Branch water is pure water from a creek or brook. Used to be the standard mixer with bourbon.

I'm homesick for Williamsburg after seeing your photos!::yes::

I so love the look of W&M College, it was on of the reasons I was glad our one son went to Miami of Ohio. Their campus looks so much like W&M!

Did you visit the Randolph House? I was invited to cook in the fireplace there, but since it was to be in December Bob wouldn't go. He worries too much about snow in the mountain areas! So I missed my chance!

We definitely plan to! I'll be coming to you for advice! :goodvibes

Please do. It will be a great trip for you when Henry gets a little older!

Love the campus of W&M, so beautiful.

The campus was gorgeous. I really enjoyed visiting it.

Gorgeous!!!!!!!!

Thanks! We lucked out with perfect timing!

I had a few friends who went to W&M and I visited them a couple times. It's cool to see your photos from there. :)

I bet it was pretty cool to visit there. Such a beautiful campus and the proximity to the historic district can't be beat!

Hahaha, had to laugh at the little elementary school group! I think in like 4th grade I had a field trip to Jamestown as well. Local! Hahaha. These pictures are bringing back a lot of memories!

I bet every grade school and middle school in a 75 mile district goes there for field trips. It must be a great place to grow up and be so close to so much history!

WOW... those sunset pictures are just beautiful! AMAZING!!! It sounds like yall had such a nice little weekend trip.

Thanks! We lucked out with the sunset pics and we really did have a very nice trip!

Awesome updates, MEK (well, except the school tour groups).

:rotfl2: Why do I have an aversion to school groups. I like kids and they were very well behaved. I guess I have a fear of how they MIGHT behave. :rolleyes1

The sunset pictures are spectacular.

Thank you. timing is everything!;)

Well, I thought that the bridge pictures at William and Mary were amazing...and then I saw those sunset pics. WOW. Those are gorgeous.

Thank you! I wish I had my real camera for the W&M campus, but then I would have looked like a total tourist. As for the sunset pics - pure luck!!!!

I never realized there was so much to do in the Williamsburg area. We will definitely be heading that way in a couple of of years, once Max is just a little bit older. The Jamestown settlement looks really interesting. Fun fact: it was my dream for years to be reenactor at a living history museum. I ended up majoring in history instead! :rotfl:

I definitely think you should visit once Max is a little older.

So cool that you wanted to be an reenactor. You would LOVE colonial Williamsburg. When I went back a few weeks later with my GFs we toured the Capitol building and the Governor's Palace. The reenactors really kept in character. It was really cool!

Great Williamsburg pics!

My MIL went to William and Mary, it really is a pretty campus.

Thanks. I wish I had my regular camera for the campus pics, but "oh well". I bet it was amazing to attend W&M. I wish my younger son could go there but it is very pricey for out of state students.

Beautiful sunset pics.

Thank you! I was so lucky to get the timing just right!:thumbsup2

Great update! Sounds like a great trip (in spite of the 4 hour spiel) and the pictures are lovely :thumbsup2

Thanks and YES - we had a great trip. I'm so glad we got a chance to go back to Williamsburg a second time. It was so much fun despite the 4 hours of torture! :rotfl:

I apologize that it is taking so long for me to get my replies done. I had a bunch done last night but accidently deleted them. I tend to do that when I am tired. I hit the wrong spot on a window and close it my accident. End of replies.

So four Saturdays from today we will be doing our final packing and preparing for our trip to Allentown to see Denny's mom and catch our flight. Something so wrong about driving north to fly south. Not! I'm actually still very excited about trying a new airport, even if it is 2 hours in the WRONG direction!

WOW!! Gorgeous sunset pictures!!

Thank you! You know what they say - timing is everything!!!!!!

That's all so beautiful! I love the W&M campus - I like to roam around Williamsburg and see the sights and shops when we visit DH's family.

I really wish Nick could attend that school. I think his grades and SATs are good enough, but he might not have all the little "extras" that solidify a college application to a highly selective school, not to mention the issue of tuition. :rolleyes1 I'm not a big fan of tons of student loans.

Jamestown Settlement is one of my kids' favorite places to go when we are down there. They could name those three ships! We've had a lot of fun down in that area.

I am very impressed that they would remember the names, because I can't remember them from update to the next! :rotfl:

I think Chincoteague is one place where they have wild horses. DH says they used to see them a lot.

Yes, they do. And on Assateague. We are actually spending a week at the beach this summer and I am considering a kayak tour of Assateague to see the ponies!

That seafood looks yummy too!
Thanks for sharing Williamsburg!

