Why so many December UY's for sale?

I've been on the lookout for a resale contract and I am noticing a lot of December UY's. Is there a reason for that? (Looking at RIV and VGF). What's the downside to December UY's? I see a perfect contract, but it's Dec UY :(

Also, I've never had two UY's, but my UY is March on my current contracts and I don't see a ton of those on resale sites; would it be a totally separate membership with two UY's?

I have a Dec contract. Anytime I plan a post Thanksgiving /first week Dec trip. I can't book it in one click. If you don't care about traveling then, I don't see a downside.

One of our "wish I'd know better" points of DVC.

It would be two different memberships. Each resorts has a different number of UYs assigned to it

I believe RIV has a larger % of December.

The drawback for Dec UY is that it’s not good for fall travel since you beyond your banking window if you have to cancel and not easy to reschedule if something happens and you need to change your trip.

I'm just guessing that folks know if you're trying to match a UY, you're going to want to put your contract up for sale around the upcoming time that folks want that particular use year. We are September, which seems to be kind of rare, but I did notice a smattering more of those use years in August/September pop up.
I also think December is a popular month to buy direct when on vacation and in the holiday bubble of excitement, so folks probably buy a lot that month direct and then have a lot of contracts to sell later on down the line for resale.

Historically December was the most popular Use Year. See first chart below. At the time of that writing, there were twice as many points for December as any of four other Use Years (March, April, September, October.) And if you dig further into individual resorts, at Animal Kingdom Villas over 30% of the resort's points were assigned to December with February next highest at 14.7%.

More recently, DVC gave itself the ability to re-assign ROFRed points to new Use Years so this data isn't fully accurate. But the percentages also would not change rapidly.

Bottom line: the primary reason there are a lot of December resales because there are a lot of December contracts.

To expound further on what Tim says above, I think that most first-time direct buyers purchase whatever UY DVD is selling at the time. IMHO, it's uncommon for first-time buyers, especially the ones caught by the DVC magic while on vacation, to be at all familiar with the UY concept or the impact it can have on usage, depending on their travel patterns. And there are several posts on these forums from people who were aware and wanted a UY different from the one that was being "pushed" at the time and then had to push back on the guide to get them the UY they wanted. IOW, DVD decides how many contracts are sold in each UY, and it's not at all equally spread out. So December is not so much popular in terms of buyers consciously choosing that UY, it's more DVD's choice to sell that UY more than other UYs.

Ahhh, it all makes more sense now. Thank you! We do like to travel NYE, spring break and summer so december wouldn’t be worst case scenario, I just don’t want to have two memberships to worry about. My guide is trying to scare me into buying now saying “incentives end 11/16 and prices go up 12/4”; this really has no effect on me because I just won’t buy if the price isn’t right, but also may be waiting around awhile for a March UY if I go resale 🙃

Wow that’s interesting! I bought our first BWV contract onsite around 2000 (I think 😬) and it was a Dec use year. Then bought 2 additional BWV add-ons a few years later, matching Dec use year of course. I always wondered why I got Dec (there was no discussion about it and think the sales rep just gave me that).

TBH I never even thought about the fact that it was a bit of a disadvantage for late fall trips until I started reading that in these boards just a few years ago. We’ve never had an issue with a last minute cancellation I guess. Now that our kids our grown I’m perfectly happy with the Dec use year. We live in Boston so prefer early spring trips to get out of the cold. Though I did just add on at VGF this past spring and kept the Dec use year. Didn’t want to deal with different banking dates. And actually just came back from a 4-day October stay at VGF, so don’t rule fall trips out and it’s all good!
