Why take cash?

I am the same, Julie reckons we will get someone to carry our bags and park the car etc - she can think again.

Maybe it's a 'Nothern thing'? :)

LOL Johnny, you could be right ;)

Tip for your Boardwalk trip then: DH drops me and shopping/luggage off and goes to park whilst I get to wait in the lovely entrance to Boardwalk - there's a giant sofa I just love and it's great for people watching :thumbsup2. Got to say though, when I'm there with my friend instead of DH, we pay up for valet and bell hop services quite happily (whilst DH earns the money at work in blissful ignorance ;) )

Back onto the money. I'm the one with the cash (for which servers everywhere should be grateful :) ) but confess that I have some back-up $50 TCs bought early 2005 when the exchange rate was $1.90 region, and they've travelled back and forth with me each time now.

My DH is also North Yorkshire born and bred, and would never think of letting someone do something he could do himself under normal circumstances. But at WDW, he has learned to truly be on vacation and quite gets into the whole valet and bellman thing. It took me a few trips to get this all worked out with him though. :lmao:

Hey, you can't be that "careful", you're giving the TC company an interest free loan whilst you continue to take money out of your savings accounts for current trips. Very generous of you!

:teeth: I know, I know. I always mean to use them but the cc is just easier. Plus, if you have some currency/TCs, you just have to organise your next trip to spend them right? ;)

Ha ha :rotfl2: I thought that I was the only one! Some of us are just as 'thrifty' this side of the Pennines!!

i'm surprised that america doesn't have the chip and pin as i used my nationwide card in Mexico in feb with chip and pin and no problem.
I hope its ok in us as planning to take the card for the majority of costs!

I posted earlier in this thread that I always take TCs as I'm concerned that my CC gets lost/stolen/damaged. To illustrate this point nicely, I got a call from my bank yesterday evening. Turns out there have been £2000 worth of fraudulent charges posted to my card from all over Europe during the last couple of days. The good news is that their fraud prevention systems rejected them all. The bad news is that they have decided that my card is now "compromised", have closed my account and will issue me with a new card.

However, it will take UP TO TWO WEEKS for the new card to reach me, which leaves me wondering what would I do if I was currently sitting in Orlando relying on the card for spending????? :confused3

So no, it's TCs for me every time...

Hi
just spoken to Nationwide who say the problems is when the retailers have chip and pin system in place but chose to use signiture instead- this way your card will be declined.
She suggested asking if they had chip and pin in place first and if they didn't then using a signiture is fine.
She said a lot of people don't like using their pin either in UK or adroad!
hope this now works
best wishes

Yeah, i'd never go totally without at least £1000 in TCs and cash (combination) for this reason exactly. I'd rather not be reliant on any one source of funds.

when we first visited florida in 2001 my DH was then 34 years old and didn't know how cc's worked (being a total cash man) and only got his first cc because we were going to the states. to cut a long story when we went out to clearwater his card was ripped and about $2000 was charged to it. Needless to say he is reluctant to use his card again and wants to take mostly tc's and cash.
Am I right in saying that the exchange rate is quite favourable at the mo? even though we're not going until april 07 i'm thinking of buying £1000 tc's now and watch the exchange rate - does anybody else do this?
ta v.much.

Just be aware with Nationwide if you use it for more than 2 non pin transactions it will be blocked as per their policy! Even though the US doesn't have Chip and Pin!!! So much for being an international card.

Claire ;)

Both myself and my DW used out Nationwide CCs in Orlando in December with no problems (although we were asked for photo ID). Between us we used the cards 10-20 times.

We did inform Nationwide of our trip - perhaps that makes a difference.

Surely if you use your cards on the internet or over the phone these are non-pin transactions.