The seafood was delish! I'm glad you enjoyed WB. I have some colonial district pictures that I took a few weeks later when I went with my GF's. I will probably post them at some point too!

Hey, Mary Ellen. I have been trying to catch up. I still have a few pages to go.

Hey Erika! Glad you are catching up. I've been getting behind myself lately!

I too never have really experienced the Italy pavilion. I always say I am going to but we never do. Maybe next time.

Now that they are opening a new wine shop I may have to treat myself to a glass and do some people watching this summer!

I love the bakery in Norway. Your dessert looked yummy.

Those desserts were :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Glad your brother and his family are going. I hope he enjoys it. Family drama can be so much fun. My mother is giving me some right now and I am about to pull my hair out with it.

I really hope he enjoys it too! I think they will. It's going to be tough keeping everyone herded together, but it should produce some fodder for my next TR. :rolleyes1

Sorry you are having issues with your mom. That's always very tough!

Really enjoyed this Williamsburg recap MEK! The sunset pictures were glorious.

Thank you! So glad you enjoyed and I totally lucked out on those sunset shots!

I'm sure he didn't mind. ;)
images

Nope, didn't mind a bit. :rotfl:

Pocahontas and her forest friends!

ETA: the hides of her forest friends.

You have to admit - She DOES look pretty authentic!

No they didn't. But they were terrible shots.
williamtell.gif

:rotfl2:

And stopped there, I hope. :)

Well, now that you mention it! Nah - we didn't want to have to swim to the ferry. The car is so much easier. :rolleyes1

AMAZING SUNSETS!

Thank you! We totally lucked out on the timing. Bonus!

Your Williamsburg area photos are just great! my office is coordinating a tirp to Williamsburg in the fall for a football game against Wm & Mary - I will mention the concert at the Kimmel Theater as a good free time event - it sounds wonderful! That crystal violin was just breathtaking.

It really was very entertaining. If you google Kimmel Center the calendar will come up and you can check and see if he is there that weekend. He does a lot of traveling around the country and I think he mentioned a European tour.

so you "won" a weekend but stayed in a resort that they were not pitching, and the apparently let you stay in the nicer resort? hmm someones marketing person was snoozing on that decision!;)

I guess the timeshare corp - Vacation Village - owns both. Since the Williamsburg plantation is sold out they are now selling a new place. I really do forget the name. I just didn't love the look of the complex, although the rooms were lovely and I did not take any pictures of them because I felt a little weird doing it in front of our guide.

I am chuckling at the class trip photos - DH is chaperoning Katie's 3rd grade class to the Franklin Institute tomorrow. now THAT is scary!:scared1::faint: so I will hear stories tomorrow too.

I love the Franklin Institute. I have seriously not been there since highschool, but I used to love walking through the heart. I wonder if its still there. Not surprising I ended up working in cardiac surgery.

Sounds like your spontaneous ferry & Chincoteague (sorry i know I butchered that spelling) island were great ideas - that dinner looked every bit as yummy as your signature type meal. Love those townie places when you luck out finding one!

The townie bar was so much fun. Really fun. shockingly they could still smoke in there, which was very weird. I used to smoke before I had kids and the smell of that tobacco just took me right back. I am happy the girl we met suggested the other place for dinner. That was fun and that place was hoping on a Tuesday night.

29 days!!!! :rotfl2::rotfl2::banana::banana: (but sad for me because that is when my trip ends)

Don't be sad! At least you are leaving SOON! :cool1:

Sounds like you made some good swaps for October.

I am happy with the October plans because Cynthia is now arriving on the 16th as well, so we will be staying at AKL together and then moving over to VWL.

and I meant to ask you, if your nephews are on the young side would they like a post card from Mickey? I forget how old they are. If you PM (or facebook) me I can send post cards on 6/4 - should arrive by 6/7 or 8. let me know.

That would be so cool. My nephews range in age from 5 to 11, so I think they would get a kick out of that. Thanks. I will pm you if I ever finish these replies. I feel so slow today.

W&M's campus is gorgeous!! It looks like you guys had a great time in Williamsburg - too bad about the tour groups though!

The campus was so lovely! I'm so glad we took a walk through there. I'm not sure what school groups freak me out. The kids were fine, I think I just worry that they won't be. Like the kids on Soarin who were rocking my glider last May. :scared1:

Beautiful sunset and moon pictures!!! :goodvibes

Thank you! Totally lucked out with those pics!

Love the Williamsburg updates! I really need to go back there someday, I love it there! :cool1:

Thanks and Welcome back! I hope you had a great trip and I can't wait to read all about it.

Williamsburg really is a great trip. I highly recommend it for when you need a break from Disney and want to try something new, but something that has tons of things to do.

