Why would a LAWYER lie?

Just think, if the Plaintiff's bar was not looking for cases, your dh's case load would be down, i.e. less work, etc, and a portion of society may not have the ability to seek redress in the Courts.

A lawyer's job is to argue the position of his client as effectively as he can, ethically and legally. Sorry if you do not like the position. It doesn't really matter if the position is offensive to you. The lawyer's job is not to make friends with the public. Quite the opposite, the lawyer's job is to pursue his client's goals, as long as he can ethically and legally do so.

The criminal defense lawyer, those who say these are cheats, etc. above. They may be representing the worst in society, but, they are also representing you. Without their continued work, continued defense of the rights afforded to the citizens in criminal matters, your rights would be erroded. Every time a criminal "gets off" on a technicality, don't blame the lawyer, don't blame the system......thank the system, that places a premium on making sure innocent people do not receive punishment, as opposed to a system that would allow innocent people to be punished, and such would be accepted.

For the "ambulance chasers" why do you hate them? They are representing injured parties. People who have been injured by the fault of others. If there is no fault, the alleged negligent party is not responsible. Do you wan't to take away the right for people to claim that the negligence of others caused them damage. And, who is to say what is a good claim as opposed to the bad claim. I always thought that is what the Court system and the jury was for.

And to the insurance defense lawyers, who look at injuries, and attempt to manipulate the facts in such a way as to lower the damages that their client will pay. Why aren't they singled out as bad guys, since they are attempting to limit the damages that people who are deserving of such are entitled to .

And, as someone said above, you may hate lawyers today, but the lawyer will become your best friend as soon as you need one. Then, when you are done with the lawyer, you will again complain about their service, etc.

Okay, if this is directed at me, let me just say I've been defending lawyers here. I didn't single any lawyer out as a bad guy, I am sticking up for them. I never said I hate ambulance chasers. I never said ANYTHING negative about plaintiff lawyers, except that it is mostly them that do a lot of the advertising. And yes, frankly, I do not care to see the huge billboards or full size ads in phone books. That is my opinion. It does not make what they do wrong or does not make them a bad person.

I used to be (before the kid explosion) a Computer Trainer specializing in Fortune 500 Law Firms. I have met all kinds of lawyers and while there are some snakes they are in about the same ratio as the population as a whole. Like the population most of them are very hard working, interesting and good people just trying to make a living for their families.

As to why the attorney (probably not an attorney btw, but like someone said, a process server) lied it is because you are family and this persons job is to track someone down. They do not usually recieve accurate information if they tell people what it is about.

:confused3 OK OK - I think we are beating a dead horse here... Yes, my initial statement about lawyers was sarcastic, and to some, offensive. I apologized. We have determined that Not all lawyers are bad, some contribute to charity, some are truth tellers and justice seekers and are for the most part good people. That is a generalized statement as was mine. Jay Leno is never funny ... to some. Everyone has different ideas of what is humorous and what is not... Some more are more thin skinned than others. I think that has been decided here. So, I say enough is enough and lets all call it good. Otherwise this thread will go in circles till the cows come home.... (Oh! I am sorry - was that negative toward cows?? ;) ))

Yes I agree, let's let this one die. I'm done with it that's for sure.

LOL...

We get a call today from a lawyer in NYC. He states that my wife was listed as a reference for our ex-SIL. Strange, my wife and the SIL were on bad terms. SIL was a drug addict and alcholic, as well as having been diagnosed as Bi-Polar.

So my wife calls back tonight and the guy who called us isn't there. But The guy who answers the phone tells my wife that the reason for the call was that they wanted to serve SIL a subpoena.

Ok, I know why they lied. But why did they feel the needed to lie?

I've read and reread the original post, nowhere do I see proof that anyone lied,

so the 2 women weren't on good terms that doesn't prove that the sister in law didn't use your wife as a reference at some point in time,

they very well might have gotten your wifes name and number this way,,,,he didn't lie, he simply told you as much as he needed to get your attention{ also known as manuipulating the truth}

they probably wanted to know if your wife was in touch with the sis in law,
so they could find out where to locate her...

Well it WAS a lie... just NOT from a lawyer, as it turns out. My wife and this woman were bitter enemies. It was a lie in that there was no lawyer at all, though I did not know that when I posted. It was a "process server" pretending to be a lawyer.

you said yourself he never said he was a lawyer, therefore no lie....

just because they were enemies does not mean or prove that this woman didn't use your wife as a reference in the hopes that they would never check...it happens all the time, people will use a family member as a reference for credit etc, without asking first...9 times out of 10 references are never checked...

again no proof of a lie...

attorneys, process servers etc, do not neccessarily lie, they just tell the part of the truth that serves their purpose...

not about winning, but working with a dozen or so lawyers, and having many lawyer friends.. I've learned to look for the facts....not make judgement based on feelings or assumptions...

So, now that the vilification is over.

This sick guy goes to the doctor.
I'm afraid you are going to need a brain transplant, he says.
Gee, that sounds expensive, what's it going to cost?
Well, replies the doctor, it depends on the type of donor we use.
A banker's brain costs $1,000 per ounce.
A doctor's brain costs $10,000 per ounce.
A lawyer's brain is $100,000 per ounce.
Wow, says the sick guy. What makes the lawyer's brain so expensive?
Well, says his doctor, you wouldn't believe how many lawyers we have to kill to get one ounce of brain.

Could you please site the reference where you got these figures??

I always see these references to statistics and I believe that are just pulled out of the buttocks.

After all, we know that 97% of statistics offered for proof of a position are made up on the spot.

Or not.

This makes me more curious about your source for your statistics, if they are real or made up on the spot.

Personally, I think you made up the numbers based on feelings and assumptions.
