why split stays?

I am just asking this out of sheer nosiness. I see all the time on here that people are doing split stays, but I don't get it. I'm sure there are many reasons people do this, can you guys enlighten me?

We cant choose just one resort -- it's hard enough to narrow it down to two...

We like staying close to the parks to avoid the buses when possible...

It feels like 2 vacations in one...



This really only works if you don't mind packing up and moving, though. It's definitely not for everyone.

Because DVC has so many gorgeous and unique resorts to choose from. This trip were doing the THV and AKV. Can't wait. 5 nights at each. Once we've tried them all we may stay at just one but with 10 nights it will feel like two different vacations in some aspects.

If I can't decide, I split my stay. Sometimes, I just split because I just like staying at two different resort. It's no trouble to move, at least not for us.

There are a lot of different reasons.

-Money, people want to stay at a certain resort but can't afford it for there whole trip
-Availability, especially with DVC you might not be able to get in a certain resort/room type for your whole trip
-Trying different resorts, people might have a favorite resort but they want to try a different one for a couple days
-location, some people do half at MK resorts and half at Epcot resorts so they have less travel time
-DVC, we do different resorts because my parents and myself both own at the BWV's and my sis/BiL own at SSR and we want to be at the same resort so we do half at their resort and half at our resort

I haven't done the split stay thing yet, but I haven't completely rejected the idea either.

For us it will likely be due to our budget for a particular trip. I won't try something if I know it will reduce the length of the trip. ie. I'd like to try concierge level, but I also like to stay at Disney for over a week. If I stay at a Moderate for a week, then switch over to CL at a Deluxe for the last few nights it will give me the best of both worlds.

In addition, we have, so far, had part of our WDW stays with my extended family which adds 5 to our family of 3. So we stay in a 2 bedroom DVC villa with them, then move to a 1 bedroom when they go back home.

We've done it a lot. Always for many reasons. In the past, it was staying moderate for part of the time and then deluxe so we could do that too w/o having to do the expense of the whole time. Also, there are so many wonderful resorts, and if you only get to WDW every 2-4 years, that would take a long time to try all the ones you'd want to, so it's another way to try them faster. This time, we're doing our second triple split. Not because we love moving THAT much (though we don't mind it), but because we won't be back to WDW for 4 years and we wanted to do each of the 3 places, only one of which we've stayed at previously. We would have even skipped that one this time, but it was club level and my oldest DS REALLY wanted to stay there again (our home resort) so we are going to.

So many reasons, and they are all valid. It's not for everyone, but it sure is/was for us.

Dh hates split stays, we did it once to lengthen our trip, but he is not coming on this next trip so we are doing 3 days at BCV and 3 at BLT. We are DVC but for this trip I wanted to experience SAB and I wanted to try BLT. So we split it.

I couldn't kep the trip a surprise, but I didn't spill the beans on how long. So after 5 nights at the poly when we pack our bags to leave I'm then going to drive over to AoA for two more nights. Surprise. And also, two more nights at the AoA room only is cheaper than one more night at the Poly with Deluxe dining.

Our first split stay (2006) was for financial reasons. We had intended to stay 6 nights at YC, but airfare was much higher than we budgeted. To stay within our budget, we switched to 3 nights POR/3 nights YC. It was fun having two resort experiences in one trip, and moving was no problem at all. (I also think that our short stay at YC contributed to our surprise, free upgrade to CL that trip).

Since then, every trip has been a split stay. Last year was a triple split (YC, Windsor Hills, Royal Pacific).

Not me. When I go on vacation, I unpack and relax. I wouldn't want to lose time packing up, moving and etc. Split stays not for everyone

I do split stays a lot...for various reasons. My biggest split stay?? Dec a few years ago. Here's where I stayed, and why....
AKL..one night due to getting a much cheaper airfare
BWV...four nights...my home resort
AKL...two nights..moved there to stay with a friend
Pop...five nights...free dining
BWV...two nights...finish off my stay at my home resort

Yes, it was a wee bit confusing trying to remember where I was heading back to from the parks each day. And I doubt I would ever make that many changes in one stay again. But, there were valid reasons for each one of those stays.

Now??? I like to split up stays that are longer than 6 nights into two stays. Usually split between BWV and another DVC resort.

I am glad to find this thread. I have often wondered why split stays. We have 6 people and usually 2 rooms. It would be too much effort to move....but if it ment blowing the budget and not going I would change rooms every day

If we're there for a week, we love split stays. We try to do one resort closer to the parks and then switch to one further away so we can relax. The resorts are almost as important to us as the parks. We love the different themes and enjoy exploring them. We are spoiled because we are DVC members and always have a washer/dryer in the unit. I pack for the first half. Throw a load in before bed, and when it's dry throw it back into the suitcase. It makes the move day super easy and cuts down on what we need to bring - which is huge for a family of 6 and the cost of checking bags when flying.

The first time we split was CR/Poly as DH and I both wanted to stay for the first time at our dream resorts. His was CR, mine was Poly. We fell in love with CR on that trip and fell out of love with the Poly! After that trip we knew that splitting between an MK resort and an EPCOT resort would probably be the best of both worlds. So, last June, we split between CR and BCV and it was PERFECT!!!

Being able to walk to a park or two is key for us. DH and I love everything about CR and, after a few days, being able to spread out a bit more in a one bedroom at BCV was good for all of us. We love just about everything at the BC/BCV including SAB, Beaches & Cream, the list goes on.

For us, being able to experience two resorts that we totally love made it such a magical trip!

There are some other resorts we'd like to try but we know when we try them they will always be part of a split stay.

This may seem a bit obvious, but I'm curious about split stay booking- do you just make two separate reservations? Is there any way you need to attach the reservations? How exactly do you go about booking a split stay?

Yes, two reservations. So, there is a bit more risk involved. In the event the reservations would need to be changed or canceled close to the travel date, the fees would be x2. That is the only part about a split stay that I don't like!
