In Kentucky it's bourbon, don't say whisky! :thumbsup2

We stopped at the Jim Beam place a couple of years ago. It was great, the best thing was the free bourbon tasting. We were offered tastings of three differnt bourbons including their best! It was pretty good even though it was only 10 am!:cool1:

I know I already said it over on FB...but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Cool Williamsburg update. You seem to have gotten a great weekend, weather-wise and you took some gorgeous pictures. Spring really seems to make everything better, doesn't it?

I'm enjoying hearing about your trip to Williamsburg! Cool stuff so far! Since I'm pretty much (sadly) clueless about Williamsburg, it's cool to hear about your experiences. :goodvibes

I couldn't post the photo on Facebook, so I'll wish you a Happy Birthday again so I can post my photo.

Wow...what a fabulous place Williamsburg is! So much history there....I love the old buildings and the guides dressed in period costumes! That wine tasting sounds quite delicious oh and that meal....yum!

Sorry for the delays in getting to replies. I got tied up with some stuff on Sunday night and last night I spent all evening downloading video to my mac. First I couldn't get the camera to download. Then I ended up with 3 - 4 copies of each little segment of film. What a mess. Then we watched the Hangover Part 2 - that was freaking hysterical, although a tad raunchy in parts. :rotfl:

I know this is old news since you booked your flight already but somehow I now HATE to pay for the luggage. Just a pet peeve. So yeah I proably would pay a little more for a touchdown just to fly SW.

But it all worked out and you will be fine. :

I totally hate to pay for luggage, so that's why I prefer SWA. Even if its the same price paying for luggage I rather take SWA. I am satisfied with my flights and prices. :goodvibes Once I was able to rebook the first part of the trip it was a no-brainer to just book their return flight with the credit.

Ahhh Spartanburg SC, my new Favorite town..... Love flying SW out of there even though I have to RIGHT BY the Charlotte Airport to get there. :rolleyes1

Hate the luggage fees. Love SWA.:

I know what you mean. I actually to prefer to fly out of BWI even though Philadelphia is closer. I just like the airport better.

Great Williamsburg update. Good for you on the timeshare NO but if I ever get in that situation I probably would set my watch alarm to go off at 90 min and make no secret of it. :rotfl2:
RUDE - yes but I have no tolerance for the hard sell and then the tactics they use to try to get you to buy. :furious:

As soon as he took us for the "joy ride" I knew we were in for a long morning. The problem is, he lost me after the third hour and by then I am not buying anything. There is such a thing as "overkill".

Beautiful Williamsburg pictures! How fun that you were able to do a wine tasting while you were there. I love all of the ribbons around the bottles.

There are actually two other wineries close to Williamsburg that do tastings. I went to a second one a few weeks ago with my GF's and it was gorgeous there. I think wine tasting is going to be one of my new past times. I can't wait to do more.

Your meal looks awesome! Goat cheese ice cream...that definitely sounds interesting!

The ice cream has a thicker consistency and definitely was not as sweet. It was the perfect compliment to the rest of the dessert.

Loved seeing the historical buildings, so cool to think how long they've been there and who walked the same streets/area that you did. Beautiful pictures as always.

I really think everyone should visit Williamsburg once. It really is the founding of our nation and all the attractions are done really well. I look forward to my next trip there.

I think I would have been teeming at the 3 hour point let alone 4 hours  Denny is too kind not wanting you to bad mouth them.

Denny actually had an interest in this timeshare and if I had pushed for it, I'm sure we would have bought it. But at the 3 hour mark it all just turned into one giant blur to me. I couldn't process anything because I had been fed too much extraneous information. :offtopic:

That concert sounds wonderful. I'll definitely look him up when I get home.

It was really, really interesting, especially the glass armonica. Very cool stuff.

glad you were able to add a night to your October trip, that'll be nice. :)

I was going to stay at AoA for the extra night, but since I canceled a night in June it just makes more sense to add it back in October. ::yes::

All right! You got to see the Crystal Concert! I was thinking I recommended it to you and had to look back through my posts to be sure. It's amazing isn't it?! :)

the Crystal Concert was really wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I knew it was a "must-see" with all the wonderful endorsements I read. So, thank you for recommending it! :thumbsup2

Your 4 hour timeshare thing sounds like what we endured at the Vistana in Orlando. It's funny (not really) how they can stretch 90 minutes into 4 hours.

They take you out on two extra drives - that's how. OMG, when were we done I was so fried I just wanted to :faint: Never again!

