kinectimals (the xbox version of the eyepet)
Your Shape Fitness Evolved (fitness game)
Motion Sports (sports)
Fighters Uncaged (boxing)
Sonic Free Riders (racing)
Kinect Joy Ride (racing)

For the technology to be there, the selection is really limited. There's no shooting games, no familar characters except sonic (who doesn't belong to microsoft anyway), nothing jumped out to me expect the kinectimals, which again, has its match on the ps3.

The PS3 Move brought up a much wider variety of games. It had the generic games that you have to have (sports, racing, fighting, fitness etc) but it also has big ps3 names on it like Little Big Planet, Time Crisis, Killzone, and unique games like Heavy Rain, and 3rd party recognizable titles like Tron.

Maybe the kinect will step their variety up, but if I had to buy a system right this heartbeat, it would be the ps3, no contest.

Considering that "be the controller" is the slogan for kinect, I'm going to say that's the option that fits what you want. Which is fine for casual gaming.

At this point in the game (no pun intended), the kinect isn't standing out at all to me. It has basic, basic generic games that the ps3 not only offers but surpasses. It's not impressive to me that this system appeared on the market offering much less than its competitors. Aside from not having a controller (which the wii did, a long long time ago on select fitness games) there's nothing special about it to me.

Like I said, there's no right answer about which one is the best. There isn't a best. The best is whatever fits an individual's needs/wants. For a lot of people, that's the wii. For others, kinect and for others the move.

This time of the year we get a lot of customers asking these exact questions like, "What should I buy" and I can't answer that. I don't live in your house and I don't know what you like. The best I can do is explain what each system has to offer, and for the kinect I feel like what it offers is limited compared to the competition. However, if the kinect fits someone's personal needs for a system, thats what they should buy. And that's what it sounds like you've found.

I think buying a video game system is an investment. They're not cheap, the games are not cheap, and the accessories are not cheap. Its something that you should ask questions about and definitely a decision you should be informed about. And that's my job.

And yes, we demo the kinect, move and wii at my store.

I've had the Wii for years, LOVE IT, but love how the XBox has incorporated movement into their games. I like the fact that it doesn't require controllers and you can add people without stopping. Thinking of getting it for my son's 18th birthday... for BOTH of us!
