SSR is an on-site resort, boatboatboat, and for you to keep referring to it as an off-site resort tells me one of two things about you...you are ignorant about the details of DVC or you are intentionally trying to be insulting to the owners of SSR. Frankly, I hope it's ignorance on your part, because intentional rudeness is abhorrent.
SSR appears to be a lovely resort, and one that I am sure we will stay in one day. It's location doesn't bother me a bit...I have no problem busing, boating or driving to where I need to be. I know some folks like to be on the monorail, and that is certainly a matter of personal preference. If they ever build a DVC resort on the monorail, I am sure it will be quite popular. I know some folks like to be within walking distance to Epcot/MGM...that is certainly a plus for the BWV/BCV resorts, but not a deal-breaker for me.
All the DVC have plusses and minuses. And I am certainly not afraid to point out the minuses in an effort to possibly improve the system, the resort or its service. However, I think I am realistic about what I have here...it's a timeshare, it's better than the average timeshare, but it's a timeshare nonetheless. I expect that the units will show some wear and tear on occasion, and I report the same to the people who can fix it. I expect that a CM may be less than magical on occasion because they are human, so I pretty much let it slide, unless it is an extreme situation.
As far as SSR's impact on the DVC product itself...we go through this every time a new resort is built. There's the "oh my God, we aren't going to be able to get a room at XYZ because all the 'new' people will want to stay there". That may be partially true at first...I know DH & I stayed at all the new resorts as they came on board, to try them out...we owned early on, when only OKW & BWV were available, so as each new resort was built, we'd stay there to see what it was like. The bottom line is though that SSR owners have the same rights as every other DVC owner to stay where they want. I am quite sure there are people who have bought OKW resales for a reasonable price who have no intention of ever staying at OKW. SSR's location is not desirable to some. Well, guess what? At any given time, the location of any one of the resorts may not be desirable. I like staying in the Boardwalk area sometimes. And sometimes I prefer the peace and quiet of OKW or the serenity of VWL. Maybe for one trip I might be interested in being closer to DTD to try several of their restaurants, to go to the Adventurers Club every night and be able to get "home" quickly, to have a more "adult activities" oriented trip, so I'll go to SSR. Maybe one trip I want to be close to Epcot because of the F&W Festival, so I want to stay at the BCV or BWV. Maybe one trip is going to be a golfing vacation, so I want to be at OKW. Maybe one trip I feel the need for a slower pace and some serenity, so I decide to go to VWL and lounge by the pool or on their beach, walk the wooded trails, sit by the cozy lobby fire. My point is that there is no one resort that appeals to everybody all the time, so let's just relax and let things settle down, and I think it'll be fine.