Those pictures of Berkley were very nice, but the outfit on that tour guide was atrocious!!!:scared1: That is such a peeve of mine. :furious: If the guides aren't going to dress in a correct manner, then they should just wear polo shirts.

Well, I am sure the vast majority of people have no idea whether the guide is dressed correctly or not. I thought the man looked funny because his shirt barely covered his beer belly and he was practically wheezing walking up the steps. I was waiting for him to drop. I think he was counting the minutes until he could have another one of these - :smokin:

I like how the time share people want to drive you so that they can sort of keep you prisoner. Just sayin'.:rolleyes1.

I am SO glad I knew they were going to keep us prisoner. But still, two drives was too many. It was just way too long and I liked the guy so I didn't want to be rude. I just think he needs to rework his plan somewhat.

There is a night life, after all Williamsburg is a college town, but it's mostly on the weekends & not in the historical district.

I know the historic district closes up early, but I am curious as to what part of the city actually has bars. I feel like we drove around a lot and really didn't see much. When we got back to our condo the parking lots were completely full and it was only 9 or 9:30pm.

A fun thing in the historical area is to do the Gambols at Chowning's Tavern in the evening. Lots of fun.

I saw that place on our girls trip and it did look pretty cool. We almost had lunch there but ended up going to the King's Arm Tavern instead. Next time!

:faint: All caught up! :faint:

Yeah!!!!!!! :cool1: Thanks for stopping by. Hope you had an awesome trip!

I
LOVE all of your first & favorites! By the time I get to the end of a TR I never feel like doing that so I really appreciate the effort it took to pull that together. :thumbsup2 Maybe I could finish off a TR like that if I write the last update as I write the whole TR. :confused3 Anyways... thanks for sharing your trip with us!

So glad you liked the firsts and favorites. I actually do much better going back a second time. I'm not sure why, but it goes smoother for me. I don't get hung up in all the details and just let the pictures do the talking!

Your June trip is right around the corner... I can't believe it's all coming together with your brother & family! :thumbsup2

So excited. It's about 31 days now!!!!!!!:cool1: And it really IS all coming together. :worship:

And you gave us a bonus Williamsburg update to boot! :goodvibes

You know - I love Williamsburg. To me it is the Disney of historical attractions!

Four hours! Yikes! But, it didn't sound too bad in all...at least you got to see some sites and weren't stuck in a little office the entire time.

I would have died if I had been stuck in the same building all that time. :faint: It really was pretty tolerable until we got to the last hour and then I was just ...done!

I LOVE your pictures of the plantation...what beautiful buildings and property!!

It was gorgeous. I know you just did the DC thing, but if you ever get a chance to visit Williamsburg and the surrounding area - do it. It's very cool!

Looks like a (mostly) great trip so far! I can't believe the timeshare thing took 4 hours!!! Yikes! I didn't really figure they would finish within 90 minutes, but that's a little extreme.
The tours look great, and I would love to have seen that Crystal Concert! How interesting, all the different instruments!

4 hours was totally uncool. I figured it would turn into 2.5 - 3 hours, but I never dreamed it would be 4 :faint:

The CC was so interesting and the music was absolutely beautiful. It has such an interesting sound.

Looks like a fun weekend in Williamsburg...aside from the 4 hours you'll never get back. :sad2:

Yup - In fact I kept joking with Denny that I lost 4 hours I would never get back. I'm actually proud of myself for getting through it, but I won't do that again anytime soon.

In Kentucky it's bourbon, don't say whisky! :thumbsup2

Oops. Good to Know! :rotfl:

We stopped at the Jim Beam place a couple of years ago. It was great, the best thing was the free bourbon tasting. We were offered tastings of three differnt bourbons including their best! It was pretty good even though it was only 10 am!:cool1:

10 am! :faint: I have new respect for you Doris! :worship: I would love to do a tour that like. I just that type of thing is so fascinating! Totally on my bucket list!

I know I already said it over on FB...but HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Thanks Tina!!!!!!!

Cool Williamsburg update. You seem to have gotten a great weekend, weather-wise and you took some gorgeous pictures. Spring really seems to make everything better, doesn't it?

Spring totally makes everything better and we really had gorgeous weather. When I returned a few weeks later with my GFs it was even better! On Saturday it was 85 and we actually sat by the pool.

birthday? why didn't you say? HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Thanks Pam! :goodvibes It was a fun day!

