Why not buy an IPad?

I see a lot of people talking about buying different brands of Tablets for Christmas gifts. I had always thought that the Apple Ipad was the best and offered the most features and compatibility with other components. Why would someone buy a different brand? Are there other tablets out there that are just as good or better for less money? :coffee:

The reason is based on what you want to use it for. Some people are vested in the Android platform (cell phones etc) and some people in Apple. Your best bet is to look through both app stores and see what apps you want more and go with that one. I personally am too far engrossed in the apple platform to change over to android.

I did however buy a nexus 7 tablet just to mess around with and this thing is pretty awesome. I will be selling it however as my wife wants her own iPad.

Yes. I love my google nexus. It's a great powerful tablet for 1/3 the price of an Ipad. huge screen, fast processor love it.

I don't need all the apps the apple offers so no need for me to pay for them.

I always wonder that as well when I see commercials etc for phones other than iPhone. However, I do know a few people who are simply anti-apple for whatever reason.
For us, once we went apple we will never go back!

I love the droid platform. I do have an ipod, but HATE HATE HATE itunes so I've never had any interest in buying any other apple product.

My droid phone had 2x the power and a better camera than the iphone at the time for 1/2 the price. I can't see why you wouldn't buy droid products.

I think the biggest reason people are anti-Apple is mostly the price.
There are certainly phones and tablets and computers that are every bit as good as the Apple products for lower prices.

Apple just has this culture about it with people insisting they will NEVER, EVER leave. There's no arguing with that kind of mindset. If somebody feels that kind of fervor about their devices, they certainly aren't interested in hearing about the Google Nexus tablets or the Samsung III phones or whatever.

I love my iPads however my 17 year old DD lives her Android tablet.
I did play with hers and the processor is faster and the video camera and flash camera are awesome. Those are the things she was looking for. And Android gave her those things before we had them in the iPads.
To each their own.

Lots of different reasons. I don't like iTunes, so I bought an Android phone. Now I've done most of my music purchasing through Amazon, and I have bought a lot of apps for my Android phone through the Amazon android store - I can install those on my Kindle Fire without having to purchase them again through iTunes. I liked the size of the Kindle Fire better (there was no iPad Mini when I bought mine.) Also, I tend to use my Kindle primarily for reading, so something that was geared towards reading that ALSO allowed me to do other stuff was more what I was looking for than a tablet that ALSO could be used for reading.

Plus, as others have said, my Kindle Fire was $199 when iPads were much more, and far too big (if you ask me) to carry around on a daily basis. My Kindle Fire, in it's hard case, fits in my purse.

One of the reasons I moved to Apple products was I was tired of the constant virus issues and failures with the PC based products. Both my children use Apple computers in school and are very familiar with them. We have Ipods, iPad, I have an Iphone, Macbook and iMac computer. Yes, the cost is a little higher. I find the Apple products easier to use. Did I mention the computer virus issue.

With that said, extended family use Android phones and PC based products. They prefer the lower cost and are familiar with their use. I will say that my Imac is still working well, no viruses (or virus protection software) and they have all had to replace their computers at least once. In my opinion, the Apple products are made better and I don't mind paying a little more for the quality. Just my opinion and I'm sure others feel differently.

Yes, and that is why some people wouldn't buy an Ipad.

For me it was matter of money and ease of finding software for computer. I grew up with Apple, had apple computer at home and school back in dino ages, I took my college computer class on a Mac.
But for some reason when it came time to buy a computer I bought a HP.

I do own an Ipad and in that arena I do think it was right choice for me. I am buying an Ipod as I've had an mp3 player that was piece of trash and FAR from user friendly. My Dh's Mp3 player is better but still not easies thing to use.
My phone is android and I love it, I chose that phone over iphone for cost reasons free vs 200.00 times 3 phones.

I have friends who prefer PC and Android for their tablets/phones/computers.

Just personal preference.

We love our Apples now! I won't ever go back.

For me it was price. I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and I love it, does what I need/want it to and it was much cheaper than an Ipad.

For me it is price and the product. I love  Apple laptops. I have an Air 13" right now. However when we talked about buying DD an IPad, I could not stomach the $500+ price tag for something I wasn't sure she would use, So I was lucky enough to get her an HP Touchpad during their fire sale last year. It's a great little tablet, but I did not really like the WebOS operating system, so I installed the Android port for it. It works great and it only cost me $100.

As for phones, I also have an Android. The biggest reason is because I got my first when iPhones were only available on AT&T. Now I am quite use to the Android. Also, I do not like how restrictive Apple is with their phones. If I'm spending hundreds of dollars on a phone I should be able to install whatever I want and not worry about if it is "Apple sanctioned".

I have a Windows laptop, an iPhone and an android tablet so I've pretty much got all the bases covered!

I bought the android tablet because I wanted a tablet with a usb connection and because there is almost nothing I loathe more than iTunes. I use my tablet for watching tv and movies and having the ability to download on my laptop and copying over to the tablet easily was important. It was also half the price.

The only ways that I find my husband's iPad superior to my android is weight and battery life.

We bought a Google Nexxus tablet because it cost less than half of what the iPad cost.and we aren't beholden to ITunes to purchase content. We also like the fact that the Google Tablet is smaller and lighter than the IPad (and thus easier to use on the go -- and other than the iPad, the industry standard is the 7" tablet)

Many of the other bands also allow you to add more memory via SD memory card, which the iPad does not.

For full disclosure, my DH despises Apple. He has an Android phone and the Google Tablet. He also has a work provided iPad, which he never uses (the kids use it). He is able to use all the apps for his phone with the Google Nexxus Tablet, so he didn't have to repurchase them. I have an iPhone and a Nook Tablet, which I use primarily for reading.

I say to each his own. Do the research and buy what is best for you. We are an Apple family. As others have said I love the fact that viruses are few and far between. All my devices sync. I have calendars set up so they show on my Phone, computer, and IPad. I don't have to transfer pictures if I don't want . They are set to automatically sync. As far as flash goes well it is on it's way out on all devices. Last but not least Apple customer service is outstanding. Walk into any Apple store and they are more than happy to help. Thats my 2 cents

I love my iPad and bought it because I love how user friendly iTunes is and how easy it was for me to set up my iPod, I have a Zune, but I never could set it up or add music to it. I have an Android phone and I like it, but it would help if it was a lot easier to use. We are considering switching to iPhones when our current contract runs out early next year.

Great topic! Christmas approaches and I'm at a loss as to what to get my kids who are both away at college. They both have Kindles, laptops, netbooks, iphones. I was thinking if Apple comes out with a mini iPad I would get them each one of those because I love my iPad so well. The Kindle Fire HD looks nice, too, and they would be able to access my Prime account. I love the apple interface. Droid doesn't seem intuitive to me. Decisions, decisions.
