My thoughts on the film: We saw it in IMAX because there was no way I was going to see this one on a tiny screen. Nearly every seat in the theatre was full, thus making my little musical theatre heart (and Nicole Kidman) very proud.
Visually stunning. Sets and costumes, yes siree. They killed it. Like many, I questioned the casting of AG. Why? Because we worship The Cheno in my house. We were like, who could fill those size 5.5 shoes? While AG’s performance was stronger than I expected, I still wasn’t fully convinced that she deserved the role. Now Ms. Cynthia, yessss. Girl. No trouble at all with that casting! Everyone in the theatre just waitin’ to hear her sing Defying Gravity. And what a moment that was.
The pacing was oddly slow. I get that as filmmakers they were given the gift of time to tell more of the story with breaking it up into two parts. But at certain points I was like, what in the Stephen Schwartz is going on here? Move the story along please! And I was disappointed in the choreography as well. I love large-scale dance sequences more than life itself and just expected so much more. Applause at the end of the film from the audience, and well deserved it was. Anywho, they got my money and they’ll be getting my money again next year too. No one in our theatre sang along, thank goodness. Pretty sure they’ll come out with a sing-a-long in the theatre version very soon. I mean, just give the people what they want.
