Has anyone else seen this play? DH and I saw it last Thursday and were totally blown away...what a production! The end of the first act gave me goosebumps.

We had not read the book so we went into it pretty cold. But if you get the chance, I highly recommend this play. :thumbsup2

No, I havent', but I want to.... I think it's coming to our town in January? maybe.

It won't be in Columbus, Ohio until next year, I believe. I am definately going to see it.

Does anyone know if my younger boys will like it. They are 12 and 9 right now.

We saw it in San Francisco last year. IT WAS AWESOME!!! I will admit I am a HUGE Wizard of Oz fan. We lucked out and were able to score some tickets last-minute.

I would HIGHLY recommend it! I think your boys would love it.

Your kids will love it. We took DS 12 and DD 10, and a bunch of other friends and family, and everyone had a great time!

The musical is thankfully nothing like the book.

I'm halfway through the book and hating it, but I will force myself to the end. My sis saw the musical and read the book- she loved the musical and didn't like the book. I read so many great reviews about the book- can't imagine what the fuss is.

Most people I've heard from have hated the book, myself included. It was just way too political for my tastes.

My son's theater class saw it at the Kennedy Center in January and my son just raved and raved about it. We bought the soundtrack to it and now I'm hooked too. It's coming to Baltimore in January 2007 and I cannot wait!

I saw it about a month ago in Boston and LOVED it. So much so that I came home and told my grown daughter and friend all about it. They were so disappointed that they didn't get to see it.

Soooooooooooooo I checked with a local travel agent and they have a 1 day trip to NYC(July 8th) from here in NH. Leave early am spend the day in NYC and the come home around 7PM (leave NYC) arrive at midnight or so. Went on line bought 3 tix for the SAT 2pm show and we're going. How fun!

Loved it and you should too!

Just saw it for the 5th time a few weeks ago :teeth: Love love love it!!! :yay:

I read the book a few years ago and I actually really enjoyed it. I'm a huge Wizard of Oz fan and I really like the way Gregory Maguire incorporated small bits of information and characters from the books into the novel, like Boq....which I must say is my major problem with the musical version.....but that's a whole other thread to itself ;)

Ooh, LadyDulcinea1...do tell about Boq.

Seriously, my entire family was BLOWN AWAY by the show. My dad went in to it thinking "eh. We'll see." When we left the theater he asked if I could get him a copy of the CD that night and he listens to it every day. He even bought the making of the musical book off of ebay. It's one of those shows that just sticks with you. It was absolutely worth the money to see it. Now we're working on planning a trip to NYC to see it on Broadway. :)

I have yet to see it, but want to. I love the music for though. I'm trying to plan a trip to NYC sometime this year and I'm going to try and get tickets.

DH and I LOVED LOVED LOVED Wicked.

The first 10 min we were both like What? but then it just got so great.

And DH is quite the critic.

This would be a slight spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen the musical so......

In the original book Boq is a munchkin who's house Dorothy and Toto stay at at the beginning of their journey to the Emerald City. In Maguire's book, Boq is a character who both Galinda and Elphaba meet at Shiz, which is the same in the the musical. However, the musical has Boq basically become Nessarose's servant, being held against his will. When Elphaba enchants Nessa's shoes allowing her to walk, Boq tries to leave, but is stopped by Nessa, who tries to use Elphaba's spellbook to make Boq fall in love with her. However, because she cannot read the archaic spell language, Nessa only succeeds in causing his heart to shrink. To save him Elphaba transforms him into a Tin Man, since then he won't need a heart, therefore completely taking the character of Boq out of the original story by transforming him into another.

The fact that Elphaba (aka the Wicked Witch of the West) is the cause for the creation of the Tin Man is true (she enchants his axe, and the tin smith has to keep replacig his limbs with tin ones, until his whole body is tin), but it always slightly annoys me that the musical completely messes with these character's origins.....ok off my Oz soapbox :teeth:

We saw it in Boston, and it was terrific....if you get a chance to see it, please do. I think you will not be disappointed.

Saw it in Boston a month or so ago....loved it. My dd is 'Wicked' crazed!!! She would kill to see it in NYC...perhaps next year..we'll see.

I haven't seen the musical yet, but I do have the cast recording. We have plans to see it next spring on Broadway, unless good tickets fall in our lap from somewhere. :teeth:

I LOVE the music and the story as I can follow it, both from what I hear and what I've read about the show. I thought I'd love the book, too...

Well, I didn't. I kept reading, waiting for aspects of the musical to kick in. I guess that's maybe why I didn't enjoy it - I wanted it to be something it wasn't ever going to be. :confused3

We saw Wicked on Broadway twice with the original cast. Every cast after that has been amazing. Indina Menzel made me and my dd get chills when she sang Defying Gravity. Kristen Chenowith posed for pictures with my dd as it was her birthday. One of our friends is now touring with the show so we can't wait to see that too. Amazing show and thank goodness it is nothing like the book!

DD saw it last fall in Chicago, with Ana Gasteyer (from SNL!) as Elphaba. Her high school Band and Chorus classes went for a one day trip. She LOVED it!!!

SamRoc, DD is now reading the book, and sayt that it (the book) is very confusing.

She is going to read "Son of a Witch" next!