I'm enjoying hearing about your trip to Williamsburg! Cool stuff so far! Since I'm pretty much (sadly) clueless about Williamsburg, it's cool to hear about your experiences. :goodvibes

Isn't it funny how you tend to forget about attractions that are close to your house. If you like history, check it out. It really is a very, very cool place. I know I keep saying this but it really is the Disney of history.

OH! And apparently birthday wishes are in order as well! Hope you've had a great one! pixiedust:

Thanks! I had a very nice, quiet birthday and I really enjoyed it! :goodvibes

I couldn't post the photo on Facebook, so I'll wish you a Happy Birthday again so I can post my photo.

eeyore-2.jpg

When I saw this post today at work I was dying to know what the picture was! You know I LOVE Eeyore! He is totally my favorite! Thanks!

Does this count as late if I was on time on FB??? HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I hope you had an absolutely fantastic day!!!:banana::banana:

Thanks! I had a really nice day. Denny and Nick gave me flowers and Brian called me twice to say Happy Bday!

Happy Birthday!! Sorry if it's a little belated! I hope you had a great day!

Thank you. I really did have a great day. In addition to getting two really pretty plants Denny bought this delish strawberry shortcake. Hmmm - so good!

Wow...what a fabulous place Williamsburg is! So much history there....I love the old buildings and the guides dressed in period costumes! That wine tasting sounds quite delicious oh and that meal....yum!

The history is really amazing. It is so interesting to hear and see the stories of how the United States was started. I can't imagine what bravery the first settlers had. Amazing.

Our dinner was fabulous and I always enjoy a good wine tasting! :goodvibes

Thanks for the respect! :rotfl2: That was really good bourbon, they give you more than a shot. It is served in a short tumbler & tou can drink it neat or with branch water. So good!:cool1:

I realize most people don't know what is right or wrong with the costuming, but it sends them away with the wrong picture in their mind. The official Williamsburg sites are right, but the taverns are managed by outside vendors, so the costuming is not good.

I do so need to get back to Williamsburg, I miss it a lot!:lovestruc

What is branch water? So many things about Bourbon that I just don't know! :rotfl2: What an education!

I really got the impression that the colonial district enactors tried to be as accurate as possible. I didn't buy the ticket when Denny and I went, but I did buy it when I went with my GF's and I had a blast. I will definitely buy it again the next time I go. Really immersive stuff. I didn't even notice the costuming of the wait staff at King's Arm.

I missed your birthday:faint: I hope it was as special as you are! Sorry this is late....:worried:

Aww - thanks friend! I am always missing people's birthdays. I really appreciate the shout - out!!!!!!

I do so need to get back to Williamsburg, I miss it a lot!:lovestruc

Williamsburg Part 2

Its about 1 month until we leave on our June trip. June 9th is the day! So I really would like to finish this TR. Hopefully I can wrap up W-burg in one update. Then I have an update prepared for final thoughts as well as future plans.

So, on with the show. When I left off last week we had just seen the Crystal Concert. It was about 2:30 now so we set off to do the "free" things near and in the historic district.

The first stop was the Wren Building at the College of William & Mary. This is the oldest college building in the USA. They actually still have classes on the upper floor, but the bottom floor is for visitors and it is staffed by a college student.

The Wren building is right across the street from Merchant's Square which is at the end of the historic district.

On the way to the Wren Building

Here is some info about the College of William & Mary, if you are so inclined.

This is a public institution and the tuition for VA residents is actually not crazy expensive, but the room and board is on the high side. However, the tuition for out of state students is 3X that of in state students. None the less, it is a beautiful campus and very large for only 6000 plus students.

In the corner of the picture is the nice student who gave us our tour. He is a Religious studies major.

After our time back in college we went back to the Colonial District and toured the Bruton Parish Church.

This is an Episcopal church right in the Historic District that is still an actuall parish. You can tour for free. I think they ask for a donation when you walk in.

We really wanted to find a bar, just a bar, near the historic district and Merchant's square but we came up empty.

What I didn't know then, but know now, is that we could have gone into the Cheese Shop, which is right next to Fat Canary, and ordered wine by the glass and brought it outside to sit at the table. The selections were limited to house wines, but it would have done the trick.

Instead, we went back to the car and drove to a place called "New Town". We saw a bar/restaurant in there and they were having a special. All their bottled microbrews were $3.

f4863d5c.jpg

So we ordered a couple beers and even though it was still on the early side (5pm maybe) we decided to order a couple burgers because they had a 1/2 price special. So we basically each had a nice size burger and two microbrews a piece for about $20. Quite the bargain after our previous evening.

