Wicked

DD 15, went with her high school choir to Chicago. She fell in love with the musical! It's all we hear her singing around here, so I know the songs. She read the book and Son of a Witch and enjoyed both, but then she never met a book she didn't like. ;) Her high school is considering the play for their fall musical, so she has her fingers crossed. I think she fancies herself playing Elphaba. :rotfl:

I saw it in Toronto and am seeing it in NYC this summer. I am interested to compare the two productions!

Going to see it in August when its playing here! I heard nothing but good things about it so I'm really excited.

Saw Wicked on Broadway two weeks ago, and it blew me away. Went into the show with a vague idea of what it was about, and found it spellbinding.
Great performance.

Haven't seen the show yet but I agree the book was way too political...I enjoyed it, but it was too political. I also must say that the book is most def not for kids! :groom:

DH and I saw it in Toronto last year and thought that it was terrific. I am going to see it when it comes back in October with my MIL, my mom and my nieces (9).

If you get a chance go see it!

Its defintely in my top 3 (along with Cabaret and Lion King). So amazing! I thinkI'll listen tot he CD on the way home :cool1:

DD wanted to see it very badly. I couldn't get tickets in DC or Philadelphia so DH and I took her and her college roommate to see it on Broadway over her spring break. I knew next to nothing about it. I LOVED it. Went out and bought the soundtrack the next day. I am hoping to see it again when it comes to Baltimore next winter.

One of my all time favorite plays. Saw it on Broadway....idina Menzel was FABULOUS....I just love her in anything, but as Elphaba...she was just spectacular!!!!!
If you get the chance to go see it, defintiely go...you will NOT be disappointed! (my husband read the book, but said it was very slow compared to the play....he enjoyed the play much more)

In the original book Boq is a munchkin who's house Dorothy and Toto stay at at the beginning of their journey to the Emerald City. In Maguire's book, Boq is a character who both Galinda and Elphaba meet at Shiz, which is the same in the the musical. However, the musical has Boq basically become Nessarose's servant, being held against his will. When Elphaba enchants Nessa's shoes allowing her to walk, Boq tries to leave, but is stopped by Nessa, who tries to use Elphaba's spellbook to make Boq fall in love with her. However, because she cannot read the archaic spell language, Nessa only succeeds in causing his heart to shrink. To save him Elphaba transforms him into a Tin Man, since then he won't need a heart, therefore completely taking the character of Boq out of the original story by transforming him into another.

The fact that Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West) is the cause for the creation of the Tin Man is true (she enchants his axe, and the tin smith has to keep replacig his limbs with tin ones, until his whole body is tin), but it always slightly annoys me that the musical completely messes with these character's origins.....ok off my Oz soapbox :teeth:
Thanks! That was very interesting.

I found out from someone who read the book that there are lots of things that are different between the book and play...including the ending.

Got tickets for it in Toronto when it returns this fall.

I have tickets to see it in September. I can't wait! :dance3:

DD and I went to see it on Mothers day w/e. I didnt like the book but loved the musical. The girl that played Glinda was a scream and the costumes are awesome. We saw the guy who plays Fiero (and I do mean we saw him hee-hee) when he played the lead in the Full Monty. Wicked was a great show. :thumbsup2

I saw the show on Broadway on March 22. I had been wanting to see it for a long time and DH surprised me with tickets in my Christmas stocking! I absolutely LOVED it! I had been listening to the soundtrack since he gave me the tickets and for those who think they basically know the story from the soundtrack, there is a little surprise at the end which is not heard on the soundtrack that made me love it even more! I still can't get enough of this show and would even love to see it again. I just heard that Idina Menzel is going to resume the role of Elphaba when the show opens in London in September. Now if only I could convince DH... :rotfl:
