Why would a LAWYER lie?

LOL...

We get a call today from a lawyer in NYC. He states that my wife was listed as a reference for our ex-SIL. Strange, my wife and the SIL were on bad terms. SIL was a drug addict and alcholic, as well as having been diagnosed as Bi-Polar.

So my wife calls back tonight and the guy who called us isn't there. But The guy who answers the phone tells my wife that the reason for the call was that they wanted to serve SIL a subpoena.

Ok, I know why they lied. But why did they feel the needed to lie?

I find it very common for people to hide and avoid being subpoenaed. The attorney probably didn't want your wife to tip off SIL that she was being subpoenaed.

The experineces that I have had with Lawyers lead me to believe that some of them are snakes in one way or another ....

I edited my Original Post as I was being flamed and did not want to create un-needed controversy. From now I will will make general comments, I would hate for anyone to get offended by others opinions.

Not only is it second nature, it's actually taught in first year of law school.

I would like to state for the record that there is at least one nice, honest lawyer in existence -- my boss. In the 5 years I've worked for him, I've NEVER heard ANYONE have less than a glowing review of him.

Maybe, but that's the first "snake" people run to when they need to slither away from a bad situation. ;)

That's really uncalled for. Why is it that people think it's ok to vilify lawyers? I just don't get it. Most lawyers are upstanding, hard-working members of our communities. Most lawyers are scrupulously honest bc they can lose their license to practice if they are caught. Unfortunately, they often represent lying scum, but that does not call the lawyer's ethics into question. Everyone deserves a lawyer - even the creeps. Speaking as a lawyer (non-practicing) who is married to a lawyer who has dedicated his life to family law issues like child custody & support, spousal abuse & adoption, I find this remark insulting. It makes me wonder why he works so hard when there are people like you out there who harbor these ridiculous beliefs. Let me ask you: do you give up 15% of your income to charity? Because my DH and his colleagues give, on average, about 2000 free hours every year to people who cannot pay. And I should add, your typical "Main Street" lawyer - not the corporate types or the big trial lawyers - the ones who have offices in your small town - are not making all that much money so giving away 15% is a huge sacrifice.

So, if indeed this person who called is actually a lawyer and not a process server, he should be reported to the management of his firm and if they don't seem to care, then to the state bar association. Do not let these kinds of jerks taint the whole profession. Call him out!!

Well, it looks like that AFTER we called back. But when I answered the original call, the guy said he was from XYZ attorneys at law.

I find this comment to be absolutely BS and I am very offended by it. Not only am I married to a lawyer, I have a brother that is a lawyer AND I worked as a paralegal for lawyers for many years before deciding to be a SAHM. My husband would never lie, and either would my brother. Some people never fail to amaze me!!!!

And this comment is about as bad as the above. Believe me, I was engaged to my husband all through law school and you could not be more wrong. Again, .

OK, so a process server lied and said he was a lawyer and everyone bashes the lawyers. Does this make any sense?

Yes, thank you punkin. I was about to say the exact same thing. Just wait till some of you lawyer bashers need one someday, then we'll see how you feel about them!!!

Nope - not a whit.

I'm not a lawyer, not related to a lawyer. But think about it - there's tons of them out there that defend wonderful causes like abused children, rape victims, etc. Come on folks, generalizing that they're all evil is smallminded and total bullcrap.

::yes:: ::yes:: This is exactly what I was thinking. One of my best friends is a lawyer as well as a couple of people we know quite well from church. They are not snakes and I think that even semi-intelligent people should know that the vast majority of them are people who value honesty and the law itself.

Well, how stupid is that statement? If it is second nature, why would they have to waste time teaching it?

So, in fact, he didn't say he was a lawyer, he just said he was with a law firm. Calling him a lawyer in order to tar him as a liar isn't exactly honest.

hahahahaha :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I was kind of suprised how many were quick to respond more sarcastically to my sarcastic post, which kind of floured me.... So I folded a load of laundry and thought aboutthe whole ordeal... Please notice that I edited my original post as I did not intent to creat any un-needed controversy. Its funny how its ok for some to make a generalization about how great lawyers are and can be... as I was doing the same about the bad experiences I have had with Lawyers. Unfortunatly I am not married to one or have a close relationship with many that show me their good intentinions and heartfelt human side. Unfortunatly, for as many great and good deed doing lawyers there are out there, ther are equaly as many nasty corrupt ones. Opinions are like you know what - everyone has got one - like it or lump it.