We entertained the thoughts of hitting the outlets but ultimately decided to go back to the room, watch TV, and go to bed early. I think I fell asleep on the coach by 8pm.

Here's my yummy burger with sweet potato fries. I love sweet potato fries!

Tuesday April 3, 2012

Since I was in bed by about 9:30pm I was up pretty early today. I tried to watch some TV in the bedroom (after I woke up the first time), but I just couldn't keep my eyes open. I guess that timeshare presentation wore me out! :faint:

I went for a run but it was pretty cool this morning and I was actually cold. BRRRRRRRR!

The picture of your dinner didn't get posted. Sounds like a nice find though.

Our plan today........

The Jamestown Settlement

Fountains at the Entrance

IMG_2192.jpg

IMG_2193.jpg

This is the hall than runs along the museum portion of the building. It is divided into 10 year sections.

We decided to go outside first because we heard there was a tour getting ready to start. When we got outside we saw this.

IMG_2195.jpg

Queue scary music here!!!!!!!!!!

School Kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :scared1:

I remembered it was Tuesday, it was spring, and we were about to encounter school field trips - Lots of them! Oh brother!

Denny and I decided not to wait for the tour. We set off by ourselves.

We were about to explore a Powhatan Indian reservation.

IMG_2200.jpg

IMG_2201.jpg

IMG_2202.jpg

IMG_2203.jpg

IMG_2250.jpg

I had a little trouble believing that the Powhatan Indians wore glasses

IMG_2205.jpg

IMG_2207.jpg

Canoe

IMG_2211.jpg

We didn't spend a lot of time with the Powhatan Indians because the school kids quickly started to descend upon us.

We walked down to the river. This is a view through the trees of the James River Ferry

IMG_2214.jpg

When we got to the boat replicas it was obvious that some school groups had beat us there. Figures!

IMG_2216.jpg

We kept on walking to the end of the pier

IMG_2218.jpg

A lot of learning going on here....

IMG_2219.jpg

Here is the voyage and arrival to Virginia

IMG_2221.jpg

The three boats

IMG_2249.jpg

They had a kid helping to do this

IMG_2224.jpg

IMG_2225.jpg

The smallest of the boats had no visitors so Denny and I went on

IMG_2229.jpg

Denny struck up a lengthy conversation with this gentleman, a retired lawyer from DC, a sailor, and a reenactor.

IMG_2230.jpg

He told us that the boats actually do get sailed periodically. When they do sail its only for a couple weeks at a time. The ship replicas are actually one of the biggest draws for the settlement.

Artsy shot

Hey - look - there's the ferry!

Such a beautiful campus...especially the site above.

This is an Episcopal church right in the Historic District that is still an actuall parish.

da505f8b.jpg
It was a common practice in the 1700's for families to donate extra to have their name on a specific pew that was reserved for them each meeting day. If they did not show up that day, the pew remained empty. The Episcopal church in Alexandria, VA, Christ Church, still has reserved pews for George Washington and Robert E Lee. Gotta love those Whiskeypalians. Anytime you get 4 together, you're bound to find a fifth! I know...I am one! :thumbsup2

IMG_2241.jpg

We went back inside to watch the movie. This movie was actually really good and a little sad because it told the story of the first settlers. What brave people. All I can say is WOW!

I wasn't allowed to take pictures in the museum but I took some in the main hall.

Sorry - I skipped a few years!

I took this picture with no flash through the glass so technically I didn't take any pictures "inside" the museum.

IMG_2265.jpg

IMG_2267.jpg

After we throughly explored the museum we decided to leave.

Bye JS

IMG_2268.jpg

IMG_2269.jpg

Another view of the fountains and flags on the way out.

IMG_2271.jpg

IMG_2272.jpg

There was a state flag for every state.

IMG_2277.jpg

IMG_2273.jpg

They have a plaque like this for every state.

IMG_2275.jpg

If you ever go visit the Jamestown Settlement remember that if you save your receipt you can add on the Yorktown Victory Center for another $4 a person. Cost for the JS $16.

Here's where we made a spontaneous decision. We really weren't sure what we were going to do next. I was going to suggest starting the drive home via Yorktown, but Denny really wanted to cause that James River ferry. After all, it IS free.

So we got on as the last car
