Why would one buy direct?

Unless someone has to have points right away would it make sense to buy resale and then add on a bit of direct for the points? So if you were to buy 200 points resale for example go back to Disney and buy/wait-list a small 25 point add-on contract to get the perks?

Yes. This is exactly what generally makes sense. Note that the resale points won't ever be usable for cruises or Disney Collection save by renting them out and using the cash, but when you do the small add-on, it's easier to match up UY than if you go direct first, then have to limit your options in the resale market.

ALL the perks don't go away for resale, but right now resale is perfect for guests who are cool with frequently vacationing at the resort where they buy. It's just not so good for trading, and if you have only recent resale contracts you aren't eligible to take part in some offers.

Buying a big contract resale and then a small one direct can help with some of that but not all of it.

IMO this is the new standard. One decides up front what they need, buys resale accordingly minus the 25 up possible and does the add on. Just factor in the additional costs in doing so. Long term the resales will likely be lower enough to make up much of the difference and it'll likely devalue smaller contracts more than the rest.

I wonder if the small 25-50 point contracts will make up a majority of all new sales, versus large, 100-150 point contracts, because of the 4/2016 restrictions.

Doubtful since the majority of their sales will still likely the initial or full sized contracts and current owners were already prone to buying small contracts even if multiple at one time. But the amount/% might increase a little due to this. I still wouldn't be surprised to see the minimum increase or at least increase to get the perks but I suspect it'll take a year or 2 or 3 if that happens.