That college campus is beautiful, it must be amazing to go to school there!

Seriously and those kids all get unlimited entrance into all the buildings of the historic district. So cool!

Ugh, the timeshare presentation sounds...well, long. I'm glad you were honest with the poor guy, it's gotta be difficult to compete with Disney! :thumbsup2

I almost wonder why they don't just exclude you when you already own Disney, but to his credit he kept trying to tell me his product was better, cheaper, and more flexible. :rolleyes1

OMG those beach sunset pictures are AMAZING!!! :yay:

Thanks! We totally lucked out on the timing that night. And to think, I wanted to drive home right after dinner but Denny convinced me to go down to the beach.

ROFLMAO!! That's too precious. Episcopalians (aka Anglicans) are known for their frequent usage of adult beverages :drinking1 hence, the reference to Whiskey-palians. Ain't no grape juice in our communion chalices! And since many Catholics have been known to imbibe as well, we love to play each other in church-league sports 'cause the post game party is always a riot! The Catholic-light is a reference to the many similarities of our worship services. Episcopalians flunked Latin so we're Catholic-light! Oh yeah...and we're sprinklers, not dunkers...no wading pools in our churches! :rotfl2:

Ok, :lmao:, I get it now. It's so obvious. I was looking for a deeper meaning and I even asked Denny if he knew what it meant. Denny usually knows everything because he reads and watches educational TV like crazy. Then I just couldn't get a straight answer when I googled it. I thought it would have its own wiki definition.

Episcopalians flunked Latin - :rotfl2: - Now that's too funny! I think the difference is actually how catholic believes that the host IS the body of Christ, but Episcopalians believe it is a symbol of the body of Christ, There you go - another thing for me to google. :scratchin

I can't believe how great those sunset pictures were! Those are some of the best I've ever seen. Really. What lens did you use? AF or manual setting? WOW! :thumbsup2

I practically always use a manual setting for the shutter speed but I always use the AF on the lens. I'm sure I must have used the 50/250 lens and then I heavily edited the colors. Actually, I have a tendency to overedit colors and I should have left some of them a little lighter. Couldn't help it.

Wow, what a gorgeous finish to the Williamsburg trip! That sunset is spectacular.

Thanks and I am so glad you like the sunset pictures! I feel so lucky to have found such a perfect evening!

We definitely have to tour Williamsburg sometime. Looks like there's a lot to see and do!

I think you and your family would love it there because there is a huge variety of things to do. If you ever plan a trip, let me know and I will hook you up with the guy I rented points from to stay at the Powhatan. I've stayed there twice now and they are upgrading all the TVs to flat screen and the condo layout is great. The rooms are nice. Not Disney nice, but what is? Plus he is very reasonable. I found him on VRBO. The complex even has an adult pool and children's pool and lots of activities and its super close to everything. It's like 3 or 4 miles from Jamestown and not much further to the historic district.

Amazing sunset pictures! Great job!

Thanks! total luck. No skill there. Mother nature did the work!

Branch water is pure water from a creek or brook. Used to be the standard mixer with bourbon.

There is actually creek water that is drinkable? Who knew? :confused3

I'm homesick for Williamsburg after seeing your photos!::yes::

Williamsburg is such a great place and you were so right about the historic district. I bought the ticket several weeks later with my GFs and had a blast. I really look forward to going back there because I still have a lot o things on my list to do!

I so love the look of W&M College, it was on of the reasons I was glad our one son went to Miami of Ohio. Their campus looks so much like W&M!

Someone else on he boards just mentioned that school recently. I'll have to check it out. Intrigued.

Did you visit the Randolph House? I was invited to cook in the fireplace there, but since it was to be in December Bob wouldn't go. He worries too much about snow in the mountain areas! So I missed my chance!

No - on my return visit with the GF's we saw the capital building and the governor's palace. We also saw the shop where they make sterling and shoes. My one GF was in a boot for her foot so we were limited in how much we good do.

Sorry you missed your chance to cook there. I hope you get another opportunity. I would love to go there and see the Christmas lights!

Due to your lovely review of OKW I'll be going in December, do you know if they have internal buses like SSR, or am in for a long hike if I'm not near the Hospitality House?

I think you will love it there, especially with the December decorations.

Honestly, I don't know if there were internal buses, but every bus stops at the HH last so you can get on any park bus and get off at the HH. Shouldn't be a problem except going back. However, there is a bus stop not to far from the HH which is the first, I think, and you could walk there to go back.

Hopefully you requested the HH location because it really WAS convenient. But there is also another big pool with a bar (because hey - what else do you REALLY need) further back in the resort.

