I am wondering what the benefit or reason is to subscribe to a thread. I normally just click on them and read them and post my opinion/response and that's it. I notice alot of people saying "I'm subscribing". What is the reason for this?

Subscribing to a thread gives you the option of receiving an email when there are further posts in that thread. When you click 'subscribe' it comes up with a choice of when it sends an email (immediately/daily/weekly).

You can use this to alert you of when there are new posts or new information. For example, instead of having to keep checking back to see if there has been an answer to this question, if you had subscribed to this thread you could have had an email alerting you to this response and providing a link.

You can also see your subscriptions in your 'User CP' page.

If you reply to a thread, below where you type your response there is an option to subscribe - which is why some people post a response to subscribe. However you can just click on 'Thread Tools' above the post and then 'Subscribe', which means that you do not have to make a post.

I like to subscribe to some threads to follow along with their trip reports or whatever the subject matter might be. If you discover a trip report like "Peter Panic" you really want to follow along. Sometimes you read a thread then go back later to see any updates and you can't find it again.

Also some people dont know about clicking on the subscribe item,a nd want to continue to read if there are more postings but just dont have anything to say.

This way they get the emails sent that there is a new post but dont have to say anything.

Just be careful if you subscribe to a busy thread. You will be overwhelmed with email notifications. I found out the hard way. :rolleyes1

I like refreshing my User CP to see what, if any, replies there are to my subscribed threads. It keeps my email open to important emails instead of thread notifications. You can easily see if your little envelope is opened up, then there are new replies and it takes you to the last unread one.
