Why no microwaves?

Is it just because they are harder to keep clean than fridges? Fire hazards? Energy use? I'm curious.

It's been on my mind since I started planning this trip with a young child. I can live without, but lots of hotels have them now and it sure would be convenient.

There are probably a few reasons, some of which you mentioned, also theft (yes it happens even at Disney).....and even though most hotel chains give microwaves in their rooms now, how many of those chains are also trying to sell you food via restaurants, quick service and snack options. If it was really convenient for you to make even just breakfast and lunch in your room you are less likely to spend money in the food courts, restaurants, etc.

At some of the deluxe hotels you can request a microwave sent to your room. We asked for and received them at both the beach club and the grand floridian.

I agree I wish a microwave was an option in the rooms. Many times I do not finish my dinner and I would like the ability to take my food to the room and finish later.

Me too. I tried eating some left over :crazy2: :crazy2: cold pasta during our last stay. Yuck!

How about why no fridges (at the values) included in room price? :confused3
I don't know how long it's been since I stayed anywhere without a mini-fridge. I'd think Disney could at least include these. Maybe they are afraid of excessive abuse by the teenage groups?

BTW, we were going to join a swap (the last I heard the swap fridge was lost). We can take a cooler, and I have a tiny "mini fridge warmer" we'll probably take along so we aren't desperate enough to really need one and pay the 10 bucks.

I just don't get why they aren't standard. I'll go ask Walt when we get there or throw a coin in a well for them to add fridges for me and microwaves for you. ;)

All the Resorts have a microwave in their counter service locations you can use at anytime for whatever you want. So even though they won't be in the rooms at least you can still have access to one.

I tend to not criticize Disney for the lack of microwaves and in value rooms, the lack of refrigerators because I've stayed at other much more expensive places and still had to pay up to $25 PER NIGHT for the pleasure of parking my car in a lot that is shared with anyone else who wants to pay to use that lot. And then I've had to use cabs or buses or subways or other public and pay transportation to get to where I'm going. Or had to rent a car or pay for transportation to and from the airport to my hotel. I've also been stuck in my room doing nothing but watching mindless TV instead of having tons of other entertainment right at my fingertips.

So I don't get a microwave. I get free transportation and parking whether I'm driving or flying. I'll take that any day over a microwave.

Has anyone ever requested a microwave at the Polynesian? This would solve a lot of problems for me.

Both very good points. I hadn't thought about the second part. If they've got me going over to the hotel counter service to use a microwave, maybe I'll also be spending some money there.

Good call! I am requesting a room as close as possible for this reason. DD is happy to have some instant oatmeal for breakfast every morning, so it'll save us some $$ to pack the packets and use the microwave. I'm just feeling sorry for myself that I have to leave my room to do it. But, it's Disney. So, I can live with it.

I wouldn't be surprised to see microwaves in the rooms, eventually. Especially at the deluxes and at CSR. Disney always seems to resist these kind of room improvements until it becomes absolutely clear that they have to make the improvement in order to stay competitive.

For the oatmeal, you can just use the coffeemaker in the room to boil hot water, and then pour it over the oatmeal and mix it. You don't even need a microwave!

I didn't know that was an option. What was the fee for this?

Thanx

Missippianna, It appears you will be staying at CBR. There will be a coffee pot in your room and you can heat water for instant oatmeal. I do this at work add hot water and stir and let sit until ready to eat. You will also have a mini frig for milk etc.
Either wau have a great trip.:goodvibes

Vacation club resorts offer them. I know I have used one in those rooms. I think it just depends on the room type.

All DVC rooms have a microwave, toaster, fridge (dorm size in studios, full size in 1 bedroom and larger), coffee maker.