Enjoy!

I would have if possible, but they now have hospitality house rooms as a separate booking availability even though they're the same points. And that was not available for the whole trip. After asking you I went in search of a map just to see the layout of the place and there are bus stops in each area. I'm excited :)

Happy Mothers Day! :)

four HOURS! OMG you are both saints for surviving that. Jeff would have gotten ugly at some point, I just know it. The rest of the trip looks absolutely lovely though and that sunset, WOW!

Happy Mother's Day! Four more weeks - that is fantastic. I am so jealous, can't believe it will be 2 years in July since we have been to the World. Longest time ever between visits. We are hoping for October, but will look forward to reading your June report when you return.

Also, love your W&M pictures. No engineering there so neither son looked or is planning to, but I have heard wonderful things about the school.

I didn't know it was a separate booking category. Wait - maybe I did. Let's just say I totally got it by accident. :thumbsup2

Happy Mothers Day! :)

Thanks!

I went into it knowing it was going to be bad and Wilbur really was so nice. It was hard to get angry. I was more fried than anything. I can tell you one thing - if you overload my brain with too much useless info I am never going to buy anything. Nada. Nothing! :rotfl:

Thanks!

Yeah - two years IS a long time. I hope that October works out for you. After my October visit I am going to wait a year before returning. I usually go every 5 - 8 months, but I'm going to take a break for a bit longer. There are some other things I want to do.

Also, love your W&M pictures. No engineering there so neither son looked or is planning to, but I have heard wonderful things about the school.

I noticed that. I think they probably have one of those 3/2 programs which I really wonder about. One article I read said that most kids never do the engineering part. They just finish the original major.

Nick is going to look at University of Md and is now starting to express an interest in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. On a whim I sent his SAT scores there so now he is getting info from them. We are going to one of those open houses this summer.

LOL - we visited University of Delaware last month as Connor is interested. Connor will also be looking at U of MD. Older DS received a nice scholarship to U of MD, they have an excellent engineering program. However, he decided Lehigh as a smaller private university was a better fit.

Maybe we can do a residency exchange if Nick decides on Maryland and Connor decides on Delaware!

U of MD is huge, so that's definitely a consideration. My personal opinion is UD does absolutely nothing to recruit in state students. I guess they don't have to and I find that annoying because they just know they are going to have more than enough Delaware applicants. My friend's daughter is going there. Excellent student and on the pit crew of a robotics team. They didn't offer her any money. I was shocked. I suspect they favor out of state students in the admission process.

I sent Nick's SATs to U o fM and UD and so far only Maryland has sent him emails.

Seriously - wouldn't that be great! Wouldn't it be funny if they end up picking the same school. You never know.

Final Thoughts

Well Everyone - I want to thank you all for sticking with me through three trip reports in one. It’s been fun. I can’t believe it is the middle of May and I am finally bringing this to a close.

So, my final thoughts... Her goes........

Resort:

This was my first stay at OKW and, overall, I really liked this resort. For this trip it was actually the perfect choice because the larger studio made it so we didn’t feel like we were sleeping on top of Nick. I felt we were comfortably far apart and that was definitely a plus. I look forward to a time when Denny and I can go back alone and splurge on a 1 BR. Denny isn’t a big splurge person, but I think I can talk him into a one BR here because the points are the lowest.

I really enjoyed the landscaping here. I loved being so close to the hospitality house and I REALLY LOVED the laid back feel to this resort. That was the thing that really drew me in. People there were truly on vacation. They were there to relax, not obsess over the best room location or the best view or the other small details that people spend too much time worrying about. They were there to enjoy. Pure and Simple!

I also noted that this resort had more disabled people working as cast members than I have seen at other resorts. I found the young CM with Down’s syndrome, who was working at the gift shop, to be an absolute delight. It makes me wonder how she would fair in the much less laid back world of the Grand Floridian.

The Gurgling Suitcase was a nice throw back to a quieter, gentler time when a small hole-in-the- wall bar was a place that made everyone happy. The pool area was fabulous and the hot tub was huge. Definitely one of the nicer pool complexes I have enjoyed!

Dining:

I often hear people say they think the quality of Disney Dining has decreased. I sort of felt that way. Normally I am pretty wowed and pleased with the food I eat at Disney, but this time a lot of it just didn’t knock my socks off. I think I was expecting too much, which happens when you have eaten at so many of the Disney restaurants.

My favorite food items were the fried green beans at Yak & Yeti, Denny’s fish at LLT, and the California Roll and Flatbread at the Cali Grill. Yak and Yeti was a new restaurant for us. I think I picked a bad time to dine there since we weren’t doing a dining plan and they don’t take TIW. I got some type of AP or DVC discount, but is was only worth about $7 of a 90 plus dollar bill. I will go back there for drinks and more greenbeans! Heaven on a plate.

