How does the WiFi at the fort work? I think I read somewhere that you had to check out some hardware and pay a large deposit. Is that correct?

If you want WiFi at your site, yes you need to borrow a modem and leave a deposit. Otherwise, there is WiFi throughout the parks and in common areas around the campground like the pool.

We brought our netbook on our recent trip and said we'd get the modem for it if we needed to, but actually found we could do everything we needed to from our phones with either the WiFi in the parks or 3/4G at the campsite. We never even took the netbook out of the box!

Deposits can only be made with debit or credit card - not with KTTW cards.

We were at the fort July 29 through August 21, picked up a modem and cable tv box from the meadows trading post. No deposit, just signed a form for what we were taking, they had our name and site number, no other I'd was requested. If not returned then we would have been billed on our cc that we left on file when we registered at check-in.

1) You got lucky.
2) The procedure is to run one of those old-fashioned credit card slips.
3) You know, the paper is run through the machine over the card *
. . . if modem is returned, slip is torn up
. . . if modem is not returned, the slip is processed

* The way it was done in the ole-days (like the 1960's).

I guess I'm "EXTRA" lucky. They have never done that with me either.

They never did it when they were given out at the Outpost or now at the Meadows.

Also having the entire CC info (Name, number and exp date) laying around on paper would be a banking violation. Merchants are only allowed to show the last 4 digits of you CC# on receipts, they cannot even show the exp date anymore. There have been several fines and law suits over such violations.

Yeah. Not sure how it truly works, but I've rented it twice from the front desk and never went through this process. Both times, they were put on our KTTW card....never gave them a cc.....but we did have a cc tied to our KTTW card. Once we got the bill check out statement, I did see the $125 charge and then the credit as well. But they never asked us to run it separately on a credit card.

Just had a long weekend and no charge for modem. KTTW was linked to CC as always.

We stayed at one of the 1600 site and my WiFi work without using the fort kit, as my son put a modem and router in my RV last June, So I didn't have to use one from the meadows trading post.
So if anyone already has modem and router in RV you will get WiFi.

Count me among those who got a modem kit back in April 2013 and didn't pay a deposit. I had no credit card linked to my KTTW card (no charging privileges). I understand that if the process is properly implemented (run the card when checked out, cancel the charge when returned) it's the same effect. Maybe they've had a few kits not be returned under the "no deposit" policy.

Personally I don't care one way or another. As long as they don't run out of kits. ;)

We were in the 2000 loop a few weeks ago and picked up WIFI on our laptop without any modem, router, or kit. :confused3

What site number did u have? For example if you were close to the 2100 cabin loop maybe you picked up the cabin wifi. Those are the low 2000 numbers. Campers in the 600 loop near the Meadow TP can sometimes pick up the TP free wifi. Same for those 100 sites close to the Settlement TP.

It all depends on where the bits blow in tbe wind, so to speak.

Is it wi fi or just a cable modem? I have never heard of them giving out anything you could connect a wireless device to only wired.

Just making sure no one thinks that they are going to connect an iPad to a cable modem.

I think it's just the modem you can get from Fort Wilderness. I'm not sure since we never ended up doing it. But it's easy enough to bring along your own router if you have one and want wireless connection.

Yeah...that was probably it. The cabins were directly behind us, just across a little ditch.

It is just a cable modem with a yellow ethernet cable to plug into your laptop or computer. If you want wifi bring your wireless router from home and plug it into the ethernet cable and you have your own personal hotspot just like at home.

Is there wi-fi in the cabins?

can anyone confirm this?

I seem to recall from our last stay that there was wifi in the cabins.

And also the map of free wifi at easywifi.com looks like they've mapped piles of free access points in the cabin loops (as well as public areas).

Interestingly easywifi's map also seems to show some free spots in some of the camping loops- maybe people brought open wifi routers from home?

What is the cost for the wi-fi for campers at their site?
