Why would amazon require a signature?

I have ordered a bazillion things from amazon over the years. I have never had to sign for anything. I ordered a $30 toy last week (knowing it wouldn't be here for Christmas, no biggie) and UPS did not deliver it today b/c it requires signature confirmation. Why? It's not from a 3rd party seller or anything. It's not an expensive electronic item. We haven't had any theft around here. Why can't they just leave it on my porch like they always do? The thing is I WAS home, but my doorbell doesn't work so I'm sure the guy tried to press it and then just walked away. How aggrevating!!

It may be that Amazon tried to ship it faster and it didn't get there and some kind of priority thing triggered that - or UPS is just bonkers.

I posted a thing in the impressed/not impressed thread about UPS refusing to deliver a package because they needed "more information." It had the exact same information as the three other packages they did deliver. They never tried any way I know of to obtain the mysterious information, just held it for three days and sent it back to Zappos. :confused3

The Zappos rep was trying to find any explanation and said that sometimes during the holidays the regular drivers take over the driving/sorting and the extra holiday workers go run out with packages and sometimes they have an overabundance of caution/rule following.

We had to sign for a purchase from Amazon too - it was a seller from England. The total of the item was $35.

It was TOTALLY inconvenient - due to the very limited hours that our post office is open. (Even had DD "try" to pick it up - and that happened to be the day our PO closes at noon.)

If a signature is required - I much prefer fedex, because then I can redirect the package to a fedex store and pick it up at my convenience - either on my way to or coming home from work. I pass the store at least 2 times a day.

It may be a UPS thing.

Usually UPS dumps my packages on the porch and drive away.

Last year DH's Christmas present from me was spoiled when a temp worker rang the doorbell, handed DH his gift shipped in original packaging, and wanted a signature. I asked why she did that and was told during the holidays, the temp workers are asked to get signatures. I never saw that particular delivery person again.

After that one time, and for all of 2012, I've never had to sign for anything. However, 2 weeks ago my doorbell rang, and I was required to sign for a very small box from Drugstore.com. It didn't require it, but it was the same deal as last year.

I find it odd that expensive electronic items like Ipad, Kindle Fire, etc. were just dumped on the porch, but my Drugstore.com order "needed" a signature.

I've never had a package sent back or taken back to the truck because I wasn't home.

With the increase of package thefts, I would expect this to become the norm. Personally I would much rather have to sign for a package then have my package disappear from my porch.

I don't understand why they don't require signatures for deliveries. I ordered a $500 Canon camera that was left on my front steps. It wasn't scheduled to arrive until the 24th, but came on the 19th. Luckily it was still there when I got home from work. I live on a very busy county road and it could've very easily been picked up.

Agree with this, Also recently I had 3 packages dropped off to 3 different houses on my street. After locating my packages I was pissed that they were sitting on neighbors porches and most people on my block never uses the front door.

After a certain number of packages are stolen in a neighborhood UPS requires a signature for everything in that neighborhood. They just don't want more claims for the neighborhood.
