Why would they do this--sports team related?

MATURITY? We have an adult complaining about a child's behavior on this thread and how MATURITY somehow allows you to slam the girl here, while you act friendly to her at the golf course. I don't believe that MATURITY is the correct term. Someone associated with the team should refrain fromjudging or condemning the actions of anyone else associated with that team. It is common sense and good manners.

Actually, since I have this lovely outlet for the "drama" no one has said one word in "real life" to anyone on the team, it wasn't brought up at the tournament, no one talked about it. I had a lovely conversation with this girl about when she leaves for college, what classes she will have freshman year. How much fun it is going up 2 weeks early and having the campus to yourself. See, there is this thing called MATURITY.

If no one has said a word in "real life" to anyone on the team, how do you know how the other parents feel about the whole thing? You keep claiming all the girls are upset, but if you haven't talked about it, how would you know?

This thread may last longer than the girls golf season......

Maybe, doesn't stop me from chiming in though. ;)

I admit I may be way off base, but I remember the thread regarding varsity athletes being brought up from middle school vs varsity spots being reserved solely for upperclassmen. This family was involved in that dispute, and IIRC there were some pretty strong feelings expressed during that mess. I'm also sensing a bit of attitude toward this girl from the OP in this thread:

Side note, not sure how relevant, this is the same girl who's mom kept putting up a stink about our DD playing varsity ahead of her for the past 3 years and now this??? Your scores are what they are and our DD is the #1 player on the team and this girl is #6.

The 3 younger kids are already on the radar for most colleges because they have been on the varsity longer then the seniors (this is their first year playing varsity).

Maybe none of that comes across in person, but maybe it does, and the girl and/or her family has had enough and this is their way of getting back just a bit.

Of course even if that's the case, does it make bailing on the team OK? Not in my opinion, but I can see how it could happen.

So the JV girl shot 100 on day 1, how did the rest of the girls do?

I hope they qualify for the next level of play, even without the partying senior, and I hope JV girl surprises everyone and does better than expected on day 2. :thumbsup2

Thanks for more "second hand" information, that is irrelevant to the conversation anyway.

.

Um, we were there, not second hand information

mumom95--today, no one talked about this TODAY--how do I know the other girls are upset, well, from driving them home from practice and listening to them in the car

Good luck tomorrow!

FWIW, I admire that the girl came to the tournament today (even if she did complain ;)).

I have watched this tread take a life of it's own and commented a couple of times and once again feel some crazy need to interject my opinion again. For what it's worth I really see this as not about golf, high school sports, or any sports vs family commitment. It is about plain and simple commitment. Change the situation completely, the girl is the lead soprano in the HS choir and a state competion interferes with the party. Is that different or are the arguements the same? My point as it has been from the start is were the girls on this team asked for a commitment up front, given dates of regional and state tournaments and asked to commit to the team. If so then her missing the tournament is wrong. If not then hey the chips fall where the chips fall, off you go, no harm, no foul.

People have comment that hey this isn't the olympics, or this isn't pro sports, so whats the big deal? The big deal is not about the trophies, the scholarships, the benifits of golf in your professional lfe, heck it's not even about golf. It's about commitment and honoring those commitments if you make them. So many lessons in life can be learned from commitment. It's something I tried to teach my kids from a very young age. So many problems with society today are from a lack of values and a lack of commitment. Heck every post I have read about the people not paying their mortgages and saying they hope they stay in foreclosure for a while has bashed them saying how wrong that is and that they are crooks and others are paying for their actions. Well guess what? They are essentially failing to live up to their commitment. They bought the house and commited to pay the loan. They took more money out of the houses equity when the value went up and bought toys and took vacations. Now that they can't pay or won't pay is because they are breaking their commitment.

Say what you will but this is not a family vs high school sport issue, it's a commitment issue and if this girl commited and then reniged on that commitment then she is learning a poor lesson in life.

Those are wonderful scores. Kudos to your daughter and the other girls for a good round today. I'm sure your stomach was in knots all day. Best diet I have ever been on was when my daughter played varsity golf last fall...I lost 15 pounds over a 2 months because my stomach was continually in knots ( I was nervous for her because she was the only freshman to play on varsity and though I could feel the weight of the situation I don't know that she fully grasped it!)