My TIW paid for itself and I think between the four meals where it was used (LTT, La Hacieda, Cali Grill, and Artist Point) I probably even saved some dinero. I’ll be honest with you – I didn’t track it all that well. The good thing is I get to use it again in June and October. I am going to make more of an effort to try bars that take it and I want to pay attention to the savings a bit better.

Drinks (as in Alcohol):

My favorite drink was the Turtle Crawl with the Avocado rita and the Lost on Safari coming in at a close second. I strongly recommend a turtle crawl, should you get the chance to visit OKW. In fact, I wouldn’t mind taking a run over to OKW for another one this summer. BTW – there is plenty of parking near the Hospitality House.

Crowds:

The crowds seem to have gotten heavier as the days passed, which would make sense since we were leaving in almost peak Christmas season. However, the crowds never bothered me, probably because the weather was so great.

Weather:

Although it was cloudy about 50% of the time, I would still consider it near perfect weather. There was only one morning where I was a little cool. I love December weather. It made it possible for me to stay outside much longer than I normally would or could in the heat. I am happy we missed the rain deluges of the previous weekend. Sorry Jen (Nermel).

Christmas Season:

This is the third time I have visited Disney and have seen the Christmas decorations. To me, they were better than ever. I enjoyed all the lovely details and I can’t wait to visit during Christmas season again. The only down side was I do not like traveling this late in December. Oh, don’t get me wrong. It was perfect while we were there, but reentry was hard. REALLY hard. This is a hard time of year to leave the Disney bubble. I felt like I just mopped around for the next several days. I was so sad to be home and away from the festivities. I really didn’t cheer up until Christmas eve and that’s because I was involved in the Christmas festivities at our church. I remember doing the music for the Christmas eve services, with all these wonderful young and not so young musicians helping me, and I was so in the spirit that the funk finally lifted.

This was my second later season pre Christmas trip. I told myself the first time that I would never do it again, but that was because I was woefully behind in getting decorated for Christmas and had to do it all when I got home. This time I had decorated super early, so I didn’t have that excuse. It didn’t matter, I still felt rushed and out of sorts being so close to Christmas. I think I either need to go in early January or late November. Too close to Christmas throws me for a loop.

Negative Experiences:

Thankfully there were very few. The first that comes to mind was the unfortunate incident in the phone booth in England. I really don’t care for random strangers accusing me of being drunk in the middle of the day. (not that this has NEVER happened, but you know) Not very magical.

The second was coming home to a mess in my house. That just added to my pre Christmas funk.

The third is something I didn’t even mention. For those of you that have DSLRs you know how your lens cap fits on that small rim around the lens. I guess many cameras are like this now, not just DSLRs. Anyway – I must have put my camera in my bag with the cap of the distance lens not on properly. Then something must have lain on top of the lens because that little ridge broke. I got super glue and tried to glue to back on, but there was still a piece missing. The long and short of it is, my lens cap will never be secure again and its going to be such a pain to have that thing falling off all over Disney world this summer. I am going to have to keep a hand on it when its not in the bag. Bummer, yet I have only myself to blame for not being careful enough.

So that's its. My final thoughts, but before I close this update I do have some more Williamsburg pictures to show you.

Wait,.......Are you getting tired of Williamsburg Yet?????? Good, I didn't think so.

I took the rest of these on my girls trip. I went back with 3 of my GF's the weekend of April 21st and we stayed at the Powhatan for two nights. We had a blast.

For dinner we decided to go back to Merchant Square and order sandwiches from the Cheese shop. They also had wine to go. Perfect!

The next morning we woke to rain - Lots of it!!!! At my suggestion we toured the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Museum.

This was also a little area designated to a old mental hospital.

One more update after this - Future Trips!

Those red solo "cups" are so cool. Everyone needs one of those I think. Then, you can say you drink out of a red solo cup, but you're still classy. :rotfl:

I'm glad you enjoyed OKW overall. I agree, the one thing I love about it is the fact that the studios are so roomy. And I'm cheap too! We very rarely splurge on anything bigger than a studio.

Can't wait to hear about the upcoming trips! I can't believe you're leaving so soon already.

I know - for the rest of the weekend I kept walking around saying......"Red Solo Cuuuuuuup". Believe me, I was tempted to get one.:rotfl:

I'm sure I will stay there again in the future. I especially loved the Christmas theming! Great place!

I've got a few up my sleeve. Nothing quite as exciting as Europe, but fun none the less!
