So I'm a little late for Christmas movie threads - sue me.;)

Years of watching "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer", and I STILL haven't figured out why the doll is a misfit.

Why is she?

Bawhahaha! We were trying to figure that out last week! The 2 things we came up we with were-

-She's missing a nose

- Or maybe her name is Larry....... ;)

The Number one question that we get asked about the special is: What is wrong with the MISFIT GIRL DOLL? Arthur Rankin answers this question on page five of my book. Apparently, her problem was more psychological than physical. I have recently obtained THE original 10-28-63 draft of the script by Romeo Muller and the MISFIT GIRL DOLL does not appear in this first draft.

This was taken from a site of behind the scenes. Even at Rankinbass.com, it links you to this answer. :(

I guess I have to buy the book if I really want to know.

Imagine that, we have to figure out that she's psychologically damaged. Dolly depression?

Well, if that's the case, I think a few of my DD's dolls might qualify as misfits because they sure have had to suffer some psycological (not to mention physical) damage from her playing with them. There's no telling what years of isolation in a toy box can do to a doll!

I've always wanted a Charlie in the Box. I've only seen one and it comes in the huge Rudolph set that costs nearly $50, but all I want is the Charlie!!!

And, yes, every time we see Rudolph we always wonder what on Earth is wrong with the doll. I think there was another toy that was on there too that I couldn't figure out what its problem was. I can't think of it right now though.

I think because the person she was given to prior did not want her. Remember "King Moonraiser" said the island was for toys that were "unwanted" as well.

Not that we have thought about that here at my house...

:o :o :o

Which brings me to my next question - why is a flying lion the king of an island with misfit toys???

And why does that poor spotted elephant have to do his bidding and be the footman???

for years it has bugged me..could figure out what was wrong with all of the other toys on Misfit Isle..except for that doll..at first I thought the nose thing also..but a lot of dolls that have 'stuffed faces' don't have them..so I just set the thought aside..the other day I took my stepdaughter for her ob gyn appt..and they had rudolph stick ums in the window..and I said..'what's wrong with the doll' ...and noone knew!
I find it difficult to believe that they would expect children to think that the doll had 'psychological problems'..especially since the show was made so long ago!
anyone who finds out the real reason...let us know..so enquiring minds can stop enquiring..lol!

Too funny! My family was just discussing this last week! We've never been able to figure it out.

I have to go back and watch DD's dvd but doesn't she cry colored tears that look like strawberry jam? That is what I always thought but maybe it was just my tv! :o :p

I'm almost positive it is because she wasn't wanted.

Personally, I would like the spotted elephant.

Taken from www.misfittoys.net:

The tag on the CVS bean bag toy of the little Dolly reads: "I'm a little rag doll who just wants a friend. I think that will help my broken heart mend." This seems to be the ever-burning question for Misfit philosophers of all time. Rick Goldschmidt in his book "The Enchanted World of Rankin Bass" writes: In the original broadcast the Dolly's screen time is mere seconds. I don't believe Romeo Muller really gave the character much thought. She was granted more screen time in the 1965 and 1997 broadcasts which ultimately led many a fan to wonder what was wrong with her. Arthur Rankin says that Dolly's problem is more psychological. As it is never mentioned in the script why in particular the doll is a misfit, some offer this: Charlie-in-the-Box tells Rudolph, Hermey and Yukon when they arrive on the Island of Misfit Toys that King Moonracer flies over the earth each night and brings unloved toys to the Island of Misfits. Dolly is perhaps there because she feels she is unloved (as King Moonracer explains about misfits) and perhaps the little girl who onced played with her is now grown up and Dolly now sits in a box, unwanted, waiting to be loved by another little girl again. "In certain circles," this explanation is offered and widely accepted by Misfit Philosophers.

This question has bothered me for 30 years!!!

I know, I should really get a life!!

The nose thing was all that my sister and I could ever come up with.

She's an ex con who had a torrid affair with a Jack in the Box. The Charlie in the box was the result of this shameless affair.

Hope this helped.