Good luck to all of the girls in the next round. Please let us know how they do!

What yardage did they play today by the way?

The scores were ok, they usually do a little better--the 83's are usually 80's and the 89's are usually around 84. They played 5389 yesterday, today it is 58-- (I can't remember which 9's they are playing--they have 27 holes at the course they are playing today). The longer courses are actually somewhat easier for our team because most of the girls hit a pretty long ball off the tee. My DD used her driver on about 4 holes yesterday, she will be able to use her driver on all of the 5's and all but 1 of the 4's because of a dog leg.

The top 3 scores yesterday were 74, 75, 76. There was one 80 and then 4 girls tied for 83. We have the "hardest" section in the state. We have 4 teams that are ranked in the top 12 in state in our section and only one team from each section advances. Out of the 8 sections in state, the team that advances from 5 of them wouldn't make the cut after the first day in our section. It kind of stinks but that is the way it is.

I never thought about using this for weight loss :lmao:. DD is a freshman as well but this is her 3rd season playing Varsity so don't get QUITE as nervous any longer.

Good luck tomorrow!

I also wish you and your DD good luck tomorrow. :goodvibes It's wonderful to come this far. I hope the JV girl "wows" everyone.

Please keep us posted!

If MN is anything like WI, your DD will only have one more year of Varsity before she becomes ineligible. :goodvibes

In most states, you are only eligible to play varsity for 4 years.

I wish your DD luck too golfgal. My son is on the HS golf team & I love following him around while he plays.

Warning....proud Mommy moment ahead: My son placed 13th in the State tounament last fall as a sophmore.

I'm guessing there was a waiver. In MA there are girls playing hockey in 7th/8th grade. And they get to play the whole 5 or 6 years. It was a newer sport and to form a team at the high school they needed girls from the middle schools. That isn't really such a problem anymore but waivers are still given. There is some type of rule about if the middle school is in the same building as the high school. That changes things too. I don't like the waiver thing too much because many schools are using them to their advantage to allow girls that are better a chance to impact the varsity team sooner while they really don't need to do it. It impacts the teams where the AD and coaches don't believe in getting waivers. In theory it should work but I think there are some that take advantage of it.

I've heard it happening for basketball as well in smaller schools. Recently there was a girl out in Springfield, MA that broke a high school scoring record and she starting playing in 7th or 8th grade.

Why the happy huggie smiley for something so negative as becoming ineligible for the varsity team? I'm confused.

Just a guess, but I would wager that Minnesota does not limit eligibility to four years. Some states limit you to four years of eligibility during grades 9-12, in other words if you repeat a high school year you do not get five years of eligibility. However, students who play varsity while in grades 7 and 8 still get their four years of high school eligibility for grades 9-12. I believe New York has this rule, and I would think that MN has something similar. :)

Could be. :)

But a kid in junior high playing varsity to begin with would be a whole 'nother thread. ;)

7-12th graders are eligible for high school sports in MN. You become ineligible when you turn 19, which won't be our case at all-but you see it often with parents that red shirt their kids in kindergarten. Too bad for you, she will be eligible to play all her remaining high school years.

Here's an interesting story about when family & sports intertwine.

Javier Hernandez is playing for the Mexican National Soccer Team in the World Cup. His father, also Javier Hernandez, is the head coach of the Reserve Team for one of the most popular and storied Professional Soccer Teams in all of Mexico, Chivas.

Apparently Chivas officials were not going to let the Dad take time off to go see his son play in the World Cup. So, guess what he did? He quit his position. Is he a quitter? :confused3

Seems like his commitment to his family outweighed his commitment to his job/team. I don't know where everyone falls on this one, since it seems to combine both familial and sports commitments, but it is a nice story.

Interestingly enough, the Mexican team is already mired in a family dispute. One of their young stars is threatening to quit the squad completely in order to support his brother, who was left off of the final squad.

Good for him! Who in their right mind would want to miss such a special moment??
