For us, we are choosing to stay on site. DD9 has never been there and I have to admit I have never had the chance to stay at Disney either. However I am hoping in the next few years to have all of my kids and their families meet at Disney and then I will look for a house to rent.
I would have to say staying onsite gives us (as a family) a far better holiday. Having done both, I can justify the cost IF something like a free dining plan is offered. For us UK residents there are a few good value deals to be found. Last year we got SSR at 45% off and free dining. Not sure when that'll come around again but I'm hoping it will.
We're planning for 2013 to have a week offsite (cheap and we can see Universal, KSC, beaches, etc) and then 12 nights onsite, to see WDW and also take advantage of the BEAUTIFUL resorts they have to offer. Best of both worlds!
I understand that offsite is far cheaper, but it depends on whether you want the Disney experience or not. For a short trip I would always stay onsite. We don't mind spending more because it is a very special holiday for us and although it might not seem very good value staying onsite, the memories and experiences you get from it are invaluable. Why spend £3000 on flights and then scrimp on accommodation?
When you throw in a free dining plan, it seems even better value. We paid £2000 for a week at SSR and dining and got around £2000 worth of food. So if you get the right deal, onsite is the way to go!
We have a cottage off-site for less than $600 (with tax) for 8 nights in June. Looked at every available on-site option & nothing could touch that. Different timeframe may be another story.
Our last trip in June 2010 and our upcoming trip next year, we've booked a 3BR/2 1/2 Ba townhouse with private pool for $600 (for 7 nights) -- tax included - in Windsor Hills.
Even if you add in parking @ $15 for 4 or 5 days -- that's still a deal (IMO).
But for those of us with that mentality, it is what WE feel. I am sorry but I don't feel the magic off site, if others do that is fine. Sorry if our opinions irritates you. YOu know what they say about opinions don't you?
This kind of applies to our family as well. I could list all of the reasons we like onsite, but the biggest reason of all is our car ride back to our offsite hotel one evening.
My daughter was 4 on her first trip and crying in the backseat after a day at the parks. I was thinking she was just tired from the day, but asked her why she was crying.
Daughter: I'm crying because vacation is over and I like going to Disney.
Me: Honey, vacation isn't over, we're just going back to the hotel.
Daughter: We just went under the big Disney sign, even if we go back tomorrow, vacation still ended for today.
Some people don't want the immersion of the Disney Resorts. To us, it's not quite complete without it.
We like staying onsite (and DH and I did an off-site visit pre-kids) for what many of the pp have said. We like the themes, Disney service, and not feeling like you have left the "world". I LOVE staying onsite. Now that we have done it, my DH agrees. If we had a big family we discussed the FW cabins, or AoA..but it is just the 4 of us, and we love every minute.
